On the 12.9 (and 11 I believe as well), an app that isn't updated for 12.1 and to take the home indicator (small bar for swiping at the bottom) into account, it'll end up with the app just slightly shrunken and a thin black bar on all 4 sides (mainly to house the home indicator on the bottom and the status bar on the top).

Do you think can you post a screenshot of any such APP ??

I spent an hour at the store playing with the 11" and 12.9" trying to decide.

The 12.9 screen is awesome, you can see more lines on text on websites and the font is larger despite the extra text so that was great.

The 11" felt much more portable, particularly for using on your lap or on a airplane tray. The 12.9" was not only more awkward due to it's size, but also need more elbow room to move around the larger screen.

It was a hard choice because I liked both a lot but settled on the 11" because most of my reading at home is done on a large monitor so I figured it was more important for the iPad to be 'more' portable.

They are both awesome so you should be happy with either.

What I'm not pleased about is the typing angle on the new keyboard cover is steeper than before.
I wanted it less steep, not more so when typing on a desk I'm looking down at the iPad for an even more awkward angle and using the touch screen at a steeper angle isn't great either. Wish they kept the old shallower angle.

Does anyone know if a simple adjustable wedge on amazon for better positioning the ipad?.. although then the keyboard will be on a reverse angle.

I’ve gone back and forth with this and put the 12.9 in my bag in the Apple Store apps more times that I can count. Initially, I went with the 11” because I travel a lot and like the idea of portability. And, I currently rock a 9.7 pro, so the 11 should be a noticeable increase is screen size for me. Even with the reduced bezels, the 12.9 still looks huge to me, at least in all the reviews and unboxing videos I’ve been watching as I wait to go pick up my 11.

I’ll check out the 12.9 when I go pick up my 11 this afternoon, but, right now, I’m thinking I made the right decision - especially considering that I will be lugging this thing around with the keyboard folio in the same backpack that houses my work laptop.

But, that could all change when I get the chance to man-handle the 12.9!

Who’s had the chance to kick the tires on both and come out of that with the 11 vs. the 12.9?

I would highly suggest you guys play with them if possible before pulling the trigger. I was almost 100% sure I was going to go with the 11" since I rarely use my current 12.9" because it's too big. After using both at the store today, I'm 100% sure I want the 12.9". the 11" felt tiny in my hands, I would've hated it.

I'd say of course the 11 looks smaller, it's a lot smaller overall. There is no way around that. The decision comes down to how you use your iPad, do you like it at a desk primarily? Go with the 12.9. Do you take it on the go a lot? Do you prefer couch/bed use? Probably the 11 inch is best. They are both capable and can definitely be used in either scenario, but that's how I think of it when it comes to an early decision.
this is my issue, I use it in both case scenarios!! I have the 12.9 ready for pickup in about an hour and the 11 on my porch when I get home ... although I prefer not to open one of them ... so I will play at the apple store before picking up my iPad.

So guys if someone like the 10.5" iPad Pro of 2017 do you think the 11" iPad April looks even smaller than that?

So do I, but I ultimately need my iPad to be mobile. I use it around the office a lot and I like it at home at night for couch/bed use. I think the 11 inch is the best compromise of both. The 12.9 is still too big for both.

So guys if someone like the 10.5" iPad Pro of 2017 do you think the 11" iPad April looks even smaller than that?

I have the 10.5" and 11" sitting side by side on my desk.
Physically identical in size but the 11" looks larger because the display is wider.

When doing a 75% / 25% split screen with Discord / iMessage both apps depending on word length fit on average 1 extra word per row.

Both 11" and 12.9" have their advantages and even after choosing the 11" after an hour of playing with both at the store I still kinda want both.

I would say if you use it as your primary computing device, the 12.9" is the way to go.

If you still do most of your work at home on a larger laptop screen or a monitor, then the 11" is much nicer for portability.
I use the iPad constantly at home but when I'm reading a lot I always use the 27" monitor not only because it's larger but because I look at the monitor straight vs looking down at the iPad so ergonomically it's nicer.

Now I'm looking forward to developers updating their apps for the 11" aspect ratio, most games currently look smaller on the 11 than the 10.5 until they update.

Man, this is crazy difficult. I was at the store for almost an hour playing with them and I still couldn’t decide. Both definitely have their advantages. Walked away with both but only want to open one..

Man, I am the most indecisive person on the planet. Was totally convinced to go with the 11” as soon as it was announced. Now, with too much time on my hands, I start playing around a sheets of paper to get a feel for the size and, dagnabbit, I end up canceling my 11” order and put the 12.9” back into my shopping bag. It looks like the 12.9 will fit nicely in my backpack.

So, later today, I’ll be grabbing the 12.9 and keyboard folio - I’m that weak.

I got the 11” today bu will go to the store tomorrow to check out the 12.9 as well.
I’m worried that I’m gonna love the bigger one, as I had a first gen 12.9 and loved the screen but hated the portability.

