I do have an issue with the NVIDIA GeForce GT 640 2 GB card when rebooting or turning on. I do have to confirm though that 3 displays are working perfectly fine if efi decides to load properly. When I do a regular restart, or a regular turn on, for some reason the graphics card is not loading. I can remote in from another computer and see that the system booted, but no graphics, screens are black. If I do a hard reset (holding the power until turns off and and turn on) the card boots.

I have exactly the same problem. Instead of the hard reset via the power button I use the remote login to reboot the system. Upon the second reboot the GT640 is usually properly recognized.

I read on MacVidCards that there is a flashing service available for that card.

I have only had this issue after resetting the PRAM.

I can't imagine flashing will help in this case as I believe that it'd be EFI64 firmware which won't be recognized by the EFI32-booting 2006/2007 Mac Pro.

Yosemite installed then wouldn't again!

I used the SFOTT Beta to install Yosemite as a clean install onto one of my disc partitions. All went well and I have a working installation of Yosemite.

There were some issues with identity and permissions, however, where I used the migrate application to copy ID and apps over from my Mavericks partition. While trying to fix this I messed things up a little and decided to install another clean copy of Yosemite onto another partition. (I have 7TB of storage on 4 internal HDs and 2 externals so space is no problem for this). The two external drives are connected by USB3 connections from a PCI card rather than by the native USB2.

When I tried to create another install, however, I found I was unable to do so. The Mac just hangs whenever I try. This is with an unflashed ATI Radeon HD5770 in normal use so I can't see the boot process on screen.

I also Have an original NVidia GeForce 7300 still in a slot so am able to unplug the screens from the 5770 and into the 7300 so that I can see the boot process (and use an alt-start to choose a start-up partition)

I've put the boot onto internal hard drive partitions (which is what I had initially to install Yosemite - and Mavericks before it). I've also tried it on two different USB sticks.
I've tried rebuilding the SFOTT Beta several times (as this list suggests that the installer created is not always the same).

If the 5770 is in use then the system simply hangs. I can leave it for hours and nothing happens.

If I switch to the 7300 then I can see the boot process...
I've had a few different results show up, here. I've had the grey apple screen and spinner start up, then change to the black screen with a progress bar. I've had this progress bar go to about half way then freeze. I've even left this overnight for more than 8 hours but it doesn't go past this point.
More commonly I've had the progress bar go about one third of the way and then the Mac boots into whichever OS is indicated in system prefs.

When I try it in verbose mode I get a few lines suggesting the efi has booted but nothing more (see attached).
Starting in single mode I get a few pages of text then a long stream of 'bug' errors and finally it reboots into the OS chosen in sys prefs.
Once or twice I've had it go straight to a kernel panic report instead.

Not only can I not install a new Yosemite, I can't re-install Mavericks, either, now. I get the same sort of results when I try the previous version of SFOTT installer.

The Mac boots into my original installation of Yosemite happily enough though the 7300 video card can barely cope.
The screen refreshes visible with every window movement and the mouse curser submarines as you move it.
With the ATI 5770, the screens are perfect and the GPU acceleration seems to be working fine.

Some of my reading suggested USB connections might have an effect so I have tried with and without the 2 external USB drives connected and I have unplugged all other USB and firewire devices except keyboard and mouse.

One question springs to mind...
It seems that the there have been several versions of the boot.efi and I wonder whether the version used with the SFOTT Betqa has changed since my first successful install of Yosemite? It may be that my later attempts have been with a different boot.efi?

For information, I am still able to install Snow Leopard and Lion on this machine - tested using internal HD partitions.

Finally got round to upgrading my 1,1 to 2,1 today.

It's a really easy job to do if you have one of the updated firmware versions. Pain in the cheeks if you don't.

Guess which one I had...

Anyway, much searching through the thread found the answer.

Now I'm having a look at eBay for some CPUs. The 5360s are a bit rich for my blood. The 5355s are looking a much better bet at less than half the price.

Found some RAM that didn't look too expensive either.

What a fun little project. :)

Anyone have issues with apps randomly crashing? IE, Rivet won't open at all (Im not sure if that is related) but I have a transmission running and it will randomly crash after a few days ect..

GTX560ti, mac pro 1,1, and 32gb of ram. 2.66 Dual Core X2 if that matter at all.

I followed henessie's guide.

The two apps you listed are so old and haven't been developed for years. Both Rivet and IE were discontinued over 10 years ago. You can expect them to run.

