Are you using a case on yours and screen protectors. I've ordered decent ones because I've seen from YOUTUBE the device is a bit of a finger print magnet. Is that true?

I am using these:

http://www.amazon.com/Spigen®-Prote...d=1400484538&sr=8-5&keywords=spigen+xperia+z2

The back on the black is a pretty big fingerprint magnet. I am currently using the Sony stand case that came included with my Z2, but I have ordered this case:

http://www.noreve.com/langue/en/product/Sony_Xperia_Z2_Tradition_B_leather_case.html

I think it will take a good while to get here since its coming from France, but it looks super nice. I also ordered the clear Spigen case on Amazon, but its not very good, the ports are hard to access, and the sides are flimsy. Strange, because normally I find Spigen's products to be solid.

I had my Z2 for a week or so and these are my impressions about the phone. Please note that I waited ages for this phone and really wanted it to be my next phone. I embraced the phone with a Sony fanboy attitude, certain of the Z2's superiority in every field. So not making some rage samesung fanboy comments here.

The good

Battery performance was really good for me at least, and stamina mode was incredible. The camera was solid and fast. Big thumbs up for Sony for including the hardware camera button.

I found the exterior design beautiful. However the phone wasn't as sturdy as I had expected.

I liked Sony's Android skin and overall I was very impressed with the speed and performance of the phone.

Unfortunately though the phone had couple of features that ruined it for me.

The screen

The screen wasn't bright enough to be honest. It was difficult to see the screen outdoors, even when then sun wasn't shining. But with that I could have lived with. It was the bloody digitizer shining trough the screen that killed it for me. I could see it indoors if the lighting was any brighter than normal "house lighting", I mean at a buss, at a mall, at my school and so on. It was just way too visible, especially against light background. But it got even worse in the sun. Normally I could see just a grid. In the sun I could also see these little dots in horizontal lines. The dotted line would "travel" up and down the screen as the ray of sun hit different parts of the screen. I compared the screen to several other phones wich none of had similar issues. I can see a very faint grid under my iPhone's screen when the screen is off and in direct sun light, but nothing like Z2.

Please see this thread as I'm not alone with this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2738585

I find it incredible that people can live that screen.

Overall sound quality

Right off the bat I thought the speakers were decent. I wasn't expecting much anyway. Then I noticed, that with higher volumes the phone would sort of vibrate. I could feel the vibration on my finger very clearly. Now this wasn't issue either since I never use the speakers of my phone anyway.

Then I noticed that the earpiece is pretty weak. Not very clear sound compared to other phones. During a call I would also hear almost constant static noise. I'm willing to admit that perhaps my earpiece was somehow defect since I read reports about crystal clear sound while speaking. But during a call I could, again, feel this annoying vibration on my finger as the other person spoke. It seriously bothered me and gave a cheap feeling.

Last but not least, microphone quality. I recorded some videos and WhatsApp sound messages, and the sound quality was very disappointing. It was weak and almost like muffled. Whats the point of having a good camera if the microphone is sh**? I also looked at some sample videos someone had shot at a concert, and the audio was just awful.

The verdict

Overall a great phone but with too many unrepairable issues. Definitely not worth over 600€ for me.

Mine arrived...

Initial impressions... bezels remind of a nexus 7 2013
Not as heavy as I thought it might be
Screen on auto brightness is a lot dimmer than the M8 or S5
Can't uninstall a lot of the unnecessary bloat (won't allow me to).
Bundled Headphones are really great ....
Sim card slot/tray is very plastic and flimsy (and cheap)
Its almost as big a finger print magnet as my Note Pro 12.2 screen.....

Will install google experience launcher on the device later.

I'd hold off if I were you. I'm not bowled over so far, but need to climatise more. Must Say I didn't think Sony would be bad on bloat when everyone kept saying it's very stock like, but by God there is a lot of detritus there. And Sony's launcher has some major quirks. Can't even set a static wallpaper for my homescreen for example... initial impressions of camera are underwhelming from the few test shots taken so far, and the actual feel if the device doesn't feel any more premium than the S5 despite glass & metal construction. Indeed the glass has a strange surface it's almost feels like one of those fake glass beakers where it's a strong plastic rather than glass. Compared to glass surface on the M8 screen, it really is strange. And BY GOD is it a finger print magnet. Did Sony even use an oleophobic coating? I'm not being wowed ....

Which firmware are you running? The initial firmware roll out, there were a handful of issues with the camera being very inconsistent and not being able to focus correctly. I am running 17.1.A.2.69 and it works beautifully as you can see on some of the pictures I have posted on Flickr and around this thread.

As for Sony's launcher and bloat, there really isn't that much bloat. Sure it has the Xperia Lounge and Walkman but they don't interfere with the experience of actually using the device at all. The launcher is simple to use and isn't a mess like TouchWiz is but you can always use Nova or something else if it doesn't suit your taste. Yes it is not as refined and fun to use as the M8, but having a much better camera is important to me plus you can factor in the waterproof and magnetic charging capabilities of the Z2 as well.

