It doesn’t look like they added any mounting feature, so you could screw it to your bike or similar. At least some holes to strap it onto something would have been useful.
I assume the tracking is more important than hearing the beep.Pretty cool idea. I have a few in waterproof cases that go on a keychain. In the case you get about 50% of the sound you get out of the case. I wonder, with this being even thicker, would you hear it beep.
That may be true of lithium, which explodes instead of leaking per news reports, but the company doesn't stand behind their product either way. Never had a problem with Duracell. lots of problems with Energizer. Not so with the more expensive lithium version they offer. Btw, that would be Duracell that loves to leak.
Non-rechargeable lithium metal batteries have a much lower self-discharge rate than rechargeable lithium-ion/-polymer batteries. So you'd have to charge rechargeable Airtags much more often than you have to change the button cells in the current model.am I dense or why do these use replaceable batteries anyway? would be much more convenient to just wireless charge them for example. No need to open them up, which is getting harder and harder with how they age.
It’s annoying having to screw open the hidden compartment with the AirTag on my bike every year using special screwdriver bits and being located in a hard-to-access position, so I would appreciate something like that.Or one could just change the regular battery once every year.
Harder? I’ve replaced the battery in my AirTags three times so far, and each time they opened quite easily. If changing your AirTag battery is difficult, you may want to review your battery removal steps.am I dense or why do these use replaceable batteries anyway? would be much more convenient to just wireless charge them for example. Normally only if you don’t use them, which wouldn’t be the case here.AA batteries sometimes leak out after a very extended period
...except those batteries won't last a decade. That's actually a really great idea!! 👏
The beeping will probably be somewhat muffled, if you’re using it on an item you want to find.I think if they are sealed up that tight, It probably wouldn't cause problems
Rechargeable batteries degrade with time. You’d have to charge them ever more frequently, or buy new ones, or send them in to have the battery replaced (not cost effective). The fact that AirTags have easily replaceable batteries and thus can last “forever” as a device is what I like about them.am I dense or why do these use replaceable batteries anyway? would be much more convenient to just wireless charge them for example. No need to open them up, which is getting harder and harder with how they age.
I think the AirTag's already impressive battery life already resolves most of the issues you explained. While longer battery life is great, its already much better than the usecase you're discussing. This might actually disrupt the asset tracking market, because usually you pay $50 for the tracker that is rectangular like that, and then its $20/month for a data plan to use it, and its through a clunky 2000's era web portal UI, and the battery life is usually in weeks, not years.
Only issue of course, is airtags are inherently useless for asset tracking because it beeps loudly when it doesnt see your phone for more than 3 days. For professional use (delivery vans, equipment rental, etc) it won't work

I’d rather be able to just pop a new battery in there than have to rely on a likely non-user-replaceable-by-design rechargeable, making them even more disposable than they already are.
Never seen a lithium battery leakNot with Energizer batteries. They leak and the warranty is garbage.
That's cool, but lets just charge the next AirTag on an Apple Watch charger

You had unused Energizer lithium batteries drain in a few years?...except those batteries won't last a decade.
I had a crapton of those Energizers left over from a failed toy startup that I consulted for and they faded in a matter of a few years - and that's just sitting around.
Isn't the point of Airtags that it's small and easy to attach to keyrings, luggage, and the like?
Why would you need to add an enormous case like that? I can only see a few uses where it would be perhaps a good idea. One would be for vehicle tracking
That’s true (though e-bikes in principle generally have the space), but it also won’t look as obviously like an AirTag holder as others usually do. It would still fit comfortably under the saddle.I can’t imagine something this large will fit in many hidden compartments.
It's a great idea but you should be aware that AA batteries discharge over time so 14x is probably not realistic. I assume they will last approx. 3-5 years max
