What is "estimated distance" compared to "distance" and when would it typically need to be used?

Estimated distance = "The total distance for the workout (estimated if necessary)"

If you have specified a fixed time when starting a workout then it uses the average speed so far to estimate the total distance for the workout if you kept up that speed for the specified time.

Hi @cfc , first of all congrats on the app, this was my first paid app and it was the money best spent ever.

Now that watchos11 and ios18 betas are polished and the final os are coming out next week, do you have an idea on when the next Workoutdoors beta will be released? Also, will it contains some of the navigation features? The hype is real! Thank you!

I plan to release a beta very soon, which will support the new series 10 watches. However Apple don't seem to have made them available in the simulator they provide, so I can't yet code for them. I have asked on Apple's forums if I am missing something, so hopefully someone can help.

There won't be any navigation features in this beta because it is just about supporting the new watches. However I did test the turn by turn whilst on a cycling vacation last week and it worked well, so the navigation functionality is heading in the right direction (so to speak).

With you watchOS 11 release are you adding double-tap to switch between screens? That would be huge for cyclists!
Unfortunately Apple haven't made the double tap gesture easily available to developers. An app can associate it with an on-screen button but as far as I know an app cannot just detect the gesture and decide what to do with it.

So there may be a way to implement it by using some sort of hidden button, but I haven't investigated yet. My plan (as it often is at this time of year) is to let other people investigate and then implement it if it is possible.

Is there a way to change the naming template of workouts? I have some vague memory of this being a feature but I can’t find it so it may be an imaginary feature.

Naming workouts YYYY-MM-DD HH:SS would make more sense when I export GPX files.

Sorry, that is not possible. It has been on my to-do list for many years but is rarely requested.

No problem, it’s not that much work to rename the files after export.

Love the app! I use it at least once a day and often twice a day and it’s never given me any issues in the 6 years I’ve been using it daily. It makes the Apple Watch so much better 👍🏻

How do I access the beta for the next version?
Thanks for offering to test the app. There isn't a beta at the moment but there will be one in the next few days which will support the new series 10 watches.

If you email me at info@workoutdoors.net then I will add you to the beta programme when a beta is ready.

Talking about cycling - any news on the feature of mirroring WOD to the phone mounted on the bikes handlebar.

Sorry, that is further down my list of priorities.

I will eventually add it though, especially because I would probably make the app work independently on the iPhone, which would open up a whole new market of iPhone users who don't have Apple Watches. It would be at the top of the list if I prioritised features according to what would increase sales rather than what is most requested. But that's not the way I work.

I bought this app today after hearing about it earlier this week. It's awesome! I can't believe you can get an app like this so cheap and without monthly fees.

I currently use an Apple Watch Series 4, but I have a Series 10 on order (I am upsizing 40mm to 46mm, bigger display will be perfect for app like this!). Is there any estimate on when the app will be updated to support the new watches?

I am hoping to get a new version on the App Store by the time the new watches are released on Friday. I have coded up support for the new screen sizes and released a beta yesterday. I realise that no-one will be able to test it on the S10 watches but in theory the beta testing will help spot if I have broken anything else whilst supporting the new watches.

In an ideal world the testing will go well and then I will submit it to Apple for review and they will accept it before Friday. However it's a very tight timescale (as always at this time of year) and Apple's reviewers will be very busy, so I can't guarantee it will released by Friday.

Also I have only been able to test the S10 watches using Apple's simulator, and sometimes there are issues that only show up on a real device, so even if the new version is available on Friday there is no guarantee that it will work perfectly on the new watches. But it should work a lot better than the current version.

Glad you like the app!

Hello,

I just downloaded Watch OS 11 RC. I can’t confirm, does Apple support automatic training load calculations from WorkOutDoors? Some posts I have read in other places indicate that after a certain number of workouts it will eventually auto generate a training load for workoutdoor workouts. I’m also going to be doing some new workouts this week to test this myself so I’ll report back if this is actually true or not. Thanks.

I don't know if it auto-generates training load, so any feedback on this would be useful.

Hi, I discovered WOD today and it's really nice! :)

I'm missing following features though, since I manage my files fully locally:
1. Bulk export workouts (Selecting them one by one is complicated)
2. Bulk import workouts (counterpart to export workouts, it would be great to import workouts back to the app)
3. Shortcut support for export/import functions. For example copying exported GPX files via shortcuts to a network storage via network protocols? Would be awesome (Might be complicated, but 1. and 2. already would be so nice to have)

Probably something for the future?
Really excited about future of WOD, it might be the reason I stick with my Apple Watch!

Thank you cfc!

I would understand if the question is too personal and you don't want to answer, however may I ask if you have ever considered working with other developers ?

If done properly, that could unlock a virtuous circle of more user satisfaction thanks to even greater features like this one (indeed, people that are new into eg. running often begin with their iPhone rather than a watch) and more time for you to focus on what really matters to your eyes.

PS. I am surprised that Apple have not acquired your awesome application yet. Or maybe they tried already but you prefer to work by yourself :)

Thank you very much

Glad you like the app. To answer your questions:

1) I don’t plan on adding bulk exports in the near future but you can use a third party app such as HealthFit to bulk export from the workouts in Apple’s Health system (including those saved by WorkOutDoors): https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/healthfit/id1202650514?mt=8

2) The app is only intended for creating workouts and for analysing workouts created by it. If I allowed analysis of workouts created by other apps then any problems with those apps would mean that I would need to investigate their bugs, which I do not want to do.

3) I may add shortcut support in the future but it is rarely requested so it is unlikely anytime soon. Sorry about that.

Thanks for your quick reply!
Your points on 2) and 3) are fully understandable.

Still I would really hope that you can be convinced on 1) the bulk export.
I tested most apps in appstore which offer local export functionality to GPX / CSV format and heart rate data is lost every time. After talking with multiple devs, this seem to be an issue with Apple Health files exported to GPX format.
Even the official Export function in Apple Health App removes heart rate data, this is also the case when files are exported via HealthFit.

This is not the case with OWD, exported files via OWD include heart rate data.
Probably because a file export from OWD skips Apple Health and creates it's own file.

For now I will continue using OWD and export each file seperately to GPX format.
It's demanding, but the only way to generate GPX exports without missing heart rate data.
My use case is to export all workout files and import them locally to https://github.com/jovandeginste/workout-tracker which I host myself. This way my fitness data is never shared online with third parties.
OWD is a great help here and I only can hope it makes things more easy in future with a bulk export :)

I do prefer to work by myself. I have been coding for a (very) long time, and love the freedom that it gives me.

The app is very un-Apple so I doubt they would be interested. Their apps are slick and intuitive whereas WOD is more about functionality and (possibly too much) configurability. Also I doubt that many people at Apple are even aware of the app! 😀
