Yes. Except on the issues about the Boot screen and the Backlight control.

GTX 756MX? Or 765MX? Don't find information about those, only the 675MX, that would be a Kepler (GK106 (N13E-GSR)). Could be, but there are people here with a GTX 660M (GK107 (N13E-GE)) which didn't worked that well.

If you have the card, just test it. If you have to buy it, buy one from the one we know working.

Is there anyway to access data on the 2011 with a dead graphics card? Would like to transfer it if possible - without ripping the whole thing apart.

If you can still see the apple logo when you turn it on, you could try target disk mode: https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201462
I had success booting into ubuntu with a dead gpu previously, so that might worth a chance too
If above methods fail, you need to remove the HDD

Regarding the backlight mod, and the use of the TL494 PWM module, not having much success at setting the frequency and duty cycle, and was wondering if this module would also work,(https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32835541668.html) as you can see it as a onboard display so there is no need of a oscilloscope it say’s the output is 5~30mv. So if I use the 1.8K and 6.8K resistors the will the output be 3.25v or would a adjustable step-down module be a better option.

This would work. No resistors necessary. The PWM output amplitude will equal the input DC voltage. So if you wire this to the 3.25V supply you will get what you need. The only question is whether the module stores its settings when powered down. Its also rather big but I imagine you could fit it in the area of the HDD provided it's replaced with an SSD.

Hi there,

can anybody confirm that Target Display Mode is still working for the 27 inch 2010 model after GPU upgrade?
Just searched through this thread and based on post #942 it still seems to work?

Somebody try to install the HD 6970M 2Gb in the iMac 2011 21.5-inch? It is possible or the 21.5 has not space enough inside?

Many thanks!
Best

no should not be possible.
6970m is a MXM-A card, while 21,5" iMac only has space for smaller MXM-B cards.
(for reference see opening post pictures)

and Why should you want to install this AMD card, rather go for an compatible nvidia quadro card.
Much better choice in my opinion...

As far as I can remember, Target display mode is not working.
We need a custom vbios for this on our Nvidia cards.

So far only working with stock original Apple AMD cards.

Of course correct me if Im wrong here...

Hi folks:
I have a mid 2011 imac 27 inch that came with an amd 6970 gpu. The gpu is dead or sort of ( led 3 is off). I purchased a dell alienware nvidia 860m card on ebay. I replaced the 6970 with 860m but the led 3 is still off and my display is black even after connecting my screen. In total led 3 and 4 are off while led 1 & 2 are on . I though it was the the logic board but even with a spare logic board led 3 is off.

I know the power supply and invertors are working and the logic board is getting the voltage from the power supply. what could be the issue ?

Is there something that needs to be done ( like driver installation) to have the 860m working ?

OS on my mac is high sierra and Mojave

now i install an 860m working perfektly....

-black boot screen for 10 sec :) +chrimes
-full FAN speed
-lights is full up
i do have a question. do you have led 3 and 4 ON on your imac. i recently installed 860m but my led 3 and 4 are off . is that normal. my card was taken out from dell alienware. Before installing the card did you do something or just plug and play the card ?

getting a 2013 iMac kepler bios, and mod it would be an idea indeed, I have been thinking about this to in the past..
But i don't have the skills to do the job..
Maybe some smart one of us, can figure this one out, and release a Apple vbios for all of us out there.. ?

As of this day, I don't see anybody has uploaded his 2013 nvidia bios to techpowerup vga bios database.. ?
https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios...le&model=&interface=&memType=&memSize=&since=

about your 3rd thought, i doubt that it would work then on 2009,2010 iMac's if it already does not work in the 2011 one.

Honestly haven't finished catching up on the thread but I pulled the vbios off a Late 2012 iMac 27" with a 660m a while back specifically for this purpose. Dunno how to upload it on techpowerup, but I put it on Mega: https://mega.nz/#!Lgw2XYwZ!xz50etMrtKvR6lR4ee5-0c8gYVDaxZctKygk5UWhioI

This sounds really good! I think the best way to flash the rom(without an MXM adapter or a PC notebook that has an mxm slot) with a raspberry pi + a soic clip: http://tomvanveen.eu/flashing-bios-chip-raspberry-pi/

How did you pulled off the vbios btw?

I have the same card. Were you able to get it to work with imac

As far as I know running tools like gpu-z and or others can easy save the vbios running on bootcamp windows.

What about this card ? Looks like it Kepler, but subvendor is MSI

looks like a MSI card to me.
I dont think MSI cards will work.

You can how ever try to flash an compatible Dell/Alienware vbios to it...
Note subvendor inside the GPU-Z screenshot, it shows MSI

in theory, yes we can try to mod this vbios of this GTX660m, and make it work with our compatible Dell/Alienware kepler nvidia cards.
I think we need a brilliant guy like Rominator, netkas or someone else, to make this work for us ;)

For safekeeping, I have put the imac rom in my post here.
Just in case the mega link will die in the future from @swimllamaswim posted here above.. ;)

actually it is possible. you just have to bend a little bit of the frame inside. i installed a 770m in an imac 21,5

Risks?

I will not have the problem of the brightness control right with this card?
As long as it has the Apple BIOS on it, no, it should be work like it was meant to be there. People have performed similar upgrades before and they worked fine. You will get EFI bootscreen and brightness control for sure.

Even if it is a graphic card for a iMac 27? My plan is install it in a 21.5

Thanks!

As long as it fits and is connected properly, it should work fine. As someone said, minor modification is probably needed, probably just cutting a bit of plastic to fit the longer GPU.

since the 6970m is an MXM-A card, and does not meet the size of an MXM-B card.
The thermal design of the 21,5" iMac's, GPU heatsink will be too small, and does not provide enough cooling for the 6970m card.
Also most of the vram chips and capacitors will not have any cooling with the 21,5" GPU heatsink.
This will shorten the live of this card even more, in my opinion not worth even trying it.
Yes it could work, but in my opinion not worth it...
