Does this happen if you use the ‘Download Latest YouTube-dl’ feature and try again?

Oopsie doodles. I thought I had tried the download latest option but I just tried it again and it works now. Sorry for the trouble.

Over that last two years, I essentially used my powerbook as a terminal to my linux box. Your PPCMC app and your release of Links2 have made my powerbook into a stand alone system again. Thank you!

With all the magical stuff you recompiled to get Links2 working, do you think netsurf could be compiled to run on Tiger?

Thanks, that’s what I was going for. About netsurf not sure but it probably is possible. I do think you’d be better off using links2 in graphics mode because it will essentially give you the same experience. There would be no JavaScript support if netsurf were to work.

There was a PowerPC OS X build of netsurf, (off the top of my head it stopped about version 2.5) back in the day, I used it once or twice and the experience was pretty crashtastic and bad...but then again this was in the early days of tenfourfox and leopard webkit and I was spoiled and looking for a perfect web experience on OS X. I've used 3.9 on Linux recently and they've made a lot of improvements, there are also youtube videos of people using it to watch videos, Dronecatcher style, with a standalone player on RISC OS. I even recall there were even ways to do that with Links 2, finding the video link and handing it off to VLC or mplayer, but I haven't done or seen it done in ages.

Hello alex_free,
I just wanted to say thank you for the phenomenal application, it has really improved the practicality of my older Macs. I've tested it so far on my iMac G5 Late 2005 and on my 2005 PowerBooks G4 (12", 15" Low-Res, 15" Hi-Res). It works like a charm on all of these. Your application made watching YouTube on these older machines a piece of cake again and for that I'm very thankful.

I do have some questions. Do you think PPCMC could be compiled for later OS X versions as well (Intel ones that lack Rosetta)? For example I have a Late 2006 iMac (top notch model with a 2.33 GHz Core 2 Duo) running unsupported Mavericks. It struggles with playing 720p videos flawlessly and I think with your application (esentially downloading the video and playing it through QuickTime or VLC) it could easily handle HD playback. BTW Is there a way to play/stream the a video in VLC rather than Quicktime (I think VLC could improve playback from my experience in the past but I could be wrong). Thanks again for the great contribution and keeping our old PowerPCMacs usable! :)

I could make a 64 bit Intel release that works from 10.5 to the latest Mac OS, but you’d have to test it as I don’t own an Intel Mac!

As for VLC, I really need to look into it. An update for PPCMC is coming soon, will you be able to test the Intel build later today?

As for the app, I think it’s great all us power pc users are on the same page, thanks for trying it out.

Your iMac has more than enough grunt to play 720P - have you tried all the other ways - YewTube from @wicknix plays 720P no problem?

Me and the original developer of PPCMC chat on the garden sometimes, and he recently told me PPCMC works flawlessly while some other Linux/Windows solutions had problems downloading a certain video. I do think there is a need for a nice YouTube downloader on 10.7+. But I would expect that Mac to play 720p.

No worries at all! I played some more with the various people who were on. There were four other people! I think I'm getting better xD

I can’t believe other people are on now. They have to all be PPC users as I believe the OS 9 version is outdated and won’t connect to newer servers? Not 100% on that but how interesting.

I think that's the oddity with Youtube and API changes - alas, PPCMC is not immune either - it was having the same problem yesterday as with something I was working on:

Strange, the video couldn’t be downloaded in any way? This was with the latest YouTube-dl I assume.

Im kind of at the mercy of the YouTube-dl developers, this kind of thing isn’t technically a PPCMC issue.

Awesome! Yes of course I could test your Intel build, the 2006 iMac is currently in its box, I'd just have to take it out and I'll be ready to test your build.

The iMac can play 1080p in VLC no problem but when I try to watch YouTube in Firefox the playback doesn't feel smooth (the video hangs at times, is out of sync and drops frames). I haven't tried any other options besides playing the video directly within the browser.

What about other browsers? I have 8 on Snow Leopard - there'll be even more on Mavericks.

True, I'll try it in Safari but it is kind of outdated (from 2016, I think). I could also try Elmedia Player (a video player that can handle Youtube-URLs). Nevertheless, alex_free's application would be great for older OS X since it is free and open source :) Also the youtube-dl plugin can be updated easily (I hope youtube-dl will be around for many years to come)

Safari works fine on my Mac Pro 1,1 for Youtube. All the workarounds are great but I feel they're not really needed on Intel machines as all browsers do the job, for myself I have a script in the dock I can click on after copying any Youtube url and the video is downloaded.
I suspect your issue with Firefox is because of the unoffially supported Mavericks install.

Yeah, I was surprised too. I don't know for sure. I asked everyone what systems they were using, but no one responded.
