Does anyone know how I can find out which security version the install I have done has
A little late with the reply, but the info might help someone else.
The version info you mention can be found under "About this Mac -> System Report -> Installations"

fantastic work. turns out i needed the f2 variation of the driver. also downloads from macvideocards seem quicker than the nvidia website.

The only thing that worked for me was to reinstall the Pikified OSX El Cap over the existing OS. It won't replace any files but it fixes anything that is wrong. Make a BU of the drive just to be safe.

I don't know if you can run the Piked installer from the recovery drive ... I don't think you can. So, you'll have to boot from an old drive, mine was 10.7.5 with all other drives removed since I have no boot screen, mount the drive via usb or select the working drive as the startup, shutdown and reinstall the drives, then select the drive you want to install to and allow the piked installer to do it's thing. I've done it several times and all accounts and apps were in tact after installation. Good luck. Beware of things like Tinkertool and things like that, that may alter the system files. If that doesn't work, boot from recovery, completely restore the drive from your backup ... it most likely won't be a working system at that point so you'll still need to run the Piked installer after you restore from BU. Good luck.

Thank you i'll do that... If i do a backup of the actual drive and then transfer my files back onto the newly installed el capitan will i bring back the problem??

I know this is of no help to you now, but the situation you find yourself in is a classic example of why good working backups are so important.
When I find myself with a borked system, I just reboot from my last CCC cloned backed and restore my working drive.
Total downtime, maybe 10-15 minutes.
Good luck on your journey...

Hi guys! Did anybady had such problems?

1. Reboot to another OS X
I got two HD. The first one with OS X 10.7.5. The second with OS X 10.11.6 just now installed. Running 10.11.6 I point another HD in Startup Dick panel. After restart I got a boot loop. After forced turning off and on 10.7.5 is started normally. In the reverse order, everything's the same. At the same time boot selector (Option during power-up) works normally. Can this be fixed?

2. Installing RAM for OS X El Capitan
Building OS installer was OK. But the installation process was terrible: hang up, restart with messages '... because of a problem', boot loop after installation complete. But one day new OS started. After I set up it starts normally. I think the reason is that my Mac has less than 12 GB RAM. So I'm going to install additional RAM. I saw a post where samebody asked of RAM module sizes. Is the number and size of RAM modules important?

Configuration: Mac Pro 1,1 flashed to 2,1 / 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon / 11 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM / NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256 MB (thereafter I'll replace it)

I don't know much English so I couldn't scan all the posts in this thread. May be there are already answers to such questions?

Hi, I installed OSX El Capitan on my MacPro 1.1 using the Pikify app and all is working great!
Now I want to ask: is it possible to do a factory reset? I want to delete all the files and stuff on this pc but hold El Capitan. If it is possible, how can I do that?
Thank you so much!

Why not put in a new HD or even better an SSD and perform a clean install. This way if anything fails you have the original system to fall back to.

hi all an excellent thread this been in and out of here for a month or more after unwittingly buying an old 1,1 my first apple , it was a steep learning curve - updating to El-c and upgrading RAM even had Fan trouble then video card issues , when i bought i naively thought id just plug it in a be off .

Anyway im up and running and love it my best ever computer love the mac 1,1 and el capitan runs perfect very fast 16gb ram might go more in future .

Ive just backed up hdd which threw a few issues too buts im hopefully covered now , i switched of all updates after a boot loop failure last time it auto updated so hopefully im away .

Anyway my long winded question can i update Itunes as when i connect my Iphone phone i can upload photos but it requests new itunes every time , it not critical but if i can i will.

I've installed both Safari and iTunes updates without any problems. Just be sure to hide the security updates after 2017-005, as you'll get stuck in that boot loop again! You can install the application updates without installing the security ones.