I agree that it's a fingerprint magnet, ESPECIALLY the black one having owned a black Z1 and Z1 Compact before which is why I got the white model where the fingerprints aren't that apparent.

I just wish there was a 32GB version of the Z2 because 16GB is borderline skimpy. If we can get an M8 with the camera capabilities of the Z2 then I would be sold on it, rather than posting my M8 on the For Sale forum :p

If you can get it new for $650, then go for it. That's a pretty good price.

I actually like that idea! News toys every six months! :)

Oh don't get me wrong, I like the idea but that also means they won't hold value the same.

I used to get the new Sony Ericsson as soon it was released I still remember the day I got my s700.

I'm thinking I picked a terrible time to buy mine, I could have waited a few days and saved $100. Then again, where is the fun in life if you're constantly waiting to get what you want?

Very few here wait to get what they want. :D

The issue is there are some devices you can flip for more bucks to get what you want next! :)

Wow...nice pic....great detail!
So how is it going after a couple of days?

Ok, its a nice phone, but nothing about it is super exciting me.

Camera is good indeed, but for every 1 great looking photo, I'm taking far more that are pants, with issues of over exposure or in Macro - a habit of not actually properly focusing.

The other thing is the screen, it just doesn't shine like the M8 or S5. It feels subdued and far less bright.

I will begin using it as a daily driver at the weekend so I spend more time with it, but so far it's a really good around smartphone, but feels much like jack of all trades.

Memory management is not a problem on it though, and as others have reported however it does get noticeably warmer than any smartphone I've used in the last 2 years..... likewise battery life hasn't been great for me so far .. but it usually takes a few cycles i find with Android before battery life settles down.

Thanks MRU for sharing your thoughts! :) The seller I know went down to $600 for a white Z2. I am tempted...but want to try the G3 first.
The OPPO Find 7a had the same screen issues...just not bright enough and color doesn't pop.

Yeah I likely wouldn't notice it too much if it wasn't for the plethora of other devices we have had that we can directly compare to it.

I have to chime in about the the digitizer grid being visible. Its really starting to bother me. It is incredibly apparent in bright sunlight as Zenton mentioned earlier. Everyday on my way into the office and my way home it really gets annoying to the point I don't want to use the screen outside and reach for my M8 or S5 instead. Inside it is mostly fine, but if this were my only everyday phone I'd be pretty upset with seeing grid lines on my phone every time I'm outside. The problem is probably amplified by Arizona having glaring bright sun all day, but a issue nonetheless.

wow...that is saying a lot......so what is it? Is there just what you wrote already or is there something new?

It's everything I wrote before and more.

Battery still meh.

Camera is infuriating. 8mp limit on modes and HDR is ridiculous and the results have not impressed me. Manual 20mp mode is poor focusing wise and end result still leaves a lot to be desired, especially comparing it to the S5.

Indeed many are just grainy soft focused rubbish, and whilst they may have more pixels than the M8, I'm finding they have no more detail. It's still compression artefact city....

Wallpapers on the device are terrible, keeps on resizing desktop wallpaper. If you use the slide show live wallpaper, the only way to apply a static portrait wallpaper, it has a bug which distorts the image when exiting camera or going back to home screen.

Bugs like that annoy.

Sonys bloat annoys me, more so thn Samsung's. And I'm not fan of any of their stock applications.

Glass can scratch VERY easily on the device. I've babied mine and somehow still have a tiny little scratch on the back .. WTF ! It's only been two days......

Just not enjoying this device in any shape or form ....

Well that rules it out for me! I value your opinion.....and will turn my attention to the G3 and M8 Prime.....

Just a few things - what firmware version are you on? Battery life is fantastic and is up to par with the HTC One M8. Also the camera quality is much better than the S5 for me. The newer firmware update fixed the auto focus issues.

What bloat is annoying you? Again, they don't pop out, interfere or do anything to the experience.

Oh well, everyone's opinions are different. At least you gave it a shot

Not sure what firmware, I'll check later for you.

Yeah it's just one of those things - I gave it a shot and whilst I love the headphones and Walkman stuff, nothing else sang to me. That doesn't mean it doesn't sing to others.

They're definitely must be something wrong with the camera on mine then because yeah I'm just not getting those results, and we all know I can take a photo, but the end result on mine just really underwhelming, and yet everywhere else reports great camera so I just don't know what's going on.

I think the straw that broke the camels back, was I got my Nilkin tempered glass protector and when I put it on, there was a fault in the protector leaving a horrid smudge line underneath the glass and I couldn't remove it. I know this is nothing to do with the phone but a fault of the protector, yet it felt like "another thing on the list of why it's not for you MRU... "

I'm sure others will get great enjoyment from the Z2, but it just wasn't for me.
