Yeah some user's browser still say that but it's not really HDR. If the stats for nerds say bt709. That means it's SDR. bt2020 and it's HDR. Currently my chrome show only 4k without HDR tag. And it's bt709 not bt2020 like it was when it's working

One thing I noticed on this video:

If I select 4K & HDR, it uses vp09 + bt709.
If I select 8K & HDR, it uses av01 + smpte2084 / bt2020

This happens on other videos as well, where the color changes on 8K but not all 4K HDR videos.

**EDIT** Fixed it by going to youtube.com/testtube and selecting 'Always prefer AV1' on Chrome.

We're dealing with Safari here, we know Chrome works.
This is in response to the people above discussing whether or not HDR even works in Chrome. For some users, if they don't select the appropriate AV1 option, they won't see HDR content there either, even if they have the option in the video dropdown.

On @Rodney_Rooster 's post. It shows that it's running on his chrome with VP9. So it's weird I think..

Been trying some videos via Chrome and HDR and notice that once HDR brightness kicks in the display dims. Is there a reason for this? Doesn't happen on my iPad Pro

Yes but it won't be hw accelerated. It will increase power usage since it's using software decoding and it will add the cpu usage. Also it might drop more frames.

That's why knowing that I disabled AV1 and just use VP9. I'm fine with videos not having 8k option (since YouTube is moving 8k to AV1) as long as I'm sure that the video I'm watching can be 4k 60fps HDR with hw acceleration.

Well the HDR part is disabled right now by YouTube. Assuming it's because of the crashing etc . But again people has said that it works if you change your user agent to chrome on windows. So yeah that is the better way I think since it keeps vp9 hw acceleration with HDR (as a current workaround)

Use Safari. Develop mode there can allow for VP9 battery or cord

I am having this issue in Safari as well...I have been playing HDR contents in Safari with no issues before...,so I suppose it's YT's problem?

maybe M1Max with Monterey, as my Mac Pro with Monterey still works for YT HDR Play in Safari.

But vp9 is always hw accelerated. So it doesn't matter. What matters is using AV1 only when you're on ac power. I think safari only enables or disables vp9
Any response from Apple getting YouTube HDR to work on MBP m1max using browsers?

Hi All

On my 14" MacBook Pro I have been playing HDR 4K YouTube videos fine however now they won't play in HDR anymore.

Is anybody else having this issue?

Thanks
I have the same issue, Safari was playing HDR few days back, but not anymore.HDR works on chrome but it doesn't get the peak brightness like safari.
Can someone help me fix this issue, urgent help required!

Interesting. I played multiple HDR videos in safari when it was available in the beginning of november before Google disabled it. Today I tried it in Chrome and my MBP 16 have rebooted on the first video I watched.

I just got a kernel panic when watching 4K HDR in Chrome using the M1 Max MacBook Pro. Basically if you quickly go down to the comments section you might get it.
