Great post! I've literally gone all out OCD by reading this thread, I was so happy when I got my current macbook I thought finally I landed a perfect one, I came home checked it out again and it looked great nice and white no yellowing that I could notice, then I thought to post a pic here again to see wabt ppl thought and when some said that it didn't look great I immediately started staring at my screen and all of a sudden I started seeing things but I now see that I'm seeing things that are not there, there is however a very very subtle light yellow tinge at the bottom but you have to look to really see it. I think this thread is making us all crazy and returning MacBooks which probably have nothing wrong with them.

I think if you use a black background and there is no yellowing/bleed it is a better test.

The white page will quickly "oversaturate" your retina and you will find it very hard to tell if it is really yellowed with a good screen. I am an ophthalmologist and a white background at full brightness is just going to overwhelm the rods and cones and cause some after-imaging making it very hard to tell what is white and what is yellow.

BTW, each eye will have a slightly different sensitivity.

IMHO, a truly bad screen will be more obviously esp with the black page.

As I look at some of the pics, it is my opinion there is nothing wrong with them.

Some are clearly very defective.

For me, I find the screens at 75%(except during the day with a brighter office lights) to be too bright. I prefer 50-60% is much better.

FWIW, no matter what brightness you are not hurting your eyes except to cause irritation with the overly bright background.

I looked at my serial number and it is "m."

I just want to get this whole thing behind me so I can start using my computer. The problem with me is that I have a BTO model so they cant check my screen beforehand since it ships directly from China and they don't have any of those in the retail stores.

I will definitely ask for compensation this time around since it will be over a month between when I ordered my first and by the time I get my third computer. So should I ask for a serial number N or O on the fifth character or does that matter?

If you're doing a BTO, you are likely to get a 'Q' or later at this point. That's what I just got and my machine is a good one. My first was an M with very visible shadows in it due to uneven backlighting.

Of course I'm personally dealing with a sample of size of 2 machines, so this is far from conclusive evidence, but the theory is that newer batches are perhaps smaller and subject to stricter quality control. Obviously no one outside of Shanghai or Cupertino knows whether this is actually the case, but it's something to go on...

Nice to hear from an expert on the subject!

I definitely found myself "creating" yellow blotches just from staring at my bright white screen for a few seconds. I was both relieved and alarmed to see that these blotches followed my gaze even as I looked up at the wall!

Suffice to say, I have already called customer support and I have a new wall on the way. Hope I get a good one this time... ;)

Well my second machine arrived only two days ago this Friday (November 22) and it was "M" so its not like the newer machines have a later serial number. When did you get yours?

I will try to get on the phone when I order my next one and request a serial number "O" or later and see if that gets anywhere and I will ask them for free Apple Care.

So anyone at this point know if the good ones have some serial? I mean "look one with the serial starting with X, thats the good ones" or still this is a lotto?

P

also one of the 5 models i went through was an LG. it was terrible. brightness was limited, so was the range of the display.

This one is a samsung

Cool yeah can you take a picture comparing it to a display that you are certain is normal and also do a black screen test in the dark? (Go to youtube and search black screen) There is a 10 hour video with just a black screen and full screen that and turn off the lights and see if there are weird color shifts.

All right, so contacted Apple and they're calling me tomorrow (for an online replacement). Hopefully this one will be better than my current 2.3/16/512 screen (which is LG but has a pink tint at top and yellow tint towards the middle)

I've had so many returns that BB employee said, "You are here more than me!" :)

So alternated 3 stores for the exchanges and/or returns.

It's on a white screen...tbh I could care less what happens on a black screen but I need a clean white screen so that I'm not distracted by dirty spots while working on a document or reading something.

I find that there will always be abit of unevenness on a black screen

Best Buy Ban

Just to add to what was said a couple of pages ago, I actually was banned from returning any more items to Best Buy. I don't necessarily think it matters which store you go to for the return.

Long story short, I called the company that they use to track the returns and explained several of those were for defective items. It was about 30 days, but the ban was finally removed.

I would not continually return items to Best Buy. I think in that case, your best bet is an Apple Store (if they are close to you) or online.

This is why Best Buy requires your Driver's License for returns.

Worst Buy is retarded and the same has happened to me. Needless to say I will never shop there again. I returned a total of 5 things in 1 year's period and they banned me from returns for 90 days. Bunch of monkeys working there and terrible business practices. They don't even consider the amount of $ spent or # of items bought. They only look at # of returns and total amount of money in items that was returned - most retarded thing ever. You could spend $1,000,000 spread over 1000 purchases but if you reach say, 5 returns - you get banned.

GJ monkeys - this is why you're going out of business.

No, batch should not make any difference for LCD screen. Go ahead and take your chances exchanging it. Just be aware that it is pretty rare to find a perfect LCD screen... so there will have to be some point where you settle. Good rule is - if you don't notice it in daily operation, just keep it.

----------

I can see them refusing to correct the yellow tint... but the creaking case, IMO, is inexcusable and should be fixed. I would make a big stink at the store if it were me (unless it was misuse that created the creaking issue).

I agree with your point, great rule! I also have a small yellow tint on the left corner and would never notice that in daily use. I found it only after conducting some tests mentioned here. Nevertheless I decided to keep rMBP 13", otherwise there is a high probability to get IR and other well-known drawbacks with the new one.

I also have a small yellow tint on the right side of mine as well but it's at the bottom near the corner, now that you know it's there can you see it when looking that spot? I never would of noticed mine as well if I didn't do an image test but now that I know it's there i keep looking at and i notice it even though it's really subtle and small.

I can understand the stress you guys go through, worst feeling is mailman comes you get the laptop, open it up and boot... your shaking and hoping its a white one :)

Then bang its a yellow defect...

Someone told me that 90% of the screens are left overs from last retina model, apple is trying to get rid of before the new IGZO gets introduced... its a logical thing to do.. I mean, for a normal user they wont notice this defect...

Real problem is, accepting the defect, retinas flaw is the yellowish defect will start to grow on your screen, good luck selling it next year.

I had 3 replacemens, I was tired of buying something apple is trying to get rid off, before they move to sharps IGZO, i ended up getting a maxed out i7/8gb/256gb AIR, 14 hours of battery blew me away.

Apples quality is at a pitfall, sad but true.

You can see on attached images some issues with yellow tint. I only saw a yellow tint on left bottom corner. It is important to point out that yellow effect is much more obvious on photos than for eyes, however, it doesn't bother me at all. Maybe If I would be a professional photographer then I could have some complains, but in my case this is not an issue. Answering on your question, I never noticed this in daily use and even after revealing this yellow tint issue in tests it doesn't bother me in my daily tasks. So, the bottom line is if you are not professional photo\video editor and are not able to notice it in daily use and never noticed it before - just relax and enjoy your rMBP. :) IMO

If yellow issue will begin to bother me I swap it out (or fix) until warranty ends.
