To complicate things further, check out this video on Safari and Chrome

On Safari it says 709 but DOES appear to be HDR.

Looks HDRish but can't do true HDR in 709. It's converted footage that keeps most of the quality to the naked eye.

Another way to tell if the HDR is on, it's to dim 45-50% screen brightness on your XDR monitor and the scene should be brighter than your white background.

M1 Max here - HDR definitely has been disabled on the YouTube side. Changing the User Agent to Edge or Chrome restores HDR, but running as Safari will only show 4K non-HDR.

Confirmed that HDR is gone from Safari but it's working fine on Chrome.
Youtube app on iPad and iPhone are fine displaying HDR content.

Apple / Youtube - what are you doing? This absolutely sucks.

It just works though. Fix the crashes. What a crap show though. Can’t watch hdr in safari. Can’t get 120hz. If only apple made safari along with the hardware and had months before saying good to go. Oh wait.

Pretty soon we’ll those saying you don’t buy a Mac to watch hdr videos. Or play games. It’s the devs fault. Lol.

YouTube or Apple have most likely disabled HDR until Apple fixes the crash when scrolling down the comments.

Sounds like they’re working on it. How about a message saying as much? Instead users can go figure all this out instead. Crack pr team at work.

You can still watch HDR on Safari by changing the agent to Chrome (Windows). I think it's because of the mass crashing HDR lately.

YouTube could possibly not be ready for HDR for mac and it may be a long wait.

Can confirm. On my chrome Costa Rica now only says 4K. No HDR. and on the stats for nerds it's also obvious. Though it still looks awesome ?. Not a deal breaker for me tbh since i rarely see HDR in YouTube. Only when I want to show how amazing the screen is to somebody ?
Chrome settings show HDR for me.

Really? Working on chrome? I'm on the new 2021 MBPs and with chrome I don't have the HDR option anymore. Just 4k. At least in Costa Rica. I have disabled av1 tho . Just vp9. Is your HDR video running in vp9 or AV1?
Chrome 4K HDR is showing.

Is anyone else not getting HDR-enabled content for Disney Plus or Prime Video either? I've tried on Chrome and Safari, the latter of which trying different user agents too,

Macs have been supporting YouTube 4K HDR and Dolby Vision since Big Sur (2020).

This is a MacOS Monterey thing.
Partially its a Google server issue. Thats happened before. Using this example

I see this running in the IPadOS app under iPadOS 15.2 beta 2 with HDR. However in Safari it was running HDR part of the day yesterday, but then it went to just SDR. Using Safari under 12.0 and 12.1 Beta 2, both Macs show SDR currently. :)

I just discovered that in order to playback HDR content on the new MacBook Pros with M1 Pro/Max you need to have the power adapter plugged into the laptop. Yep. And it doesn't matter what your Battery settings are.

Here's a simple test. With your MacBook Pro plugged into power, open an HDR YouTube video in Safari. Then set your User Agent to something that plays HDR like "Chrome - Windows". Play the video and note the HDR status icon shows HDR and the highlights are HDR bright. Now stop the video, unplug the power adapter and refresh the browser. Your video will start playing again, but now in SDR. Wow.

I tested on chrome with power connected. With the settings to turn on HDR on both power and batt. And it just doesn't show HDR now. It was a few days ago. So yeah

You might wanna keep digging till you discover something else. I just unplugged and then changed the User agent to Chrome/Windows and it plays HDR just fine. These machines are capable of high performance regardless of whether they're plugged in and never throttle. Do you think they wouldn't be able to handle mere HDR on battery? And Apple didn't definitely disable HDR on battery.

In this case it's a Monterey thing. If your browser user-agent shows as MacOS/Safari, YouTube is disabling HDR. If your browser lies about not being MacOS/Safari (e.g. Chrome or Edge) it displays HDR. It's as simple as that.

HDR still works unplugged with the Firefox - Windows agent for me after restarting the browser.
