Can you use the Bootcamp Control Panel in Windows to set Mavericks as the startup disk?

Also, if you reset the PRAM you should hear the boot chime, the hold down cmd+option+P+R until you hear the boot chime again.

Yes I can access the control panel, but whatever I select, it just boots into Windows. Removing the windows drive means the computer just sits with a blank screen forever.

When I try to reset the PRAM, it just chimes once, and then boots as normal (into Windows) :(

Edit: I think I'll borrow someone else's laptop, try to build a proper USB key, manually again, and see if I can boot off that?

iMessage and FaceTime broken

Dear team,

I have recently updated my Mac Pro 1,1 (2,1 chipset) and am loving the Yosemite update, so thanks everyone who contributed to this.

As is mentioned in the summary up front, I cannot activate iMessage or FaceTime, nor do I get a validation code to give to Apple support. I spoke to Apple support and, without having mentioned the yosemite update, they could not see a way to fix or explain the problem.

Any ideas?

With Apple support we trashed preferences and moved another set of files out of the library folder, I have reinstalled the OS to a new disk using the SFOTT boot key method for the second time.

Another thing, I will be installing a 6GB/s SSD on a PCIe 2.0 card into a free PCIe 1.1 slot. Anyone know if this will limit the read/write speed of the drive (a 6 GB/s 540/520 speed drive)?

Cheers!

Had some questions and realized that maybe we could do something to help.

Mac Pro 1,1 and 2,1 are insanely fortunate in that using Pike's/Tiamo/Hennesie boot.efi only requires a new GPU and you have full compliance. Switching out the WiFi AC /BT 4.0 card makes for a machine that runs like a 2014 Mac. The 2006 -2008 Mini's, MBP, MBA, etc are stuck with ancient GPUs that can't really run with the big boys.

Hi,

Is it possible to upgrade the wifi card and bluetooth on a Mac Pro 1,1 to take advantage of Yosemite features?

Cheers

From the first post in this thread:

Support for Handoff in Yosemite to allow Continuity with iOS 8 devices:

The original Airport Extreme (802.11a/b/g/draft-n Wi-Fi) and Bluetooth 2.0+EDR options from Apple don't support Handoff. Several vendors, including MacVidCards, sell new add-on hardware kits to retrofit older Mac Pros with 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 LE that work in 2006/2007 Mac Pros to allow Handoff.

In Yosemite, both phone calls and SMS from OS X with an iPhone work with a 2006/2007 Mac Pro and are not dependent on OS X Handoff support.

Apologies for missing that, I'd been directly to their site, and saw the "* Not for use in other models of the Mac Pro". So thought i'd ask for his opinion if there was actually a solution out there.
I think you'll find this situation true for graphics cards as well. Because modern replacement hardware requires Mavericks or Yosemite, which requires a new bootloader on these Mac Pros, it's easier for a vendor to say "unsupported" when in face it can work flawlessly if you're willing to jump through the Yosemite installation hoops.

Thanks. That's good news. And since i've already jumped the hoops i'm ready.

Great stuff, thanks for the help.

Yes, we still have it spelled out that way. No matter how simple we try to make explanations at least once a week we get angry emails about GTX780s not working in 10.6.8 and things of this nature.

The new WiFi & BT card works flawlessly and seamlessly in 10.10 in a 1,1 or 2,1.

However, the drivers didn't appear until 10.8.4.

So, never in an OS that runs natively on those machines. So average Joe sees "works in 1,1 Mac Pro" and skims over the rest to the "order now" button. Installs in a 1,1 and boots into 10.7.5. And sees "no hardware installed".

Another unhappy customer.

So we are still debating how to list them as working in those machines.

I wouldn't list them as compatible but if you do be sure to put and asterisk next to it and explain it all.

Swapped out my fancy dancy logitech keyboard for an old Apple original I have with my G4 cube and the PRAM reset perfectly. Still facing the same problem though. Blank screen going no where when the Windows drive is pulled, boots straight into Windows when its in.

Can see both Time Machine recovery partition, AND the Mavericks drive in the Bootcamp control panel, but can't boot into them.

IIt's looking for a Windows drive.

If SMC reset won't do it, don't know what will.

I have had things show up in Bootcamp but still go to Windows before.

Whelp, it just randomly worked. Not sure WTF is going on there, but instead of stuttering the startup chime repeatedly the way it usually does when booting off an external, it just chimed once, and booted right up. I'm more then a little confused.

