Thanks for the new beta. Having access to the action button is great. I’m currently testing now and would note that the pause function just isn’t working for me (action + side button). It may be me but just can’t get that combo to work

The new beta looks better too on the ultra - thanks and glad to hear the ultra is boosting interest and sales

You can choose all the option you haved before in the settings like one tap, double tap, swep etc…. Personally I choosed the fonction new interval when pressed.
Where can you access the beta version? Is there a way to join?

Hi Ian, thanks for the beta I ve tested today during my long workout. All is fine for me. Action button works well and it is very useful. One thing, I prefer the elapsed time without the « … » which remplace seconds. For an half marathon for exemple, it is important to know near the arrival of you are at the beginning of the minute or a the end ! ( psychologicaly). Is there a way to create an option to chose ?
Thanks a lot again for your work 😉
Where are you seeing the "..."? That should not happen. Please could you send a screenshot to info@workoutdoors.net and I will take a look.

You are correct: the app doesn’t pause if you press both buttons. Instead it does exactly the same as if you only pressed the Action Button.

I asked the main Apple engineer about this in a tweet a couple of days ago, so hopefully I will find out how to differentiate between a single and double button press.

It would also be useful if Apple published some documentation on how apps can use the action button. I had to cobble this together from unofficial blogs and tweets, none of which mentioned using both buttons. The Ultra has been out for a month, and supporting the Action button is unexpectedly complicated, so proper documentation would be very useful.

What is Health for a source for pace?

What is Health for a source for pace?
The app allows you to choose which of 3 watchOS systems supplies the current pace: the Pedometer system (which is the default); the GPS system (which is the worst option for pace); and the Health system.

In watchOS 9 there is a new "Running Pace" metric, which is what the app uses if you choose the Health system option.
If this seems to give a better current pace than the pedometer then I may make it the default in the future, but at the moment most people seem happy with the pace from the pedometer.

When I am using Stryd and I‘ve set to use pace/distance from the watch instead of the Stryd then „actual pace“ and pedometer doesn’t give me any values. Is that expected?

I‘ve tested already the action button. It works great. I can do laps with pressing both buttons on the right side. Pressing the action button will pause/resume the workout.

Question: When I am starting the screen the app is waiting for sensors and I have my start button there on the screen. Shouldn’t it be possible in that state to use the action button?

Please check that you have given the app permission to use the pedometer. To do this go to the Settings app on the iPhone and tap Privacy and then Motion & Fitness, then make sure Fitness Tracking is enabled and so is WorkOutDoors. Then go to the Watch app on the iPhone and select Privacy and ensure that Fitness Tracking is enabled there.

Is there a description about the “Health System“. I don‘t know it.
The Health system is part of watchOS and iOS that stores all the health information, including workouts.

I wouldn't worry about it. Just know that the Health option for Current Pace is another available source which you may find works better for you that the pedometer.

I haven't looked into using the button for precision start yet. It has been hard enough guessing how to make it work generally, and part of the problem is that Apple do not allow third party apps to get a lock on the heart rate before starting a workout.

If Apple do provide proper documentation on how developers can use the Ultra button (which is looking increasingly unlikely) then I will try to include precision start in the next version, but otherwise I may just release a version with the action button functionality as it is in the current beta.

No worries. It’s already great to be able to start/ stop and do laps without the screen 😊

What the hack. It was turned off. I cannot remember I did this intentionally. Many thanks 😊

Hello, a few more questions

1) I set an alert for every mile which vibrates. My WOD setting is all in metric as I want to see KMs. However, when I am running, I also want to vibrate every mile, with a visual alert pop that says "Mile 10" or whatever mile it is (but still have the screens show KMs). This is how I have set it on my Garmin previously. I can get the vibrate every mile alert working but not the visual alert - Is this possible on WOD?

2) Is there a way to make the vibrate alert stronger or longer?

Thanks

Hi. Pressing the action button after a run starts triggers intervals, how are you getting it to pause/restart?

Cheers

You can configure the distance alert in terms of miles, even if your have km set as the distance units.

The strength of the vibration is controlled by watchOS unfortunately. I may allow the vibration type to be configurable in the future, but it isn't high in my priorities. Sorry.

I have the same experience. Pushing action button in a workout just marks an interval.
You can change what the action button does during a workout by using the Shortcuts screen in the Commands settings.

@cfc - I assume you have already seen this but this looks to be a handy write-up for implementing the action button behaviour with references to Apple doco and sample code:-

https://crunchybagel.com/adding-support-for-apple-watch-ultra-action-button/
Yes, that was the unofficial blog and sample code that I used most. They were really useful and much appreciated but didn't go into detail about aspects such as using both buttons at the same time, or the need to "donate" an intent if a user doesn't start a workout with the button.

These are the things that Apple should really have official documentation for. The links to Apple docs in that blog are just to user interface guidelines and some self-confessed "preliminary" code documentation that doesn't explain much at all.

When digging into elevation data issues I found out, that the elevation graph from a direct export from WorkOutDoors looks different compared to an export from Apple Health.

For me it looks like WorkOutDoors is applying some smoothing for the elevation data where Apple Health is not.

That surprised me. I assumed that the elevation graph would look identical no matter if exported from WorkOutDoors or Apple Health.
Can you confirm that this is really what happens?

Please see attached screen shot where the same workout is imported into Garmin. One is directly from WorkoutDoors and the second one out of Apple Health using HealthFit.

Background is, that some apps where I import the workout data have issues with the "jagged" elevation data exported from Apple Health.

Btw. I’m using the Altimeter Data. Will give the GPS option a try and see if that makes a difference to the elevation data stored in apple health.
