Confirmed that HDR is gone from Safari but it's working fine on Chrome.
Youtube app on iPad and iPhone are fine displaying HDR content.

Apple / Youtube - what are you doing? This absolutely sucks.

Really? Working on chrome? I'm on the new 2021 MBPs and with chrome I don't have the HDR option anymore. Just 4k. At least in Costa Rica. I have disabled av1 tho . Just vp9. Is your HDR video running in vp9 or AV1?

I swear I just watched in HDR before but after I restarted Chrome again and loaded the video again (after seeing your message)... although the video quality selection says HDR but it's no longer in HDR now. I'm comparing it side by side with the 2021 12.9-inch iPad Pro and the iPad Pro is obviously in HDR over 1000nits while the Mac is definitely not. Damn it.

Would @arn and team please look into it and ask Apple or Youtube for comments?

Yep. For me it's not a deal breaker until it's fixed. But yeh kinda sucks when you want to check for HDR quality ?

This is the stat for nerds on iPad YouTube app for the same video. Clearly it’s displaying HDR content but the MacBook Pro is not.

I thought Youtube HDR was working for me on Chrome, but not Safari. I tried Vimeo HDR videos as well on both Chrome and Safari. Try this Vimeo video for reference, there is also a non-HDR version for testing.

Not sure what is going on tbh. I'll check Apple TV app to see if there is native HDR content I can compare with.
EDIT: It's definitely working in the Apple TV app with SEE.

Despite HDR is shown on Chrome, I’m not sure why the brightness is much lower than that of the iPad Pro. So I think it’s still in SDR. On the iPad Pro, the video is obviously much brighter than other parts of the screen if you watch it not in full screen, or in Picture in Picture mode. The brightness is like blinding your eyes.

I pointed out the other day that YouTube's use of the codec was causing instability on some machines.

It looks like they disabled HDR until they fix it.

It has nothing to do with Apple. YouTube has the ability to turn off features. They did this with PIP on iPhone Safari too.

PIP was gone for months.

On your Safari turn on Developer mode and switch agent: HDR is back and working - I have no idea why Google disabled this.

Hey. We’ve gone ahead and asked YouTube and Apple for comments on the situation. Thanks.

To complicate things further, check out this video on Safari and Chrome

Using Chrome I can see Bt2020 in nerd stats but the footage is clearly not HDR. It looks quite flat similar to Log.
On Safari it says 709 but DOES appear to be HDR.

If I download that clip, I can see in VLC that it is in fact 2020 and displays exactly like in Safari.

Don't use Safari. I use Firefox most of the time. Love it. Use Safari off and on, but Firefox is my default browser.
what are the advantages of Firefox over Chrome/Safari if you don't mind me asking? I used to be heavy into Firefox with my MBP back in 2011 then as I was required to transition to windows for work they started to require Chrome so haven't been back to Firefox since

Firefox is a fine browser but I use it on my Windows only. Firefox is still lacking Media codec supports, like can someone confirm if AV1 get supported in Firefox?
