The iPhone 8 Plus is the best phone ever made

The only things I don’t like about the X/Xs/Xs Max are the lack of a home button and the OLED screen. I’ve never really been a fan of OLED screens since they all seem to have a strange tint when compared to LCD. I can tell that Apple has tried to calibrate the colors on the OLED display to as closely match the colors on their previous LCD as possible, but the colors still look off to me. I stare at LCD screens for most of the day, so OLED screens seem very jarring to me.

Regarding the home button, I get that the home button is 10+ year old technology and we need to move on. My major gripe is trying to access multitasking on the home button-less iPhones. It takes a split second longer to get to the multitasking screen. I use it quite often and this often drives me nuts. I know it’s possible to toggle a virtual home button through accessibility shortcuts, but there’s an even longer delay when I tap it.

For those two reasons above, I actually went out the day before the Xs/Xs Max announcement to buy a 256gb iPhone 8 Plus since I was afraid they would discontinue the higher capacity after the announcement (which turned out to not be true). I was previously on the 6s Plus.
You can switch between apps even faster by simply swiping left/right on the home bar. It’s way faster and easier than going through the multitasking screen. In fact really the only time you should ever even be using that screen is that rare occasion when an app freezes and you need to force close it.

I have the 8+ for work and actually got one for personal use as well. I think it is a fantastic all around phone and there just isn't anything not to like about it. However, I wouldn't say it's the best iPhone ever. I did get an iPhone XS Max and while it's not perfect there are many things I like about it better. You know if the iPhone 8+ meets your need then that is perfect. Work wise I think it's a perfect phone for me, but personally I prefer the iPhone XS Max and at the end of the day we are both happy. I honestly only got the XS Max because I had $500 in gift cards, but I am really glad that I did.

To me, the 6 is the best iPhone ever. I can fit it in my pocket, use it with 1 hand, have a battery that lasts the whole day, use a headphone jack, and the screen looks great. It performs as well as I need it to for any app I want. Perhaps the best thing is that it’s free - it’s already in my pocket. I can continue using the phone I have and not spend minimum $750 for a new one.

“LCD on iPhone 8 Plus is as good as OLED. (Well that's my opinion. I put them side-by-side and I can't tell the difference. And if there is a difference, it's so slight that it makes no material difference.)”

No offense intended but I can’t for the life of me understand why people keep saying this! Side by side they couldn’t be MORE different. It’s literally night and day! Xs and XS Max’s display makes IPS look so washed out and horrible in comparison.

They say this because scientifically the 8/8+ and the X/Xs are calibrated to look the same - same 625 nits brightness, same P3 gamut, and basically same white point (I know the Xs is 6500K, I think the 8/8+ were just slightly cooler, like 6600-6700K per Displaymate's testing). The PPI difference is all that's really left, and black levels which were never a problem with Apple's LCDs anyway.

At the end of the day, if the screens are calibrated the same, I'd rather have LCD because OLED has its share of trade offs like off axis color shift, burn in (not a problem for Apple though), PWM, etc. With an LCD all you had to worry about was yellow tint and even backlighting.

I wanted so badly for the OLED to blow me away, but given it's intentional calibration by Apple, it just didn't. I don't think any Apple screen will ever blow me away again because they will forever be calibrated with the current color/whitepoint accuracy.

The 6/6s had the best looking screens IMO. Cool 7200K white point and vibrant, saturated (but not cartoonish) colors. My 6 was the last time I was wowed by an Apple screen and felt it was truly significantly better than the screen on my prior phone. The last several iPhones have just gotten warmer and warmer and warmer and duller with P3 gamut (I realize a 6500K white point and P3 gamut is accurate, I just don't care).

The main problem I have with the 8 plus is the size, the weight, and the bezels.

Looks outdated to me tbh.

Say what you want about the the notch but at least it looks like 2018.

If the XR had been 5.1 inches instead of 6.1 then that would be the best iPhone ever, simply because of those awesome new colours. It’s a shame they had to make it so big. As a result I’m holding on to my 7 until September 2019, at the earliest

Most movies are actually ultra widescreen, which look better in these new taller phones.

But TBH I would have been fine with my 7 Plus right now. Phones have matured. I still hVe my iPad Air 2 and don’t see any reason to upgrade.

I actually love the XR. Mainly bc of those cool colors lol.

But I do wish the screen was better.

LCD is fine but higher resolution. OLED ideal.

And basically that’s the XS. But those colors are so nice. That bigger screen too.

I have an iPhone 8P for work and an XS Max for my personal. The 8 is snappy, but in terms of screen real estate and appearance, the 8 feels like a throwback to the 80's. No pun intended.

Last year I though the notch would bother me until I got up close and personal with a friends X for the first time a week before I got the Max.
I’ve had all series of iPhone and they all have some issues but so does every phone.

I don’t miss the bezels and I’m enjoying the extra screen even with the notch.

Whoever has the XS or Max enjoy the latest iPhone because it will only be the latest for a year. Then we start the debate all over again. A debate that’s been going on for 11 years.

I’m just not the type where I have to convince myself that my phone is better than yours.

I don’t race iPhones to compare boot time, screen brightness, screen tint etc. because it’s all relative. I have no idea how fast a 8 Plus will do whatever compared to a XS. It just doesn’t matter to me.

Excellent point. I don't mind trading no headphone jack for water residence though.

Don't listen to that apple propaganda. They could've put in a headphone jack and still have water resistance. They just removed it to save space for that massive 3100 mAh battery :p

Nope.

Just a stupid, fugly camera bump.

Go get your fugly on!

The X phones have bumps, too, so kind of a wash there...

I like my iP10, didn't upgrade to the S this time around. Had an 8+ as well, and did love the phone, but the thing was too big, (Same reason why I am not going for the Max)
