1password founder, Roustem, when asked about standalone vaults:
We've already reached the limits of what the standalone option can provide. We also struggled with the customer support because the number of things that could go wrong when configuring various sync options is pretty much infinite. At some point, we had over 10,000 unanswered tickets in our queue, our customers had to wait over 8 weeks just to get an answer — 90% of the issues were about standalone.

Because of that, we had people at the company, myself included, who wanted to drop support for standalone vaults in 1Password 7 released in 2018. [link]

Yowch.. it looks like what they are offering for those with standalone licenses is to trade in the license for a 50% discount off the first 3 years of a subscription, and then are trying to justify the move to subscription only with "most users using 1Password use the subscription service and don't have a problem with it".

That's horrible PR there, because that implies that they only are caring about most 1Password users, instead of caring about all of them. That entire page is not a good look.

From my experience with standalone vs 1Password subscriptions, my father in law, mom, and everyone in my family plan can set up a new device without an issue and no help from me. Back when it was syncing vaults with dropbox or other ways, I always had to set up a new device for them.

Ihave not read all 27 pages of this thread and thus may be repeating something said by others. I have been using Wallet from Acrylic Software. There are barely any updates but they keep it working with whichever is the latest IOS/MacOS. They only charge once, and your database will sync between devices. Its simple and uncomplicated, and I have been a fan for quite a few years. To get sync, you need to store the database in Dropbox, or use WeDAV or sync ovr local wifi. I use Dropbox, its never been a problem. Available on the App stores.

I don’t remember if anyone posted that or not, but it looks nice. Unfortunately not cross platform, but if you are only in the Apple ecosystem it might be worth a look.

I previously commented in this thread about the challenges of getting your data exported out of 1Password and imported into your new password manager.

Turns out Strongbox has just released a specially crafted importer for IPassword. Available on Strongbox version 1.16.2 on MacOS

As they say, "1Password has not made it an easy task for other developers to import their vaults. The format of their export files can only be described as a frustrating and chaotic mess"

But this should make it much easier see Strongbox welcomes 1Password refugees

btw I have zero relationship with any password management company other than as a customer. And in the case of 1Password a disgruntled ex-customer.

My problem is they are using it as an excuse to cancel license. Have they said most our users use subscription and we do not want to put the effort in support local vaults (although I doubt it takes any extra effort) would be more honest.

I have to agree that seamless working products is better for most people, most people do not know how it works they just want it to work.

Sometimes this is not in their best of interest, like people backup their chat history in Whatsapp and can easily get them back on a new device and think this is a cool convenience. Not in their best interest: Chat history is stored in FB's servers unencrypted.

That being said I have no problem making subscription the default and allow local vaults for those who want it, but they do not want to do that.

I stumbled upon it but there is no reason for me to choose a product that is a side project than other developers that take it more seriously like StrongBox, BitWarden, and EnPass. Honestly I thought it was deprecated.

i had no problem importing from 1password in KeePassCX, EnPass, or Codebook although the messing of the data seemed more on the importing app not 1password that being said I am glad the defaming is spreading, from StrongBox site:

We have received much correspondence over the last month or so from some very anxious 1Password users. The news that 1Password is dropping support for local only vaults as well as their decision to go with an Electron based UI has alienated former fans. Fortunately, here at Strongbox, we have no such plans to go with Electron and control over your vaults (we call them “databases”) is kind of our thing. We believe you should own your most important secrets and that not everything needs to be stored or managed in the cloud.

I was looking because I always want a back up. This app is for iOS and macOS? Hard pass.

If AgileBits had their druthers, since they still have the functionality in 1Password 7, they should honor the functionality built into it and turn back on their license servers and leave them running until they release 1Password 8, then disable it, if not sunset them when they EOL 1Password 7.

I canceled my subscription of 1Password two days ago. First of all, I don't like this new subscription trend. I don't use Ulysses anymore, or Fantastical,... I got burned several times buying a license and after that they surprisingly announced their new subscription only policy.

BUT: With 1Password I was ok with that. I know they need constant money inflow and if there is a reason to use this payment model, then with security software.

The reason I canceled: Agilebits mindset. They are betraying their user base as soon as the big business money is around the corner. They know that users want to use their own clouds. Their own space to save the vault. They know that their users want a dedicated Mac app. But all they do is ignore it. They are the big players and all they want now is corporate money.

And the worst thing: They use shady business practices.
Did you ever try to cancel a subscription?

First I was looking within their apps on iOS and MacOS. Nope, you can't.
Then I logged into the website.
Okay...
Let's look into the sidebar... "Billing"... ok lets click this button. No... I can see my active subscription, my due date, all across the whole screen but no way to cancel. So lets "google" for it. Oh, I have to click on "Billing settings", a very small link in the billings screen... And then click on the very small "Cancel" link.
It's so easy to subscribe, their apps and the website will show you the way. But their cancel button is hidden in a submenu of a submenu.
I have good eyes and I'm 40 years old. I've seen a lot of stuff since I bought my first 486 PC in de 90's. But this is something I haven't expected of a company that I pay premium to keep my passwords safe.

Why is there no option within their apps? Why is there no clear option in their Billings overview? I mean there isn't going on anything else than the active subscription. There is so much white space on this screen. No. They hide it.
That your mother, your grandmother, the average Joe can't find it without contacting support where they make you a special offer to stay as their customer.

Hide cancellation, make exporting all data next to impossible....an experience is fully in keeping with ABs (Agilebits) recent corporate ethical standards.

I see no legitimate valid trustworthy reason that AB refuse to let customers keep control of their own data in a location of their choice.

