WOD uses the standard system font, which is "SF Compact" on that link. I may make it configurable in the future but that isn't high in my plans at the moment. Sorry about that.
Really?

It looks different than the font used in the Apple’s workout app. Less rounded 🤔

Maybe Apple's app doesn't use the standard system font. I don't know. All I can say is that WOD uses the system font.

Maybe WOD uses SF Compact, while Apple Workout uses SF Compact Rounded?

I don’t know if they are two different fonts or just different styles of the same font, though.

I installed the app this morning and I already love it. I used it for dinghy sailing. It shows and records all the information I wanted. Thank you!

Maybe a long shot, but the only additional thing that would be great to have is if Heartrate Zones data could be passed to Fitness. When on iOS I go to Fitness > Sailing > Heart Rate > Show More I can see lots of great details about each zone, but not when the workout was recorded with WorkOutDoors. I know I can see them in the WorkOutDoors app, but I would love to have them in Health/Fitness too, so that third party apps (like Vitality in my case) can read them.

Anyway, great app, thanks again.

Unfortunately Apple's Fitness app does not show the heart rate zones for workouts created by third party apps like WOD. Sorry about that, but glad you like the app!

Will it change with new WatchOS / iOS17 release?

I don't think so. Apple added their heart zones last year, but many apps such as WOD have had their own zones for many years. So I think that it was a deliberate decision by Apple not to show their zones for workouts created by such apps, because then there would be two different sets of zones for the same workout.

If they allow third party apps to access their heart zones in the future then maybe Apple will then show zones for workouts created by apps that use their zones, but at the moment it seems a sensible decision not to show them.

Importing of interval schedules is on my to-do list, currently behind the always on display and turn-by-turn in terms of big features. Unfortunately they may take a while. I also plan to add the new power and running dynamics in watchOS 9 when that is released.

Glad you like the app!
Been trying out TrainAsOne with different AW apps and WOD workouts autosync well using HealthFit. Some of the TrainAsOne workouts are quite complex though and would really benefit from having realtime instructions in WOD, ie. autosync in the other direction also. Any thoughts on that now?

Importing schedules from FIT files is on my to-do list. I have coded it up to work with the app's current interval schedules, but they don’t yet support nested repeat loops. I asked around on these forums a few months back and most people said there would be complaints if I released it without supporting nested repeats.

So I decided to hold fire because nested loops would take a while to implement and there are higher priorities at the moment.

However watchOS also does not allow nested loops in structured workouts, but watchOS 10 will allow other systems to send it workouts (without nested loops). So I am reconsidering whether to allow FIT import without nested loops, and maybe also add the ability to export to watchOS 10.

I plan to release a new version of WOD before watchOS 10 (with the always on display) and then another version afterwards which supports some of the new watchOS 10 features. There is an outside chance that I may include the FIT import in that later version but it depends on how things go.

How is WorkOutDoors running on watch os10? Other apps have issues with external heart rate monitors (the internal one doesn’t disable leading to heart rate data being pulled from both at once) and notifications aren’t audible through headphones.

Personally I don't see a problem with intervals without nested loops, software is gradually improved all the time anyway. All workouts I see at the moment in TAO are either multi-step or of type warmup + easy + 8x(run fast at pace/hr + run easy at pace/hr) + cooldown. Or similar. Could be done with current WOD intervals. Garmin fit file workouts can be manually downloaded or synced directly to the Garmin calendar, something similar would need to be setup for WOD, I suppose, either directly or using a syncing service like HealthFit. I say, if you have it done, release it 🙂

There are a few issues running the release version of WOD on the watchOS 10 beta. I have worked around these in the latest beta so hopefully it will be fine when that is released to the App Store next month.

I haven't heard of any external HR issues or volume issues when using watchOS 10 but it could just be because no-one has mentioned them yet.

The external HR issues seem to be a watch os10 beta issue as it’s happening on the native exercise app as well. I’ve filed it as a bug report. The headphone issue will only become apparent if WorkOutDoors uses notifications. On the Stryd app for example, it uses notifications for tones for being above or below target power. They don’t come through the headphones but sound via the watch if I disconnect the headphones. Speech etc comes through ok.

