Huh wait, so after reading the full TS this is how I figured out that my fat 27 inch iMac Mid 2010 was one of the best supported models.

So I don't see why the RX480 wouldn't work?
What has all this to do with my answer? I was writing about the heat sink you are planning to use.

You can - of course - do as you please, but do not complain here after burning the best bang for the buck on the current heat sink.

P.S.: You need no copper plate and I am sure it has never been mentioned to use one with the RX480. Just stick to the GPU table information and do not confuse rows or lines. We will not cross check …

If I use iMac Mid-2010 only for browsing and MS Office.
Is it possible not to change AMD HD5670 512Mb? Will this graphics card work well on Monterey? Friezes and lags should not be?

No, not really. Neither youtube playback works properly nor the most recent Office will run on non metal. Get a M5100 or something similar.

What makes me curious: How on earth can you come up with this request after trying to cripple a S7100X? Do you need 8GB VRAM for Office?

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I was reading it wrong sorry.

So if I put the RX480 into my Fat 27 Inch iMac from Mid 2010 I would actually need a 3 pipe 2011 heatsink (idk why but I thought it said 2010 heatsink)? Is that how I should read it?

For both of you:

Both the S7100X (called a barn heater back in 2018 here on the thread by one of the most prominent developers) and the RX480 need a 2011 three pipe heat sink.

The S7100X will simply shut down the iMac within minutes installed on the HD5670 sink you have. Same applies to the RX480. Both cards need the ODD sensor relocated. Can we please change the topic?

I realized a long time ago that the S7100X only needs a three pipe heat sink.

It is possible a question for the general understanding.
What TDP is the two pipe heat sink designed for?
Up to 35W?

For the test I installed Monterey on the built-in HDD(!) of the iMac (MC510LL/A) and 1080p YouTube-video playback is fine on the HD 5670M.
Does the decode process utilize the GPU or CPU? Did you run a 10s clip or did you watch hours (what some users apparently do). It is even not clear if the decode process on CPU will utilize the decoder hardware (Intel Lynnfield , Arrandale and later) on macOS or the general purpose instructions (which is again less efficient and burns more watts, but we all know, this is for free).
P.S.: TPD per sink -> first post #11

To connect two Thunderbolt Displays to a single Thunderbolt port, the GPU needs to have two DisplayPort outputs connected to the two DisplayPort inputs of the Thunderbolt controller.

The MXM connector can support multiple DisplayPort outputs. I suppose an iMac requires two specific DisplayPort outputs to be used. Perhaps some MXM cards support more than one display, but not to the two DisplayPort connections required by the iMac?
Likely we have not spent enough time into this problem with new AMD cards.

I have a question unrelated to yours:
The first post says the Target Display Mode doesn't work with some GPUs. That doesn't make sense because it is the GPU of the other computer that will be controlling the display. Maybe it's a software issue which disables the switch.
This information on post #1 is more a compilation of feedback collected from different users when Mojave and Catalina hit the road.

Just now I am sitting in front of two (three) iMacs12,2 and a single MacBookAir 2012, two of them are connected via TB using the TDM.

Notes:
- (*) on disconnect I have to plug in an external display or display emulator to switch the internal backlight on, again
- if you find confusing entries take into account it may be only a stability issue (no cold boot on each new attempt)
- The RX5500XT supports out of the box both display connectors and has a TB bridge on the card.
- WX4130/WX4170 supports only a single display connection
- To disconnect I have very often to enter the CMD+F2 at least two times
- no connection is probably not 100% accurate, sometimes TDM seems to work after a reboot of the target, again
- sound hardware of the target does not work, you have to use the source system, same problem described before
- both Ventura and Sonoma needs root volume patching to support the GPU and avoid AVX2 code

This is no sales support here, but I can assure only these cards have been used in mining:
S7100X, RX480, WX7100, RX5500XT, potentially the W7170M, too.
Thanks for the reply.
What is the power consumption of the S7100X in browsing mode or just idle?