* Transmission (Torrent app) not IE. - It seems to be working perfectly fine for most others on 10.10. Sorry for the confusion.

EDIT:
I also have an issue with 10.10 booting after reboot it will try to boot to the cd drive it sounds like and never loads. If I force reboot (Hold power and turn it back on) it will boot correctly.

I have only had this issue after resetting the PRAM.
Same here with a GT610, Hennesie you actually helped me out with this.

I can reboot using the front panel power button all day long and still not get any video out, until I log in with VNC and do a reboot (or shutdown then reboot) from software.

I wonder what is causing this, because on the second reboot from software it is fine.

Very strange, I don't remember this happening in Mavericks running the Tiamo boot.efi, but then again my memory isn't what it used to be. ;)

Henessie2000,

I can't thank you enough for all the help, I am running Yosemite now, I wanted to report that, when I reboot the computer I get to the following image:

2lmv2a9.jpg

It takes a few minutes to get to the login window, iMessage gives a message to call costumer service, trash can has a almost transparent look, other that that, everything seems to work fine.

Thanks,

Thanks,

For iMessage just call customer service and it will work. Have your serial number and Apple ID ready. For the long boot time you can try rebuilding the kernel cache.

Hello Henessie2000,

I had rebuild the Kernel Cache with "Terminal" and "Onyx", boot time has improved but I still see the progress bar on the picture previously posted. Once the computer boots everything works fine, I guess I should not worry if everything is working so far, also, I had seen my computer specifications on Apple's website and the PSU is 300w for my Mac Pro 2,1 I am running applications that relays on CUDA, Open GL/CL, at the moment I have an Nvidia GTX 8800 and I would like to update the graphic card, which Nvidia card would you recommend for a Mac Pro 2,1 running OS X Yosemite?.

Thanks.

That progress bar is supposed to be there; replaces the spinning wheel from previous versions of OS X. It is part of Yosemite.

Thanks Henessie2000,

I greatly appreciate your help and knowledge, and finally, which Nvidia graphics card would you recommend based on the my computers specifications and the CUDA, OpenGL/CL features that I need for Video and 3D production?.

Thanks again.

Yes, we still have it spelled out that way. No matter how simple we try to make explanations at least once a week we get angry emails about GTX780s not working in 10.6.8 and things of this nature.

The new WiFi & BT card works flawlessly and seamlessly in 10.10 in a 1,1 or 2,1.

However, the drivers didn't appear until 10.8.4.

So, never in an OS that runs natively on those machines. So average Joe sees "works in 1,1 Mac Pro" and skims over the rest to the "order now" button. Installs in a 1,1 and boots into 10.7.5. And sees "no hardware installed".

Another unhappy customer.

So we are still debating how to list them as working in those machines.

Out of Stock =(

The 3,1 cards should be up in next day or two.

We need to get caught up on existing orders.

We had a glitch last week where people ordered and paid for cards and we never got the order from our sales site.

Anyhow, the pieces are here for quite a few more, we will be listing them as we get caught up on existing orders.

Will be having a guy come in this week to help catch up. Testing is time consuming but cuts down on returns, quite a bit.

Out of Stock =( ;););)

by the way, I got mine from eBay for 30 AUD + 9 bucks for the adaptor.
look for "BCM94360CD".
it work fine.. not certain to actually understand why you need to spend more.
I have order last night a "BCM94360CS2" for my mac book air...
effectively they are second hands.... but I saw 10 new cards on alibaba for 30$ a piece..
people selling that for more are making quite a margin I suppose... it's like paying 90 buck to flash a video card :)..

Ok, I'll try to describe exactly what i want to do.
I've replaced the original HDD Drive on my 17" Macbook Pro 2.1 with a 250GB Samsung SSD and now want to install the latest version of OS X.
I have created an USB device following the guide from Hennesie2000. The SDD is new and formatted with OS X journaled.
Now i want to install Yosemite from the USB device. When I start the computer the grey screen appears with the apple logo, then a beam but afterwards the install-program tells me that Yosemite is already installed.
Would be great if you can tell me what's my mistake.

Does anyone have an idea what's the problem?
I 've tried it many times but it's always the same. The SDD is formatted but the Installer tells me that OS X Yosemite is already installed.

Maybe you're setting the target destination wrong? Sounds like you're trying to install it back onto the USB.

Shouldn't matter though. You can reinstall OS X over top of an existing install of the same OS. Many times I have reinstalled Yosemite over top of Yosemite or Mavericks over top of Mavericks.
