Hello
Since the last update (4.7), the vertical oscillation metric and the ground contact time do not show up on Healthfit (nor apple workout).
Before this version 4.7, everything was ok. (I was on the public beta of watch os 9)
Is it a new limitation of apple not to take this information?
I checked the app settings, and everything should be ok.
Am I the only one with this problem?

thanks
Please check that you have enabled these permissions in Apple's Settings app. Go to Privacy then Health then WorkOutDoors and make sure that every switch is enabled. You will need to scroll down to see them all.

Is it possible to navigate to a spot on the map using WorkOutDoors?
Not at the moment. I plan to improve the navigation features in the future but offline navigation on the watch is unlikely in the short term. Sorry about that.

You may be experiencing a rare bug with iOS/watchOS where the watch seems to lose a permission. To fix this switch that permission off, then reboot both the iPhone and the watch, and then switch it on again. This procedure nudges iOS into sending the permission to the watch.

Question for you...

Would it be possible to include a setting so that when you start an activity in WOD the brightness on the watch is changed to a different level?

I'm thinking of how when I open an airline app, or apple wallet and select a boarding pass the brightness automatically goes to full and then back down once that boarding pass is taken off the screen.

I like my watch brightness on low most times as I use giant numerals for the clock. But when doing activity I need the brightness on full in order to read it clearly while moving.

So I always have to go into setting to adjust before/after activity.

Would that be possible?

PS. I have changed my layout for less fields and bigger numbers - but in the forest, moving the brightness really helps.

thx

I don't think apps have any control over the brightness of the screen. Some apps may seem brighter when showing a brighter image (especially if it is predominantly white) but as far as I know they cannot control the brightness. Only the user and the OS can control that.

One suggestion for the “Bottom line” is an option to display the current heart rate (bpm) instead of the zone number. For “Heart zone”.

I use shortcuts and automations to do it when I launch certains app

Follow this method :
one for the openning

The other one for the closing

An excellent idea. Sorry, I should have suggested that.

It looks like I will need to get into coding in that area just to implement the Action Button on the Ultra. As far as I can see Apple still haven't released any official documentation on how to do it though.

I used WorkOutDoors for a hike today, and used the new Apple compass app with backtrack, at the same time. I had no issue with using both, and displaying whichever one I wanted displayed. Not sure if this is what you are asking. WorkOutDoors already shows breadcrumbs and direction back to start.
A little watchOS tip (that you may already know) is you can double tap the crown to swap between the last two used apps. So you can easily swap between the compass and WOD without even touching the screen.

Is it possible to turn low power mode on for certain workout types only? I’d like save some power when I’m hiking but want all the data when I’m running! Following on from the Shortcuts suggestion I checked that out and it looks like the action for setting lower power mode isn’t available on the watch yet 😕

Again, I don't think apps have any control over this, and if it isn't possible by shortcuts either then you may have to do it manually each time.

But you’re working on turn by turn for a gpx
route?

Yes, I plan to improve the navigation with route following, and turn by turn directions if they are contained in a GPX route.

After that I may look into creating turn by turn directions using an online service. However that would cost money every time it is used so I would probably have to make it an additional purchase in some way. I want to avoid this which is why it is only a possibility.

Offline routing is something that I haven’t really investigated yet, which is why I say that it is unlikely for a while. It was very rarely requested until the last week when Garmin users started considering the app as a result of the Ultra.

This shows the different requirements of Ultra owners from other owners, which I need to bear in mind when deciding what features to add in the future.

Have you checked out Komoot for Turn-by-Turn?

It is for free for developers.

Route following with the possibility of showing an elevation graph of the route would be awesome.
Perhaps the elevation graph can be shown as two datafields side by side at one of the information datascreens within the watch. So it would be easier to see where you are on the uploaded remaining route.

I plan to support the turn by turn directions contained in GPX files generated by Komoot. So if you load a GPX file created by them and containing directions, then the app will use those directions.

As far as I know they don't offer a free service for apps to request turn by turn directions between any 2 points, or the ability to generate directions for a GPX route which doesn't have them, which is what I would want in the longer term.

An elevation graph of the route, and metrics for remaining distance, time, ascent etc will be included when I improve the navigation to follow the route.

I see in these Screenshot that they offer this service for free.

I think that would only work for Komoot customers. I would want a service that didn't require the user to be a Komoot member.

However I will bear it in mind as a compromise solution that wouldn't require any change to the WOD business model.

Thanks for your reply! Hopefully Apple add it in soon.

As a follow up, should the Workout automation triggers work with WOD? I tried setting up an automation to turn off the always on display to get part of the way to what I want. This works with the built-in app but doesn’t appear to work with WOD.

If that isn’t possible could you look at adding Shortcuts support? Being able to start a particular workout type would be great 😀

The app doesn’t yet support shortcuts. It is a bit of a moving target because Apple keep changing how they work.

In fact the latest change in the shortcuts area is something they call App Intents and it seems like that system may be necessary for the app to handle the action button on the Ultra. So I may be forced into adding some sort of support for shortcuts just to handle the button.

I don’t know for sure yet because they haven’t published any official documentation, and I am just going by informal stuff on Twitter and blogs. Hopefully they will publish something soon.

One issue is that App Intents is only easily available to apps written in Swift and not those like WOD, which is written in Objective C. I am hoping this won’t be a major issue (like their always on display restrictions) but it will slow me down.

I know you are working on a full routing solution with many features that many including myself are eagerly waiting for.

But till this is finished could you just take the total distance from the selected route (that the app anyway already knows) and use it for some metrics that need that information to work? (remaining time/distance)

That would assume that the user started at the start of the route, which isn't always the case.

I could maybe get around that by checking they are near the start when they start the workout. However I would then need to handle the case where they had to deviate around something. A trail that was blocked or closed maybe. That would also confuse a simple implementation.

The main problem with solutions that work most of the time is that I would get justifiable complaints when people use them in the situations when they don't work. If people started 5 miles before the start of the route and the app was showing 1 mile to go when there are actually 6 miles to go then they won't be happy (and it could even be dangerous).

Sorry about that. I will implement it properly sometime. It is top priority when I have finished with watchOS 9 and the Ultra. It was previously joint top with the always on display, but the Ultra seems to have caused navigational improvements to be much more requested recently.