Do all the sources provide display output to a Thunderbolt Display or a display connected to a Thunderbolt dock? That is the minimum requirement for a Thunderbolt source for Thunderbolt Target Display Mode.

- sound hardware of the target does not work, you have to used the source system, same problem described before
With my iMac 27-inch, Late 2013 it appears as a DisplayPort sound output device to my Mac mini 2018 connected via Thunderbolt Target Display Mode, but no sound is audible. The iMac can play audio from iTunes while its display is being used by the Mac mini 2018.

It appears that dpaudiothru doesn't work in Ventura (it does not appear as a process with dpd in Activity Monitor.app). Same for Monterey and Big Sur.
It gets launched in Catalina but the screen remains black and there's no audio. I believe I got Target Display Mode to work while the iMac is running Catalina by somehow disabling and reenabling the iMac display from the Mac mini using SwitchResX but I couldn't get that to work now while the Mac mini is running Ventura.
I don't have Mojave on the iMac.

Audio over Thunderbolt Target Display Mode works when the iMac is running High Sierra. One interesting thing is that the volume can be changed from the keyboard from the Mac mini. That's not something you can usually do with a DisplayPort or HDMI display. Is the audio signal really the same as a DisplayPort audio signal? Or is it transmitting audio using a different method?

Target Display Mode with the iMac running Ventura has a lot of flickering. It may become more steady over time. Big Sur and Monterey and High Sierra are much better (no flickering).

Encountering a complete system lock, seemingly at random, when running Ventura with the RX480 on my 27" iMac 2010 11,3. Seems to occur most often when I'm simply letting the computer idle, as opposed to actively using it. The freezing does not occur at all in Monterey.

While it could be something specific to do with Ventura vs. Monterey, I'm wondering if it's actually something to do with the fact that I'm currently running Ventura on an external FireWire 800? I of course have the FireWire boot option installed via OCLP.

Hello all,

So I finally made the upgrade... mid 2010 iMac 11,3 with 2,93 GHz i7, 16GB RAM, 2TB SSD; replaced the GPU with RX480, upgraded to Ventura with OCLP 0.6.5. Everything went relatively smoothly and now I have a working system. I am quite very happy already, but I am wondering if I can make it even more perfect:
1. Bluetooth cannot see devices so I cannot use my Magic Trackpad 1... Not a deal breaker but would be nice if I can make it work
2. It's not slow, but definitely slower than when I used high Sierra... I also notice in activity monitor that GPU always close to zero (usually less than 1%) even though gpu time is showing ok. I am not using much things with GPU though, just maybe photos app, safari, Firefox... How can I check if GPU acceleration works ok ?
3. I had bad experience when I install OCLP 0.6.8 and 0.6.9 (nightly build) root patches for Ventura before settling with 0.6.5, meaning I had problems booting.... I have not played much though, maybe I did some mistakes back then. My question is, is there any advantages in updating/upgrading my OCLP to 0.6.8 from 0.6.5? Is it worth the time and trouble? Is my Ventura going to be faster?

Anyways, I am very very grateful for all people working on this project. I believe I can at least get 5 more years with this 2010 beauty 😊😊😊

Please show a screenshot of HWMonitor ver. 6.26.1440 when working in Safari.
After downloading HWMonitor I found out that my GPU temperature is 129C, so I checked the GPU again and it turned out the temperature sensor was not seated properly. I think the slowness of my computer was because of GPU throttling because now that I re-seated the jack/pins my computer is noticeably faster.

Somehow HWMonitor still can't show the GPU die temperature, but Mac Fan Control shows temperature of only 44C, so I guess they should be OK now.

I'm happy. This thing is like new again 😊 Thank you again for all the people working on this GPU upgrade and OCLP !

If there is one thing left,.... my bluetooth is still not working. But it's not a big deal, though..

As already reported, my system is running quite well. with Ventura 13.5.2. I have another question
can I turn off the start crime. It worked well with Big Sure via the software, but it no longer works with Ventura. Does anyone have an idea or is it the same for everyone?
