Purple

My concern with my display isn't so much of the yellow, but the fact my screen either looks (or the contrast from the yellow the makes the screen look) purple on the right hand side. If the entire screen was uniform, I could at least semi-calibrate it.

Having 1 samsung, and 2 LGs, I feel like there are more LGs out there and the samsung has better good displays.

My unit the 3rd one that is going back to Apple has developed yet another fault. The enter key on the keyboard is now half broken. If I press it down anywhere on the centre or lower it doesn't go down, it sort of just creeks and it feels like the mechanism is jammed.

I've barely used the keyboard on this thing but it seems every time I go to use it I find something else broken on it. Starting to wonder if I have elves in my home smashing up my electronics when I'm asleep.

Anyone else's enter key acting funky or just me? - Glad this is going back anyway, the sooner the better.

What is going on with apple? It's issue after issue, how is ur screen on your machine? Cause if you got a good screen I would just go to an apple store and get it fixed cause at the rate apple is going you could end up with another bad screen.

Question, I read one of your posts and you mentioned that doing a SMC reset actually got rid of the light yellow tint you had on your screen, is this true?

I've been following this thread silently since it started. I think it's time to post my experiences. I purchased my first 13" rMPB on OCT 24th, and noticed the yellow tinting on lower LEFT side of the display after a day of use. I bought a second one with the same configuration a couple of days later, the yellow tinting was still there, but when compared side by side, the overall whiteness of the screen was pinkish on the first one. The second one was noticeably whiter or cooler in color, and more bright, but I felt the yellowness was easier to detect on the second due to that. And well, I've been stuck in an exchange cycle ever since. I'm currently on my 8th replacement, yes 8th!! My 3rd and 6th rMPB's had a pink blotch on the upper right hand side of the screen, it was noticeable even in a brightly lit room. Both were easily the worst out of all of them. Only one of all these rMPB's had a sturdy keyboard. All the other ones, including the one I currently have really loose keys. I've compared every single one I've had with the next one I got. My current replacement has the lower 1/3 of the screen that's yellow. Now, I think I know for a fact, after going through 8 different rMBPs's, that every single "Retina" display out there this generation suffers from uneven tinting, at least for the 13" with 2.4/8/256. Because it's close to impossible for my luck to be this bad. Acknowledging all this, it's been 4 days since I got the one I'm currently on, and I decided at first to just live with it.

My question is, is there even a slight chance that this problem might go
away over time? I remember reading about the last gen rMPB's last year that it was something related to gluing, and it evens out over time. Because at this point, I'm not sure I wanna keep this machine, knowing I've spent $1500 on a defective machine (I know, it's not even close to what most of you guys have been spending on those CTO's).

I really don't have any alternatives. I can't go back to Win 8. And I wouldn't mind the MBA's display, or ANY display for that matter, as long as it's evenly tinted. But the MBA actually comes out higher in price if you configure the ram to 8GB, and the processor to 1.7GHz. So it doesn't make sense to spend MORE on a laptop which has a substantially lower powered processor (ULT), and a little less advanced GPU (HD5000 vs HD5100 on the rMPB), not to mention the fricken theoretically inferior display to the "Retina" models.

So what would you guys do?

I've had 2 displays that suffered the exact same issue you're describing. I'd exchange it ASAP, knowing that there are better displays (although not evenly white) than the one you have.

There might be a crumb or something in it. Regardless, it's pretty easy to take keys off. You may be able to fix it.

it would be amazing with just the SMC this thing will be fixed...

Yes it would be, I believe it was Quu who had posted it, I'm so tired of the back and forth for a perfect screen and if u do get a perfect screen then the mac will creak lol, then you take it back cause of creaking and get one that is silent but the you notice a light bleed, it's never ending lol.

Just thought of something, if apple is in a fude with Samsung and apple has sued them for copying iphone features and won then how is in the hell is samsung making screens for apple, I'm now thinking that these samsung screens have been recycled from the last gen of retina displays.

Arg. Just ordered my second replacement. First one had a nice screen and vibrant colors but the chassis sounded like a retirement center and the black strip in the back had major flex in the center. My current one has a beautiful frame but the screen has had a dirty yellow look from the beginning and white webpages (such as MacRumors) look splotchy. Also has some yellow tint in the bottom left corner and the back-lighting appears uneven along the lower section of the screen. Both of my screens have been LG (LP-SJE1).

Hopefully the third time is the charm! Somewhere Samuel Beckett is reading this and smiling at all of us.

