HDR was fine the other day, no reboot or update on the mac. Just YouTube decides not to load HDR anymore on Safari. I think Google has the control at the point and you can always switch the agent but that is just annoying.

Fairly sure this is because of the bug that causes kernel panic from YouTube hdr (theres another post about this). Probably google has this in place until Apple fixes this bug.

I still can't believe this hasn't been discussed anywhere besides here. I have yet to see this discussed in any review or even mentioned by any youtuber.

Would love to have some updates on this.
Sure! We haven't heard back from Google/YouTube. As for Apple's side, a number of HDR issues are patched in the upcoming macOS update, currently in beta. Tough for users until the update drops, but nothing more to share right now. Will keep you in the loop if that changes.

Must surely be because of the hard crashes this was inducing. Not much YouTube can do about a bug in MacOS, so they have just disabled it.

4K HDR YouTube is still working brilliantly on my Razer Blade 4K OLED. It must be an Apple thing. ?

4k HDR only works in Brave for me for my 14 inch.

In fact Brave is the only browser I use that supports ProMotion (120hz).

I don't use Chrome btw.

You don’t get a Mac to watch YouTube or play games. Not sure why this is an issue.
Why not? I mean people have gamed for years on intel macs and streamed millions of hours on youtube. Now all of sudden they can't or shouldn't. As my daughter would say, "ok boomer" :) in all seriousness what you use it for and others will is completely different.

Fix: Enable developer mode in preferences, then go to Develop menu, User Agent, select Firefox/Windows, reload safari

Please note that this was disabled on purpose to prevent crashes on Macs while it is investigated. I have not crashed once watching HDR on my 14" m1 max.

google and youtube always be adding friction to apple products ? disabling HDR is this latest attempt to push people to use chrome. just as youtube works hard to disable PiP in phone safari.

It's disabled in chrome too.. i think it's because of the HDR issue with the new MBPs. They'll prob turn it on again when it's all fixed
