Are there people out there who feel taking 30 seconds to change the battery once a year is too much of an inconvenience?

I assume the tracking is more important than hearing the beep.
The tags are still loud enough, I bought one of those briefcase style type cases for my DJI drone and put an AirTag deep into the foam underneath. Even through very thick foam and a solid plastic shell, the beep is pretty loud and clear.

It's a bargain for $20 to gain a few extra years of battery life without any maintenance, will it last 10yrs on those batteries?, I highly doubt it, but even 5yrs would be nice.

Great idea, I like it. Although changing Aritag batteries once or twice a year is fine with me but preparation is always a pain - getting the right battery, open the case, replace it, throw out the old one....

am I dense or why do these use replaceable batteries anyway? would be much more convenient to just wireless charge them for example. No need to open them up, which is getting harder and harder with how they age.
1. Rechargeable lithium Batteries are (in many countries) not allowed in Check-in luggage.
2. Added bulk and complexity.

Isn't the point of Airtags that it's small and easy to attach to keyrings, luggage, and the like?

Why would you need to add an enormous case like that? I can only see a few uses where it would be perhaps a good idea. One would be for vehicle tracking.
This would be ideal for something like a guitar case…

I would have loved this for my car and motorcycle, but I travel at least one week per month. if the AirTag is going to start beeping every time I'm out of range with my phone for three days, that's probably a deal breaker for me. Does anyone know if you can deactivate/configure that functionality on the AirTag?

You had unused Energizer lithium batteries drain in a few years?
Yeah. I just looked back and 2016-17 is when we picked up hundreds of these Energizer Lithiums direct from a commercial battery supplier. I inherited a lot of them and yeah, I finally definitively noticed that while I was trying to use'em in an old bridge camera about 2 years ago they just didn't hold up at all.

Prior to that I was using them for pretty much everything and because I had so many of them, I wasn't worrying about how many of them I was having to replace - but in hindsight, beyond 2020-ish and maybe even a tad before, I was throwing away and replacing a lot.

Plenty of use cases. Perhaps the most popular would be tracking in equipment shipping cases, such as those heavy duty Pelican cases used to protect and haul camera equipment. Another thought off the top of my head would be in power tool cases. It feels like once a month or so I see a local facebook post about some contractor who had his work tools stolen from the back of his pickup truck. This could be very helpful.

I really like this idea. Don't really care about the extended battery life. For me it's more about disguising the AirTag so a thief doesn't find it (unless they become well known). Just disable the speaker, and you're good.

You cannot disguise it! Why do people think you can? When the thief becomes aware of an AirTag in their immediate location (which they will), they will simply locate it with their phone and dispose of it. I know, my car was stolen!

The AirTag is for lost items, not stolen items. Get a tracker if you want to track your item if stolen.

$50 Price point for an Apple Air tag with this kind of battery life, rugged magnetic case, and using the Find My Network and my company would place an order for 2,500 units with just year 1 budget money. The use would be a rural/remote stationary equipment setting(Oil/gas field tanks, electronics, etc), but hidden to the best of the our ability in the equipment. Would need to be in a commercial setting possibly with Apple where you could turn the warnings off to others. And Apple would have to focus on commercial to lift their limit on AirTags, and 16 may be the new number? At one time I think it was 12, but has been raised.

Solutions are 100x the cost now with residual billing for some kind of overpriced cellular service.

You answered to your own question. That's the point.

Thanks. I have some sitting around that I'll keep a closer eye on before trying to use them.

It only beeps when it's moved after being out of range of your phone for 3 days. So if it's just sitting at home nothing happens.