That would be an amazing feature, would love it. Checked the WorkoutKit API and it looks good and easy to use.

Still thinking about doing a small app only for interval creation (including nested repeats) and syncing to watchOS 10 though but would toss that if WOD does it too. UI is the biggest part and not necessary as WOD already has it.

If I do add it soon then it won't include nested repeats at first. I am only considering it because I have already coded the FIT import without nesting, and because I will be looking into implementing the new watchOS 10 features in a "quick" version after it is released.

There is only an outside chance of adding it anyway. It is at the top of my "if I have time" features that I may sneak into the watchOS 10 version of WOD, but time is usually at a premium when the new devices and watchOS are released. My main focus of that version will be supporting the new cycling sensor metrics.

This will involve saving the power/cadence etc values read from the app's existing Bluetooth sensor functionality into the workouts saved by the app in Apple's Health system. I may also allow those metrics to be read from watchOS, so that you can choose whether to pair a sensor with the app or with watchOS (as is currently possible with external HR sensors).

So only if there is time will I look into FIT import and the ability to save imported / created schedules to watchOS 10. Apple often spring some surprises with the hardware releases so I will play things by ear. Also there may be some fixes required for the always on display version. It is a major rewrite so there may be issues that are spotted after releasing it to the App Store that will need fixing in the following release for watchOS 10.

Hi @cfc, thanks for this great app; have been using it for several years now and don't plan to go back to e.g. Garmin.

I do have one question:
One is about the 3-2-1 countdown timer to start a workout. When doing normal runs or intervals, I like to use this timer to start my workout. But obviously, when I'm doing a race, I don't want this countdown timer; what I've noticed however, is that even when I have disabled it, my workout (race) will still start with a countdown. Typically, WOD will only activate the change after one or a few workouts. I haven't found a pattern however; so no idea why this doesn't work on my watch. Did anyone else already report this bug?

With the new WOD beta and AOD the AW Ultra (WatchOS 9.6) now finally feels like a sports watch. I use the following settings for starting/stopping:

Watch app / Action button
- Action: Workout
- App: WorkOutDoors
- First Press: Run
WorkOutDoors app / Settings / Commands / Shortcut Gestures
- Crown + Side Button: Pause/Resume
- Action Button: End Workout
- Action + Side Button: New Interval
WorkOutDoors app / Settings / Screen
- Running Settings: Use Always on Display ON
WorkOutDoors app / Settings / Start Options
- Running Settings: Precision Start ON
- Running Settings: Precision Start via Action Button ON
- Running Settings: Precision Start if using Sensors ON
- Running Settings: Sensor Auto-Start OFF

1st press of Action: Start screen for a run with status fields for GPS and HRM and a switch for Countdown (off by default)
2nd press of Action: Start run
3rd press of Action: End run and show summary (with a possibility to Discard Workout)

If possible, I would definitely like the summary screen to stay active until I press Done or Discard. As it is now, if I lower my arm after ending a run, I'm back on the regular watch screen and have to start WOD from the app menu again to get back to the summary screen and tell it I'm Done. Happens all the time.

AOD is sport specific and there is a separate brightness slider for each, which is very nice! I would appreciate a number for the brightness also, so that I can set it to the exact same value for different sports.

Otherwise, good work!

When the start button is displayed there is a switch at the bottom of the screen that allows you to over-ride the countdown setting. This is for races because people often use the start screen in a race and they often don't want a countdown if they are controlling exactly when it starts. The other option in the settings is for when the start screen is not displayed.

Thanks for the feedback. It's great to hear that it feels more like a sports watch with everything that can now be done with buttons alone.

Unfortunately the app can't control what watchOS displays when the arm is lowered and raised. When a workout is active watchOS is more likely to keep the app on the screen, but when the summary screen is shown then the workout has finished and the app has less priority. Usually watchOS will maintain the app on the screen but other things are more likely to over-ride it.

In terms of the brightness values I don't tend to show percentages in the settings screens on the iPhone app. However the sliders in the watch app settings have 10 discrete bars so it is much easier to exactly control the values exactly.

Thanks for testing the app!