Well my first replacement arrives tomorrow. I sure hope it isn't uneven and yellow or has some new problems. Wish me luck.

I'm in exactly the same boat.

The silver lining is that I get to enjoy the exquisite fetish that is unboxing another MacBook Pro. (I wonder if that experience loses its magic after the fifth or sixth machine?)

I do see a very very small very light yellow tint on the right hand side near the bottom corner but I have to really look at it to notice its not the kind of yellow tint that jumps out at u.

99.9999% perfect screen for a high pixel density

I can't tell if your being serious or joking lol, from that pic you must see the yellow tint

I am being serious. The EXTREMELY slight yellow tinting on that screen is typical of a high pixel density IPS screen - you have to remember that no retina screen will be 100% perfect and uniform.

The yellow tint is in your mind - and now your mind is concentrating on it, it's all you will see.

Ok took this with a camera

That screen is fine. If it had a load of dead pixels or bad image retention then maybe a different story.

Stop being OCD and enjoy your computer! When you look back on this when your elderly, you will realise just how stupid it was worrying and stressing over these VERY minor things.

Look everyone, I think it's irrefutable by now because of the number of replacements people are having to go through that these retina macbook pros almost all have some issue or other. The majority of the screens certainly have yellow tint somewhere. I think the only way to have any decent chance of getting a good screen is to call Apple and raise a big fuss so that they promise to check your screen first to be sure that there is no yellow tint. Even doing that may not work; they said they would check my 5th replacement, but the screen wasn't great. So, even though people are right to ask for replacements, I think it's unlikely that anyone is going to get a machine with a good screen and no other issues without going through 4+ machines or combining the parts of different machines (like I did). Just trying to be realistic here.

For anyone who has the money, I recommend just buying 5 at once, taking the best, and sending the rest back. You could also swap screens if necessary.

For anyone one who can live with windows, I recommend getting that new dell XPS 15 for now. You could go back to Mac later if you wanted.

----------

I took the key off and there wasn't a crumb, instead the plastic hooks were broken off.

SH--T! I can't remember Quu if the computer is perfect otherwise or not. If it is perfect otherwise, it's worth doing some googling to see if you can order that little plastic piece that holds the key. You could fix it yourself.

Hey guys, I have just received my third rMBP.

I find this really difficult to judge, because I have been growing accustomed to the yellow gradient screens for the past weeks, but this one actually appears to have a white screen. Chassis seems to be pretty solid, as well as the keyboard. I do have the idea that it types a bit.. different than the last one, but it is definitely sturdier than the first rMBP. The screen seems to be consistent and showing perceptible difference in whites and greys. Blacks are also very good and deep.

I am not going to do a final judgement on this case yet, as I have only been playing with it for about 15 minutes now. I will get back to you.

If it remains like this, though, I am keeping it, for this one should satisfy my needs screen wise. It does not feature the hideous, gross, clearly noticeable shifts in colour - nor backlighting inconsistencies.

Fingers crossed.

Nah this whole computer is messed up. The screen is messed up, the enter key. I've taken some charts from my Spyder4Elite calibrator and I thought you guys might like to see:

In the first two grey images it is checking the uniformity of the light bar all over the display. As you can see in the top corners it is as much as 14% off (!) the centre. Anything over 2% is considered defective.

100% Brightness:

50% Brightness:

And now maybe the most damning of all, actual temperature of the display:
ih8tmNW.png

To my eye only the top centre to top-right does look perfectly 100% white. The middle looks slightly slightly yellow, the bottom looks incredibly dark like a dark shadow has been cast on the display which exaggerates the white point towards a yellow phase as seen in the calibrators graph.

The calibrator to get these results took nine readings on each section of the display with the centre of the calibrator exactly where the numbers are positioned in the charts above. This is from my 3rd replacement machine, the one that is going back to Apple.

Another reading the calibrator took showed the centre of the display is only 97% sRGB now. When I first got this notebook I tested it 3 times over a single day and each time the centre read 99% sRGB. It also was more uniform without a dark cast in the bottom. It is my opinion the notebook is failing over time.

Oh man this really sucks, now I'm thinking that I should just return mine for a refund cause I'm afraid once I'm over the 14 day return period and my screen gets worse apple may see it as normal and not give me a replacement screen, I wonder if maybe I should wait for the new sharpe screens to come out.

One thing is for sure apple seems to be going downhill and it's such a shame, I wonder what Steve Jobs would would say to all this.
