I'm reviewing Proton Pass. I currently have the upper tier proton plan, that includes this, since I'm paying for it, I might as well check it out.

Going to chatgpt, and asking it to list the similarities/differences of 1password, bitwarden and proton pass yielded some surprising results, though I shouldn't be surprised. They largely offer the same exact features, though proton pass includes email aliasing and it seems to be built into their app.

I'm not advocating for any of those, other than my planned departure (yes this is an airport 😛) of 1password.
I migrated from 1Password to Proton Pass about 1.5 ago. No regrets at all.
Reasons were that I had a subscription to Proton upper tier for the other services, so it was included, and the fact that it is open source.
It was still lacking features back then, now it is much more mature.
It’s cloud based, true, but I am using the additional password to, hopefully, harden the vaults even more. Sharing some vaults with family members works smoothly as well.
I have used the integrated email aliases much more than what I was expecting, it’s a nice feature.
Bottom line, quite happy. Not the only possible solution of course, but it works perfectly for me.

Looks like proton is discounting the proton pass price, definitely not a coincidence with 1PW raising it prices
My issue is, they are not telling the truth when comparing. 1Password can share individual items, and they have an emergency access now also.
1Password is also audited, but they put that with open source.

can you add custom fields and notes now?

Their audit was done in 2023 only, unlike 1PW and Bitwarden which are regular.

Yep, you can define custom fields, with the field name you want, as text, hidden text (like passwords), Totp or dates. Notes had always been there if I am not mistaken, but they are available now, both as element type and as field inside another element like a login. You can add attachments as well, useful for documents photos, for example, but any file type is possible.
Missing element types have been added as well, like WiFi passwords, ssh keys, bank accounts, passports, etc…

I'm trying out protonpass and comparing it against bitwarden.

One of the nice things it does, is that it adds an icon to the login fields, for you to click and it will fill in your credentials. I've been needing to click the bitwarden extension, then click fill in. Not a huge issue, but its less seamless and effecient. Also I have multiple vaults, and on importing to bitwarden, it just lumped everything together, not ideal, but PP it allowed multiple vaults

I still have a philosophical problem of using the same account password for ProtonPass, I just need to determine if its a show stopper.

About that icon...

Remember that their was a post about a click attack. Icons like that are vector for that attack. So you should check that Proton has protections in place for that. For 1Password I had it configured to always ask for confirmation before allowing a click on that icon to fill data. That icon could get a click and not even be visible - that was the click attack discussed.

That icon is provided by 1Password as well. I find it to be an obstacle at time and disable it. It can interfere with icons provided by the web page's developer. Also, sometimes the icon shows up on fields that shouldn't have been identified as related to credentials. The heuristics chosen by the browser extension count on hints from the page's developer.

LastPass offers this icon as well. Their particular implementation caused a bug in one of my apps that I had to work around. They actually caused awkward field resize events to accommodate their icon.

1- You can always have a different account for protonpass which is free to use but you will lose 2fa and email alias capability. paying for the account is kind of not worth it cause its $3 which is near 1PW so might as well not migrate or just go ahead for $10 for the full suite.

2-For Bitwarden, you can use shortcut cmd+shift+L to cycle through your logins in the fields. you can also right click the field and navigate to Bitwarden->autofill login

3-Multiple vaults is a major issue with Bitwarden. They made it difficult on purpose because they set it up as an organization tool so people have to pay for the "organizations" method. It is what it is.

4-correct, account password should not be shared for passwords account, i wonder if they have capability to split the 2. I heard something as such before but can not confirm

I don't see that as being feasible, I'm happy with my account, but making two accounts is counter productive imo.

Interesting, I did not know that. I like to see what I'm cycling through, but that does make things a bit easier when there's only one entry per url

There's a way to set a pin for protonpass, I still have to authenticate, I wonder if the pin will be used once the timeout for locking is exceeded. I'll have to wait and see on that.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with Proton Pass, I'll largely stick with it I believe its the best option given that I'm already paying proton for my email and vpn.

Just popping in here to say that ProtonPass is working very well. The transition from 1PW to PP is more seamless then switching to Bitwarden. No knock on BW, its just that I'm already paying for the proton products and this password manager has come a long way since I last checked it out

Is there anything you like better about Proton Pass?

Using my banking app (on my phone), I obviously need to sign in. With 1Password it doesn't recognize this app, I need to search for the bank name in 1PW and then select "one time" fill in - that is the next time I access my bank, I'll have to repeat the process

With PP, I can associate it with my bank, so all future usages will just automatically be filled in. Not a huge savings, but there's a higher level of efficiency.

Also, I can edit my settings within the extension, where as with 1PW, clicking the edit button brings you to the website - again not a huge deal, but when you're needing to quickly adjust something, is a nice convenience.

Is this just with your banking app, or with any app that requires you to sign in?

I had this same issue with my bank. I found the correct URL for the app and that fixed it.

you mean correct url for the bank website'? i do not understand how the app has a url
Yes, the URL for the app was slightly different than the website. Someone posted it on their help forum who had the same issue. Once I added that URL to 1Password the person posted, all worked great.

I still decided to give 1Password a chance due to many reasons provided that it is the most expensive with the recent price increase. I paid monthly via App Store first to confirm if it works well so that I can switch to yearly later.

Ridiculously my account is not unlocked after a 14-day trial with frozen period. I contacted support via email and Reddit. No replies from the former and got removed from the latter, with a reply from their moderator that they would reply as soon as they can.

It has been 8 hours after payment while I still can't use 1Password. It's unacceptable when they take my money, you can't get the product or service. And your request is even removed from the public.

I was thinking there can be a risk of using Apple Password due to one basket, being locked out and PIN code, but before the issue happens, ironically the most professional solution 1Password fails to help me. I am really disappointed!

Stop payment with your bank. That usually wakes up the right people at a company, if they care at all.

I have submitted a refund request to Apple and let's see.

They also violated the consumer protection law in my country, that the company fails to deliver services to consumers who paid for it, and no one explains on time to me what is currently happening and why it takes time.

The moderator on Reddit further explained to me:

"Just to clarify, your thread wasn't removed to silence you or ignore the issue. We can't troubleshoot account-specific issues like billing and frozen accounts over Reddit for security reasons, so our standard process is to make sure your support ticket is in the queue, or flag it with the team if it's been sitting for a while.

In this case, your ticket came in about two hours before you posted here saying you hadn't heard back from us. I checked on it, confirmed it's in the queue, and our team will follow up with you directly soon."

As of writing, after 4 hours of the message from the moderator above, I still can't hear from them whatever on email or X. How long will the "soon" be?

He thought that I better shut my mouth because I am impatient to follow up after I waited for two hours. Remember this is a password manager enhancing my security for the period customers pay for. If they can't deliver on time, my computer system can't be perfect as I expected as I can't import/create and let the company evaluate whether my passwords are at risk (e.g. Watchtower).

I understand there can be situations that the problem cannot be fixed immediately, so this is where the customer service plays the role to explain the real-time situation to explain to the customers. This is what they say they have 24/7 customer service, but you can see on social media they fail to do it, and even Bitwarden can do better than them.

Maybe you think I take the advantage of asking them for something like pro-rated refund, credit compensation or extended subscription period. As I said before it's a service covering the period I chose for, and they failed to protect me at least one day so far. They miss the prime time to let customers continue supporting them. They got my money, refusing to deliver the service they promised after getting my money.

And even removing customers' opposite voices and facts for their reputation. This is absolutely evil. Evil inside!!!

aren't you supposed to be able to use your account even without subscription? you just cant add or delete items? how did you get locked out?
