I normally watch YouTube and NetFlix on my 4K Samsung TV, but it would be crazy if my $4000 laptop cannot display HDR videos.
That's never been at issue. You could watch HDR in Youtube on your machine all along. Just required using a special browser feature (Windows agent) to do it in Safari.

Actually until a few weeks ago you could watch HDR YouTube videos on Safari without having to go into Developer mode and changing agents to Google Chrome - Windows.

Right, and we never lost the ability to watch them in HDR, only had to use a simple workaround.

What about Disney+? Could anyone ever see content in HDR on their MacBook using that service using Safari or other browsers?

Upon right-clicking on Youtube for their 'nerd stats', I became aware I was only receiving Rec. 709 (SDR). Even though some Youtube videos were identifying as HDR in the bottom right with the selected resolution, image wasn't HDR (confirmed by the stats/colour space).

Having read through this thread, I went into Youtube stats, and selected "Always prefer AV1". I was now able to receive a Rec.2020 stream (confirmed by stats).

The problem? My machine then hard reset twice in a row. Each time caused by watching HDR content, or having HDR content in the background. Not impressed!

I don’t think Apple hardware accelerates AV1, so I think it will use a lot of resource than VP9.

They don't. That's why I don't recommend using it. I myself use an extension on chrome to disable AV1 so it only uses h264 or VP8/9 .

And @Jazmodo , the crashing thing should be fixed in the next stable update on 12.1 which is very near. Considering that it's already on RC channel. They has confirmed that it's fixed on the notes. After it's released google can then enable it back again for apple devices

YouTube still has to unblock on their side for this to be complete.

They just did, right now. I was surprised all the sudden the HDR is back and super bright video.

Yeah it is back. On chrome too (i never changed the user agent). I havent updated to 12.1 but I think since YouTube fingerprints what we use using the browser agent. It seems like it's enabled again now