I see lots of reasons, none of them good for the customer, why AB demand customers provide all their data to be locked into the developers server.

Dealing with their astoundingly condescending 'support' is an experience itself. Just take a look at their forum...they shut down conversation, take matters 'off line', and respond with a underpinning condesending 'look you dont understand dear, ...just do what we say, we know whats best for you'

The narrative that the customers create too many support requests because they are just too stupid to use a product that synchronises with Dropbox, iCloud, onedrive is laughable. Especially since that is exactly what AB has provided for the last decade or more.

Its just not a crew I want to do do business with anymore, let alone allow them to store my bank details, logins etc.

PS: There are computer games, designed for children, that allow multiplayer in private servers set up by the player for themselves and their friends.
But apparently similar data sync is beyond AB... because... well...customers.

Really? This is impossible to export? I’m not sure how it can be any easier. I never even bother to look for it until now to see how hard it was to find.
I have a few apps that have their billing is only on the web version, I prefer it. My mom twice made and “ooops” on an app and canceled her service. When you go on the web version, it’s pretty easy to find.

I feel you. I used 1Password since 2011. I was there when it was a small team and all. And you just have to look at all the other "Apple recommends" apps. At some point they get big enough and then they will sell their soul for the big money... You can see this in the PC Games area, too. Just look at Blizzard.

As you say, as they aren't open source and they suddenly just take away the possibility to keep my own vault on my own cloud / PC, I have to trust them with my most personal data. And hell, they don't have my trust if they behave like the average insurance company, trying to sell you snake oil and telling lies while not caring about you anymore because they make money elsewhere.
There is no reason to force me to use their servers. None. My 67 year old father who bought the iPhone SE as his FIRST smartphone and who says that he hates computers was able to setup iCloud sync. This is just made up bs for the fanboys.

May I ask, what are you using instead of 1Password? I'm torn between just using Keychain or Bitwarden...

Now this smells like fanboy reasoning. First off all, yea, you can export data out of 1Password. In 1Pif format. Not csv. 1Pif. A proprietary JSON snippet file. Now please do your research before making a post that it is possible. Just "google" "import of 1pif failed" "1pif import mixed up data" and so on. This is a joke. Why would you develop your own export format when there already is a standard used by almost everyone in the industry?

Second, come on. There is a difference if you have a cancel button on the billing screen or if it is hidden in 2 submenus while the subscription buttons are all over the place. They hide it with a reason. You can't cancel it with an oooops, you are asked twice if you really want to do it because you won't have access anymore.

I’m not sure how it can be any easier.
I think you will find that it doesnt export TOTP in a form that other managers can import. You will need to export into CSV and then find the key in the string for each and copy and paste.
And it doesn't export any saved files at all.
Least that was what I found.

Enpass imports TOTPs from 1Password properly. I think Bitwarden does as well. Codebook, that is another issue. It imports fine, but we need to change the name to TOTP for it to function properly. That's all.

Fanboy, ok ?. I didn’t actually export, so I didn’t know it didn’t do it in CSV. I only stick with 1Password because my whole family is on it, and for less than $12 a year per person, it’s a deal. Getting gift cards for less also makes it even cheaper. The guess vaults are a huge plus also.

If it was just me, I would probably be using something else (I like Keepass a lot).
Right now it has to be cross platform, I can put it on unlimited devices (myself, I have it on 11 devices), family account (something that I can recover accounts for users like my mom who forgot her master password twice already), share vaults (great form my wife and I, and then with the kids), easy to use (my laws are in their 70’s and can use it very easily), and some other requirement. 1Password fits all of this for me and the 4 other people on my account, so that makes me a fanboy? Ok Cool.

I said this before, my mom and in-laws can set up a new device on their own now unlike the stand alone vaults where I had to set that up for them all the time when they got a new iPhone or whatever (dealing with Dropbox).

As for canceling, I logged on, went to settings, and it was right there. Pretty easy. Do you want it on the main page? Probably not. For fun I went on the Netflix app and you can’t do anything with the account from the app (just like 1Password), you have to log into their website, and it’s the same amount of clicks to cancel.

I have an account with a company and to change a credit card or cancel, it’s a whole different URL (and I have to use the email address for the login for the billing part unlike the actual app I use a user name, and they don’t tell me this until I locked myself out of the account and had to email them).

As I read though all of this, I found a few issues, and most I just thought whatever. I’m not in the mood to re-read 27 pages again To find them, it’s pointless. Do I like they are going to Electron for the apps? Nope. I think that is garbage and I have voiced my opinion with them. Will if make me move? No, because that’s one of the few things I don’t like about them.

this is a weird recommendation , very obscure, no one ever mentioned this any where. I wonder about the people behind it, is it 1-2 man team or what?

you seem to be impressed with the software code, why is that?

I’ve been using Codebook for over 20 years. It was previously called STRIP for Palm OS. Studied in university with the lead developer. Got to beta test version 0.01. That’s why; I’ve seen the code and it is thoughtful and clean.

Examine SQLCipher behind it and you can see what I mean. Really beautiful implementation, and great folks behind the software.

It’s simple, fast, functional and devoid of bloat. I really really appreciate that.

You’re right - it’s not the marketing machine of an Agilebits, but quality software is quality software.

On the TOTP thing — go post in their forum at zetetic.net; they’re usually super responsive. Sounds like a simple update to make the import process smooth as silk.

1P7 exports in a number of formats, including CSV.

Yep, pretty much a non-issue for me, personally. Mentioning it for others as-is.