But here’s the thing, I have zero doubts that the current 12.9 is much more portable, even easy to handle...AS LONG AS ITS WITHOUT THE FOLIO!
I already dislike the 11 with its folio attached in one handed use, while this was never an issue on the 10.5”... they did something to the design of the keyboard that makes it feel much more clumsy, and the huuuuge keyboard was also too much for me on the 1st generation, couldn’t use it, so I always just had the iPad naked, but came to really love it on the 10.5”, improves productivity so much.

One other thing that somebody mentioned: airplane tray tables! I was just on a flight from the US one to Europe yesterday and observed how it felt using the 10.5” on that table and it was just perfect. Had it been two centimeters wider, I would’ve had to move it uncomfortably close towards me.

After all it’s really a big dilemma. I wish I could dump my 13” MBP, if only iOS was more capable. In that case i would go with the 12.9 immediately. But since for REAL work i still always need to carry the MacBook along on longer 10+ days journeys, i think it’s too much, the big iPad and the big MacBook.
I assume I’m gonna stick with the small one just out of necessity.

Damn - saw some during the hands on reviews. I haven't purchased yet so can't do any screenshots. I'll post if I come across one.

This is my sentiment as well. They're both incredible devices and both feel amazing to hold. From all the reviews and hands on everyone kept saying how much lighter they felt (especially the 12.9") but when I held them in store I was still shocked by how nice they were.

So guys if someone like the 10.5" iPad Pro of 2017 do you think the 11" iPad April looks even smaller than that?

If you're someone who likes and really enjoys the size of the 10.5 then I'd say you'll love the 11".

I'm extremely indecisive as well - totally get what you guys are saying. I've bounced back and forth between iPhone sizes and iPad sizes many times, lol. Not to mention on colours... This time I'm pretty certain on 12.9 though.

I'm pretty disappointed by the folio as well. Even after seeing it in person. I LOVED using Smart Covers and the Apple Smart Keyboard (cover) on all previous iPads. It always just felt like a cover that held on by the edge and very quick to remove. The folio feels much more awkward for that kind of use.

One other thing that somebody mentioned: airplane tray tables! I was just on a flight from the US one to Europe yesterday and observed how it felt using the 10.5” on that table and it was just perfect. Had it been two centimeters wider, I would’ve had to move it uncomfortably close towards me.

I've seen this mentioned about airplane tray tables but I've never had an issue. In the past when I had a 9.7" Pro it would barely take 3/4 of the tray table, and many times I've flown with the 2017 12.9" and it sat comfortably on the tray table as well. In general iPads do well on tray tables as with how they sit on the keyboard cover it doesn't cover as much space as say a laptop that is opened up.

I have both once you use 12.9 11 starts to look small, like having the max and then looking at a xs, also the aspect ratio is better on 12.9

Spent an hour at apple store. 12.9 is much lighter but definitely not light enough to be portable. The 12.9 feels like a laptop when you have the folio case on.

Ended up getting 11 inch because the whole reason I have an iPad is to be portable. I bring it everywhere.

I was decided on the 11" (delivers here any moment) and then I found this darn thread, while trying to kill some time. Now i'm second guessing my whole decision. Darn you people!

I'll go to the store to check out the 12.9, but as is the case with the iPhone, I suspect i'll prefer the smaller screen device. Portability tends to win over screen size for me.

Just came out of the Apple store. The screen on the 12.9 is good however it is just too big and bulky. Holding the 12.9 with one hand is not practical. Not good for reading.

I can confirm what others have already said before. If you are replacing your computer and will be using the iPad as the only computer, then 12.9 is great. However if you already have a computer, and plan to use the iPad for reading, notetaking, and taking it with you, then 11 is excellent.

I returned my 12.9 order without opening it. Looking forward to enjoying the 11 inch iPad

I’ll update this thread tonight after I get my 12.9 (and play with the 11 at the store). I think I’m going to appreciate the extra screen and keyboard real estate. But, that 11 looks to be so portable.....

I do have the 11 inch sitting at home, so I’ll give the 12.9 some attention tonight and get a feel for it, then compare it to the 11 and decide tomorrow which to keep.

Such pressing issues to deal with, I know.

Recently sold my 12.9' first gen and ordered the 11' the day of the pre-order. I was looking forward to getting a smaller and more portable device. Went to the store, compared the two sizes, and the new 12.9 is just clearly the one for me. SO much smaller and manageable than the last gen. The 11' just felt tiny.

I returned the 11', but they didn't have the 12.9 model I wanted in stock. So will wait...

I'm coming from a 10.5 and was afraid the 12.9 would be too big. Now that I have it in my hands, I'd say it's the perfect size for me. I've got big hands though, I can imagine someone having small hands feeling uncomfortable holding it.

A bit off topic, comparing 10.5" to 11" sound, the 11" appears to have to have slightly richer/deeper sound stage.. a bit less tiny. The speakers appear to be larger.

If audio is important I would think the 12.9" with larger speakers will sound even better.

Color temperature on the 11" is a warmer than the 10.5", both set to True Tone.
