Bought a Air to use for productivity purposes whilst i figure out this screen saga. Its funny but i'm actually loving the Air. Sure the screen isn't IPS or retina but its evenly lit and there are no stains/blotches distracting me during usage. Its also quite capable...plus dat battery life

I really like it but alas i desire a Pro. 16GB RAM for VMWare and a dedicated graphics chip to drive my 27" Cinema are a must.

That said i'm massively impressed with the Air, if it had a 16GB option with Retina i might be tempted to keep it. Yes i know the 13"rMBP fits the bill but their screens are from LG and there have been reports of IR.

Its one thing having a yellow stained screen, its another to be stuck with ghosting.

Yes, there is a limit for what you just described. They pay a third party called - The Retail Equation, to track ALL returns and exchanges, no matter the reason. Return or exchange too many times within a certain time period (maybe months, or even within a year, not sure), and you will get flagged, and banned from returns for 90 days. Returns and exchanges both count as the same thing.

What is the limit?

Just did a yellow tint test does warrent a return?i know some are getting annoyed with me always asking but I spent tons of money on this.

So what am I asking for when I go to grab a 15" rMBP tomorrow?

all i've managed to gather from this monster thread is that maybe serial with week N or later? that seems to be no guarantee of anything either, but there's at least one week Q build with a good screen... soo ya, not sure how much use it is to ask for anything in particular.

Mine is a 'Q' and the screen is good. I've read reports of 'N' models with bad displays, so if you're in a store, maybe ask for an 'O' serial or later?

Bear in mind, this is all pure conjecture... but still arguably better than flying blind. Maybe. ;)

I only had to go through one exchange myself, but I must say the minor stress was worth it--these displays are pretty stunning when they're not defective.

Looks really good compared to my last 2.

I just did a black screen test on mine and it looks just like yours. This is my second one. Do you think I should exchange it or send it in for repair or just keep it and deal with it?

----------

Also, can anyone post a screen test (of both the black screen test and the white bar test) comparing a yellow tint screen with a good, non problematic screen? I'm just curious what one looks like lol.

Just return the 13" MBP get a maxed out AIR i7/256/8gb for same price and never worry about yellowish stuff... no one will buy your yellow laptop when it comes to selling it in future.

AIR also supposed to come out with retina, so im sure it will be yellow then also, but I wont have that issue since i got the AIR

just my 2 cents to save you all the headache

Long time watcher of this thread - thought it was about time I contributed.

My first 15" rMBP (2.3, 512gb, 750M) arrived on Monday, with a very noticeable yellow tint on the whole left side of the screen. Went through AppleCare to sort out a replacement, which arrived on Friday. This one is much improved, but still has a very annoying yellow patch in the bottom left corner - now that I know it's there my eyes are drawn to it and I can't keep this one knowing how much I paid for the machine. Both have been Samsung A01 screens, and both production week M.

Guys that are going through this from the UK - I think that's Quu and pendragon1984 from what I can tell - when you have called to arrange replacement machines, who have you called? Do you call AppleCare, go through troubleshooting, then get put through to aftersales to arrange a replacement, or just call aftersales direct?

I had a N model replacement once and it's screen wasn't particularly bad, but not perfect. My current screen is an N model though, and it's perfect.

I've been calling AppleCare. They ask me a few questions, and sometimes have me reset the SMC (or whatever). They then immediately put me through to someone else. Both times I called I got put through to a senior person, who sent me the replacement first and said they would have the screen checked. Both the screens I got as a result of this were better than any of the ones I saw in stores. Though the second screen wasn't as good as the first (hence I swapped them).

(P.S. I apparently got AppleCare for free from Apple in addition to the extra charger and Lacie USB flash drive. So, it pays to complain.)

First time I went to the website and they then call you. Ever since then I've been dealing with the same support representative from Apple via email and he has been able to organise my other replacements for me through email.

They are really fast to reply to email too, sometimes 2-3 minutes after I send one I get a reply.

Is it normal for a smartphone to have much brighter screen and whiter whites then a laptop screen? Afaik this is normal, but thought I would ask. My HTC One (which has a superb screen) has a brighter screen (noticeably) and the whites are clearly whiter. When I put it in front of my rMBP there is a very clear difference. But when normally using the rMBP the screen looks white.

I'm in a dark room at the moment and testing out the screen again. Did that test with the grey bars and some white/black images. Again with low, medium and max brightness.

Overal I can draw a few conclusions.

- The screen looks pretty much uniform: there are no clear differences between different areas.

- The only thing I do see is this. When I block most of the middle of the screen with an object and compare the far left with the far right, there seems to be a difference. Left being more warm and right appearing more "white". It's all relative though, because if I move my head slightly more to the left, the left part of the screen looks just as white as the right part. Pretty weird stuff.

- The maximum brightness suddenly doesn't appear so high anymore. My smartphone is much brighter. And I'm now using the screen at max brightness for 15 minutes in a pretty much dark room and it's not burning my eyes, which should happen at max brightness in a dark room.

I have a LG screen and the rMBP itself is produced in week 44, letter "M". Having owned the device for about a week now, I'm starting to shift the largest part of my focus from "owning my first awesome Mac" to the quality of the device itself. Having till the 7th of January to return/exchange it, I'm taking my time with making sure it's perfect.

I wanted to post a picture of the screen taken with my phone even if it's not the best way to show it, but however I tried, I just couldn't make a picture that truly would be useful.

100% the same situation as your. 44 week...LG SJE1..i've wrote before
uniformity ok, no yellowish, no ir
BUT brightness=dim, not ok, same situation -on max brightness in dark room like really 70% only. i played with presets but no good. I plan to change it on monday.

Aren't you afraid you will get something worse? Uniformity ok, no yellowish, no IR is pretty much great. I would be dreading getting another one and having chance to get either one of those other problems...

And until now, even in well lit rooms during the day, I find the brightness perfectly usable. So yeah... I would really have to compare it to another one with max brightness and see if the difference is very big. This is the entire problem, I can't really compare my device to others. I have the feeling the keyboard on mine isn't the best either... doesn't feel really solid, but don't know how they should normally feel. The keyboard on my 13" Dell XPS 13 ultrabook feels more solid to be honest.. especially the caps lock and shift keys on the left side on my MBP feel "flimsy, hollow". If you touch them they make an empty-like sound. A different sound then the keys in the middle/right of the keyboard.

Another thing is that the black hinge moves in the middle, makes sounds when carrying the laptop with the black hinge resting in your hand. Again it's not very bad (I would have instantly decided to return it then), but it's there.

Anyway, this thread isn't about keyboards and others. :p

even the same -not good of black hinge, but in general ok with keyboard though on my 2011 air it's solid and better. about compare of brightness-i specially was on our premium reseller store and saw same model with same brightness(LG screen also). Man said that if You want more brightness play with presets but they are not good.
So it will be simple to change it cause some people from this thread gone through some changes and finally have good screens. For 3200$ i think we should do that even You can try to stay with this notebook(ask Apple) until change will come.
finally 44 week not so good...