Hello,
You can update iTunes 12.8.0
As well as Safari 11.1.2 (11605.3.8.1)

Personally I installed "SecUpd2018-004ElCapitan" and to avoid the boot loop I created an automatic tool that replaces the new kernel with the one of "SecUpd2017-005" (Kernel replacement operations explained by "Larsvonhier" and "kaosnews" (page 170 post #4237):

Fix SecUpdate ElCapitan Mac Pro 1.1-2.1 Start Loop.dmg

To use my tool you no longer need to have a clone of your ElCapitan system disk, for my part I launched my installation package from a External SSD with Lion 10.7.5 and everything worked very well ...
After 2 months EVERYTHING IS STILL STABLE

Hi There,

First of a massive thank you to everyone on this page, I have been following it for over a year now and have had my Mac Pro 1,1 running El Cap 10.11.6 for a while, it has been running fantastic! I decided to perform the update 2018-004 now version 15G22010. I ran the below by booting on to my Lion Drive and running it to my El Cap SSD and it did work perfectly! However this morning I loaded up El Cap and it ran strait into kernel panic. I then booted to Lion, ran the below again and then booted back in to El Cap with no issues.

Anyone have any idea why this may have happened? Was shut down for around 12 hours last night if that makes a difference? A little worried as 2017-005 was so stable and had no issues at all with it but suddenly after 20018-004 update and patch it seems to be off to a bumpy start!

Also since the update having an issue with iTunes..

Thanks all.

Jonnie.

Hello Jonnie,
is SIP disabled? I too had a lot of instabilities but not since 1 year that i disabled SIP.

To check SIP status:
  1. Open Terminal (Click Applications > Utilities > Terminal).
  2. Type: csrutil status
  3. hit enter
To disable SIP:
  1. Boot into Recovery Mode (Hold Command+R while turning on Mac).
  2. Open Terminal (Click Utilities > Terminal).
  3. Type: csrutil disable
  4. hit enter
  5. Restart your computer, and SIP will be disabled.

Did you try to repair the permissions? I use a free tool named OnyX 3.1.9 for OS X El Capitan 10.11
"Maintenance > Permissions > Execute"

Is your system disk an HDD or SSD? If your system disk is an HDD, start by checking the smart status of your hard drive. Then, let Onyx check the structure of your volume.

But you can try to clean, repair and rebuild all at once with Onyx:
"Automation > Execute"

I noticed that even after a clean installation of El Capitan there was a lot of permissions to repair and very often it is necessary to do the repair 2 to 3 times successively (for against it must ABSOLUTELY disable the SIP before performing the repair of permissions because OnyX is not able to repair permissions in many folders protected by the SIP).

Seems that El Cap is officially off the support list now at Apple, with the release of Safari 12 not making it to El Cap.

Are people now retiring their 1,1/2,1 MacPros, moving to Windows/Linux or continuing with El Cap for the moment? Interested to get thoughts on it.

I'll likely upgrade to a newer model Mac Pro or iMac within the next year, and keep my current Mac Pro 2,1 to run Windows 10 Pro exclusively.

Hi All,
I borked my mac 2,1 (flashed 1,1) with the latest update running el-capitan, so now am reinstalling it.
What is the latest update level I can safely install without screwing up!
Thanks :)

Hey All, I remember that someone compiled a list of graphics cards the worked out of the box with 2,1 Macs running El Cap. I can't find this list in MacRumors anymore, anyone know where it is. I think I am putting too much of a strain on the ATI Radeon 5770 with 3 monitors connected to it. I just want to lighten the load off of that card. I use to do work and watch all my tv programs on it at the same time. If anyone has a link to the thread, please post/send to me. I really appreciate it.

Hey maccyman, not to sidetrack your question, but I think none of the updates are okay because updates install new firmware for security reasons (I'm probably wrong, but...). But I will point out that I have my bootup volume cloned 3x, just for safe measure in case I "accidentally" screw up original boot drive. Drives are cheap nowadays and I use Carbon Copy Cloner.

Gibby.
