Apple are milking some specific industries (like airliners) with iPad mini 4. I think it would be time to let it go, and introduce iPad Pro 8 (as 8.2") with even higher price. FaceID wouldn't be very useful for pilots, so that feature is not in rushed in.

iPad Pro 8 @ WWDC 2018:
- 8.2" OLED ProMotion
- A11 with 3GB ram
- Pencil support
- TouchID 2
- Same camera from iPhone 8
- IP 67

No other updates for iPad Pro lineup this time. The rest will get their updates in fall.

That is pretty much the only thing I’d buy this year, yes please.

Jk mini is dead as far as Apple is concerned :(

As for leaks - we don’t necessarily need leaks when there is the eec filings. We knew about the 2018 iPad 6 weeks before it was announced. We knew about 2017 iPP this time last year before WWDC.

All we have at the moment I believe is 11 iphone models - hinted at being the SE? It’s unlikely these are tablets, as based from the 2018 iPad filing, the ‘tablet running iOS 11’ message is missing.

Apple has been milking Mac mini buyers with a 2014 machine less capable than 2012. They’ll keep milking we will keep posting. Don’t count on them doing the right logical thing here.

Apple just sent out a marketing blasts for the current iPads and iPad Pros, making a new iPad Pro in six days unlikely.
Not sure that means anything. Apple sadly has become greedy. I can absolutely see a scenario where there is an announcement at WWDC with shipping in September. The email blast is to clear old stocks. Most normal people don’t follow MR and news sites like us.

As can be seen on the front page we are getting info on both 2018 and 2019 iPhones but nothing on the iPad. I am calling it. No iPads at WWDC. Maybe September or next March.

I would be totally fine with there not being a new one announced fheb4th as I just got a 10.5 (tax free) however if there is one announced I have 45 days to return so I could return, the only thing I ask is please keep it the same size/shape, so m keyboard will work and all I ha e to get is a new screen protector....

I love the face that notification are hidden on the main screen unless I look at it.

FYI if you mean that notification details are hidden on lock screen until the phone is unlocked, you can do that with Touch ID too. It’s just a setting.

Being afraid of small bezels is like not adopting electric cars out of fear that there won’t be enough charging stations.

My point being that if Apple are smart enough to make a tablet with thin or no bezels, they can certainly make a flawless edge-touch rejection system. The benefits of a lighter, smaller device far outweigh the problem of fingers on the edges of the screen. it is up to the designers to implement the technology to make it work well.

Right now I’m looking at a beautiful 12.9” tablet screen that is framed by nearly 30% additional bezel area around it... fail. Yes, please release a new iPad Pro at WWDC! And it better have smaller bezels. Home button, meh. FaceID, whatever. THE BEZELS!

It’s not quite the same. With electric charging stations, there’s an inevitable clear path: simply make more charging stations. With bezelless tablets, there are several problematic questions. Is it really that simple to make accidental touch rejection completely flawless? If so, why hasn’t it been done yet? (I imagine this can only be answered by people with intimate knowledge about the technology.) And it does need to be absolutely flawless, otherwise there will always be that mental stress of hoping you don’t accidentally trigger something disastrous. And how will the software know if a thumb is simply holding the edge of the screen or long pressing on a button that is located on the edge of the screen? Would it require that all UIs can no longer have buttons on the edge of the screen? How would that affect the UI and UX? How would we avoid covering up content with our fingers? We would have to limit ourselves to holding the tablet in specific ways so that we don’t cover the screen, just for the sake of a marginally bigger screen. Personally I don’t think it’s worth it. I would rather have the bezel.

if this does come out then apple really have hidden the leaks very well for the like the first time ever

Man, that would be tragic in my mind. When there are problematic questions the solution is never “lets just live without better tech.” Your questions are totally valid, but I can’t allow myself to believe that the wealthiest tech company in the world doesn’t have the creative resources to come up with a stunning, revolutionary solution. For one [and I’m no engineer] what about a millimeter wide touch-sensitive perimeter around the outside of the screen? When it is activated, then the software can respond to normal touch screen gestures differently at that exact location. This would not have to slow down standard touch UI at all. Obviously a simplistic answer, but if I came up with it in 5 minutes, imagine what Apple could do with a design team actually working on solutions. I sure hope Apple engineers are not paid to just follow the “inevitable clear path”

Or no one is interested enough in the new iPad to release it suggesting just a spec bump because the 2018 iPhone design has supposedly leaked from a facility in India today

If the reason for lack of leaks on new iPads is due to Apple clamping down on info security I think someone needs to pass the memo to the iPhone divisions. IPhone rumor updates still coming out fairly frequently, even today.

