It's the new apple without Steve Jobs.

Steve Jobs would have bought the $2000 panel from NEC and sold the rMBP for a base price of $3500? Because that's the only way you're getting perfect uniformity on IPS.

I agree that Samsung and LG are both being hugely disappointing, but where else can you go without spending unreasonable cash? Sharp, I guess, since that's what's happening.

Plenty of yellow, uneven IPS screens went out on iPads and iPhones while he was still in charge. You can't buy quality higher than what actually exists.

yea, I think the company is going down the drain faster than an unwanted baby on prom night.

I'm going to return this computer tomorrow. If I can't get a screen that meets my standards, I'm switching to PC. And this is coming from an Apple customer of 15 years. So, that should tell you lot something.

You won't be seeing any higher quality displays there either, unless you're willing to take a chance on Dell's IGZO (could be exactly the same). They're buying from the same display manufacturers.

In the UK this macbook pro basically costs 3500 dollars.

You know that's not a reasonable counter-point. If the 2600 machine costs 3500 in your country, the one with a $2000 panel would cost ~5000.

I'm just ringing up that the top of the line macbook pro in many countries does cost more than 3000 dollars, which is a hell of a lot of money. If apple can't deliver quality retina screens within the 3000 dollar price range, they should at least give us an option to get a quality non-retina screen. I care more about the screen being uniform and of good quality than I care about is having 2880x1800 (or whatever it is).

So is it safe to say that all Retina Macbook Pros are "warm"er than others? Which means if it was "evenly warm", then it is considered normal?

I'd do anything for an evenly warm macbook pro, because you can calibrate that so that it is much better. It's hard to calibrate the unevenness out. Regardless, a uniformly warm display is less annoying that it half your display being warmer than the other half. Makes my screen look dirty all the time.

I usually prefer an evenly "cool" screen so that it doesn't look like your looking at a filter of yellowish white. But there doesn't seem to be any "cool"/pure whites out there.

I haven't seen one. I do have the same tastes as you in this matter.

Yup its highly annoying. Everything across the line is warm aka yellow...sometimes urine/multivitamin yellow.

Well Apple has dispatched me a new notebook. It is coming on the 6th of November. Guess I'm headed back to the waiting thread. haha :D

Did they let you hold onto the laptop while you wait?

If I wanted to yes, but I decided to get rid of it asap. I have no use for a defective notebook. I'm using my older 17" MBP at the moment.

I guess the question is what is the perfect white?

Is it the white on the iPad Air?

The white on the iPhone 5s?

Nexus 7?

MacBook Air?

Classic MacBook Pro?

How are you determining that it's "in the middle" ?!?!
(not too cold, not too warm).

There are ways to determine what the proper white should be. But it seems as though everyone has different tastes and different products have different calibrations... for whatever reason.

And you know what? Some people just don't care! They are happy & live with what they have not even noticing the variations on the white balance of their displays.

You can post all the pictures you want. But I bet even the camera taking the pictures for the majority of posters are ATW the photo (auto trace white balancing) - meaning that the picture is pointless in determining the correct white.

A perfect white is one that looks almost blue tinted instead of yellow tinted.

Anyone have any comments about the pics in my last post? Is it one of the many ones with some form of problem with yellow tinting?

My iPhone 5s is yellowish while my iPhone 5 was of a perfect blue white. I've already made 3 exchanges and all of them were yellow so i gave up. Of course the blue white is nicer but I'm getting use to the yellow now and there seems to be so many of them I just don't have time to go to the Apple store and change it over and over. It seems Apple have a real serious issue with the quality of their screens supplier no matter the device ... Too bad they advertise their retina display as the best when you might not get to enjoy it depending on which screen you will get ... RIP Apple Quality Control.

People, how can you expect people to tell if your screen is yellow from a camera phone pic, or any camera??

It depends on the white balance chosen by the camera and the quality of the image, nevermind the shooting angle.

Exactly what I'm doing. I've gone back to my 17 and waiting for the replacement screen on my computer. I do miss the size of the 17" screen. I'm sure I will get use to the smaller screen. I will probably scale the resolution one step to the right in the options to give me a similar screen real estate when I get the 15 back.

I'm going to return mine in 2 hours. I'll let you people know what the result is. If I don't have any luck, I'm going to call Apple.

I may end up getting one of the previous generation machines. I don't remember people complaining about uneven temperature on those machines.
