Update.

I asked apple for a extra charger and a 32GB flash drive for my trouble with all the replacements. This is £125 (or 200 dollars) of goods. Apple agreed, and they are going to ship the items to me all for free next week. So, this does make me feel a little better about the experience. At least I am getting some free stuff for my trouble. LOL

I perhaps could have asked for even more, but there wasn't really anything else that I wanted that I thought they would give me. I mean sure I'd take a new iPad air or iPad mini, but I didn't think that was realistic.

I asked for a Mac Pro, he talked me down to klondike bar.

Replacement Received

Hey gang.

Just received my first (and hopefully last) replacement. Not going to make any bold proclamations yet, but so far so good.

This is a Batch 'Q' machine, for my fellow insane Serial Numberists. :p

The body is sound--no issues at all with build, finish or keyboard.

And the display is good. Samsung, strong whites (not piercingly clinical, though), and consistent backlighting.

On the 'grey bars test', the bottom bar looks just marginally warmer, but the discrepancy is extremely subtle and goes away when I change my viewing angle. Any shift in temperature is less noticeable than on my last one, and I personally found my last one totally acceptable in that regard.

Now, I'm sure this display exhibits variances from one region to another, as do all IPS displays, but I'm pretty fussy and would have to qualify this one as properly "within spec". It looks nice and even--no distractions, no irregularities to obsess over.

So there. Provided things stay this way, I'll be--wait for it--ACTUALLY HAPPY! with this rMBP.

Good luck to everyone else who's still in the hunt!

Bingo! ;)

I'm in exactly the same boat.

The silver lining is that I get to enjoy the exquisite fetish that is unboxing another MacBook Pro. (I wonder if that experience loses its magic after the fifth or sixth machine?)
I got my replacement. This one is an LG screen (first was Samsung). Instantly noticed very warm colors (in other words, yellow). If its uniform though I'll keep it. Anyone have a good way of testing this? My eyes start playing tricks on me after starring at the screen so long.

Just tried the "gray bar" picture test where there is a white bar at the top and bottom and gray in the middle.

imac.squeaked.com

the screen is fugly and yellow. I am SO DAMN disappointed. Again. I think this one might be worse than the original because the white bar on the bottom is distinctly yellow compared to the top. And the moronic Apple employees wouldn't help me with the first replacement either.

By the time I get this one replaced it will be over a month lost of productivity. My 2009 hp laptop can't handle anything anymore.

If I go for another exchange I will probably get another crap screen because Apple sucks at making computers and quality control. Should I send it in for repair? And if I do that is there a good chance they scratch and screw it up even more?

Sorry for the ranting. :(

Mine is the "standard" Samsung display: LSN154YL01-A01. I wouldn't put much stock in that however--there is evidence of good and bad display types for each manufacturer and product number.

Brightness is good--100% is much too bright for me in a dark room. (I have it at about 60% now in a rather dark living room.) It's not IGZO, but I wouldn't call it "dim" by any means.

The only real advice I have is to try to get the freshest machine possible--it's entirely possible that quality control has been tightened up since the first few batches. (I would suggest serial numbers where the fifth character is a 'P' or later...)

Try to get a more "factory-fresh" machine. No guarantees, but in my case QC definitely seems to be of a higher standard...

Hehe, so we got LG screens that are more yellow than Samsung screens now? :D

Best way to test is take your Macbook Pro to an Apple Store and compare it against other rMBP. If your screen is off compared to the other rMBP's, then you know something is not right.

But if your yellows are even, you can try to calibrate it to match the whitness / blueness of the other screens.

I was told that this is more prevalent on LG screens because they use a different kind of filter ending up with red hues leaking on the right and green on the left.

It looks worse on the pictures right? And at certain angles, it looks black right?

When the display is on in normal use age I don't notice the yellow as much as I do the purple on the right side. It just casts this haze on the screen.

How does your screen look like that? Is that supposed to be a plain black page?

Correct just a plain black image to see the screen.

Yes, I don't work on my computer with a black background, however these colors are noticeable when watching movies, in photo programs and using full screen with black bars on the screen, and a purple haze is visible after starring at the screen for a while.

The black just amplifies it so you can see it when taking a picture with a cell phone.

That's just bonkers.

Suffice to say, I don't think this thread would be the laughing stock of the MR forums if every posted screenshot looked like THAT.

It's pretty funny--I've spent all morning using my new computer casually and occasionally comparing the whites at the top of the display to those at the bottom, in an effort to establish whether the bottom part is actually "warmer". Each time I think I see a yellowish tint, I just tilt the display back a few degrees and it goes away.

That's when I know I'm officially looking too hard. ;)

has anyone gone through the return/exchange/replace process with best buy? sounds like everyone's buying from the apple store. I'm thinking about buying a 15 in from best buy and i just want to be sure that if i end up with a bad screen, i'll be able to keep replacing until i find one that's good. obviously like everyone im hoping i just get lucky first time around, but do wnat to prepare for the worst...

Best buy will let you replace it no questions asked, but if you replace it too many times (like over 5), you will get banned from returns for 90 days. They use a third party tracker to track all returns and exchanges. This has happened to me before. They will however, give you a warning before they start rejecting returns.

I didn't know about this. I usually just return it for a refund to avoid complications, wait for the credit to be posted, come back after a day or two and repurchase. Is there a limit for this too?

Yes, there is a limit for what you just described. They pay a third party called - The Retail Equation, to track ALL returns and exchanges, no matter the reason. Return or exchange too many times within a certain time period (maybe months, or even within a year, not sure), and you will get flagged, and banned from returns for 90 days. Returns and exchanges both count as the same thing.