Hmm I’m not sure I understand your idea.
In any case, my overall point wasn’t that bezels should stay because there are questions, it was simply that going bezelless is much more complicated and uncertain than your analogy. It’s easy to say, Apple will come up with a genius solution to all the problems. Sure, if they do then of course why not embrace it. But that’s far from a given. One problem that no amount of coding can fix is covering up the content on the screen with your finger (and though I didn’t understand it, it didn’t seem like your idea did either). My preference for bezels over a slightly bigger screen was referencing that specific issue.

Unless......push the advertising on current range to boost sales before announcing new IPP.

It takes a while for the general public to come to know new products are available let alone coming so they will happily keeping buying the current range.

True but these rumors keep changing like the wind so how much faith we can put in them is anyone's guess.

I went out and bought a 12.9 this weekend, pretty sure a new model is not being announced till fall. Love it
Congrats and enjoy.

Wouldn't be very Apple to not launch a suite of new accessories just for their new range. Big margins on dem accessories!

True, but I also have the ability to return my case. So in the long run I would be only out a screen protector, most likely though since I’ve been a long-term customer of where I buy my protectors I would only have to pay a small upgrade fee.

I thought about waiting, but I’m glad I did not because now I have my iPad set up how I want it and I would be able to restore from backup.

So it all the pens on what the amounts, if they amount, and price Because right now I’m loving my iPad Pro.

I am wondering how many people use their iPad w/o a case?? With my case, I can see smaller bezels being a good thing, but no bezels a problem with cases. I know the arguments against facial recognition on the iPad, but like my X so much that it is the one new feature that would entice me to buy a new one.

BTW: Lots of sales and discounts on current iPads over the Memorial Day weekend. Is it possible that retailers are lowering their stock?

Me I mean the Smart Keyboard doesn’t really count

Don’t get the point of a big fat case either. Cost wise it’ll be as much as AC+. Smart Keyboard plus some kind of a cushioned sleeve for travel is my limit.

iPhones have been naked since the very first one including my X. I like to feel and admire the design of my gadgets. (Was about to say tools haha. Different meaning)

The Jetblack iPhone 7 got me hooked on the AC+ naked device philosophy. I think it’s funny how so many people buy these pretty phones and then they “need” the fugly otter box cases and then don’t want AppleCare...like wut is that logic o_O

Amen! I can’t actually remember ever having a case. Oh, iPhone 4. Loves that thing so I had a leather slip case but I was traveling a lot chucking it into a laptop bag.

Had the matte black 7+ and it was a thing of beaUty. Careless with a glass screen protector which did save my life one. The X doesn’t even have that. Don’t want to tempt fate here but it’s surposngly durable. Two spills. From about 3 feet up. Smack on the front of the screen and all is well.

Minor scratches and cosmetic damage I’m not worried about. At the end of the day it’s a tool to get a job done not a piece of jewelry. I genuinely like to appreciate good design and the tactile feel and pleasure of holding a phone. AC+ and AmEx has me covered.

If Apple doesn't release a new Pro, they seem to have transitioned to a 15 month life cycle for iPads. I believe they may release it in October as if they do it at the September event the iPhone CPU will be overshadowed by the iPad.

Yeah im thinking they might actually have an October event this year for the ipads, watch, airpods 2 and airpower (assuming none of those come at WWDC). Recently they haven’t gone two straight years without one (2013, 2014, 2016), and a 15 month cycle for the pros seems likely at this point since they waited so long to announce the 2nd gen pros as it is.

Only one reason I disagree with October. They miss back to school by ONE month. Look at their latest 'what's a computer' ad campaigns. (let's not get into whether it can replace a laptop or not, different discussion). Sometimes I wonder if kids entering Uni in 2018 even know how to use OSX/WIN10. They've grown up on iOs.

THat's the only reason I think a WWDC release is imminent. If not WWDC purchase, then at least an announcement with shipping in September in time for college. They'd be leaving too much money on the table. Could be fine if a student steps up to an Air or a MBP but, if they step DOWN to the basic iPad that's a problem. As far as iOS 12, last years pros were released without iOS11 except for the reviewers and tech blogs who had a beta.

Just a few days more. The speculation and discussion in fun though.