However, once the installer ran it asked me which language I wanted, I clicked next and it came up with "Yosemite is already installed on this computer, please reboot and try again." On to the next puzzle!

A few others have reported that message in this thread. I am not sure if they figured out whats was causing it. It shouldn't matter if Yosemite is already installed because you can always reinstall the OS if something gets messed up or you need to downgrade.

Having posted the above, I have other issues. When preparing the start up drive, I realized all I had to do was upgrade the hard drive (externally USB connected) using my MacMini, copy the boot.efi to the correct locations and put it back into my MacPro. I did and it wouldn't go. I then copied the Tiamo boot.efi to the correct places and tried again. This time it worked. I then noticed I had the Install jump drive (without the FPE part AND another external USB drive that had a fresh Yosemite install with boot.efi transferred). Everything was working perfectly for a few days until we experienced some power loss event in my neighborhood. Even though the MacPro is surge protected AND on a UPS, the power was gone long enough for it to power down. I wasn't at home to shut down the machine. I any case, after this, the unit never started up again and instead, the rear fan come on full speed. I tried changing the power supply and switching the upgraded processors from one slot to another, but still a no go. In short, is my mother board fried?

Strange video driver/NVRAM problem

I've got something strange happening here with the NVRAM settings on my 1,1 (flashed to a 2,1 w/ 5355's) and an un-flashed Nvidia GT 610.
Overall everything works great, it's just this one little thing that I'm hoping somebody with a similar system could try to see if they can duplicate it for me.

There is some weirdness happening when I zap the PRAM using the "command-option-P-R" key combination.

I've tried this with both commit 2ed42fe and 3b402a9 of Pike's boot.efi, and the result are the same with both builds, I didn't have the chance to try this on any earlier builds.
I know this worked with Tiamo's boot.efi build for Mavericks.

So… I try to zap the PRAM, and after getting the second chime I release the keys and wait for the video to come back (since I don't have a boot screen).
Only problem is the video never comes back.

So I plug my old 7300GT in to see what the problem is, and it boots fine, all the way up to the login screen.
Then I can remove the 7300 and put the 610 back in, and all is well.

I've found I can zap the PRAM all day with the 7300 installed, and I always get back to the login screen, but if I have the un-flashed GT 610 installed I never get any video out until I first re-install the 7300.

Once I get to the login screen with the 7300 installed, I can shut down, re-install the GT610, and everything works great again.
It's almost like my system won't recognize the 610, until it gets one clean boot with the old 7300 installed.

I have tried using both Apple's built in Yosemite drivers, and the latest Nvidia web drivers, and the problem is still the same.

Very strange.
I don't know if anybody else here has experienced anything similar, or if someone has a similar system. maybe they could try to zap the PRAM using "command-option-P-R" and see if they can duplicate this.

Thanks.

Have you tried connecting with VNC? I have this issue sometimes with my GTX 570 and it does actually boot all the way to desktop as I can see it through a VNC connection from my phone. From there I go to the Apple menu and restart. After it restarts it works fine. I don't think it is related to the boot.efi file though. I would have this issue after resetting the PRAM to boot back into Mavericks with Tiamo

Wow you nailed it man, thanks !
I just logged in through VNC on my iPad, and did a shutdown and re-boot over VNC and the video came back.

Still, very strange, since I powered the monitor down and back up and it wouldn't sync the DVI connection, but still a much easier workaround than swapping video cards.
Thanks again, I can live with that workaround, since I don't have to zap the PRAM all that often :) !

There are no drivers for the GMA950 graphics. It would be mostly unusable.

2006/2007 Mac Pro (1,1/2,1) and OS X Yosemite

I am a total noob trying to make this work, and I am about to give up and buy a newer machine. I have tried several methods to install Yosemite on my 1,1 but I have failed at all. Tried Chameleon method first - got multiple error messages and would not boot from the HD. Tried the Hennesie method - used 3 different USB drives and multiple attempts. I cut and pasted dutifully and carefully checked each step. I have re-made the USB drive 10 times. The first reboot took 45 minutes to restart the computer, and then re-opened back in Lion. Subsequent attempts have taken a shorter amount of time to reboot, but I always end up back in Lion. I just tonite decided to try the SFOTT method. My computer crashed completely. I am having to do a restore from Time Machine and since I have over 900 GB of photos, movies, files, etc, the restore appears will take several days. I will gladly pay for someone's time to help me. Desperate.
