Whenever they decide to grace us with an upgrade, it'll probably be dual 980 level performance, and they will cherry pick benchmarks to show that it is xx% faster than the d700s.

To those claiming the nMP isn't a workstation, please let me know which apps in OSX (OSX Only) benefits from dual cpu or quad gpu?

Do the nMP/osx is used for protein folding, or high frequency trading, or something heavier than Arithmetica or video editing, and of course 3D rendering.

Few pro's on OSX are concerned about a 2nd cpu, and while is somewhat valid to cry for CUDA we should recognize CUDA as the evil closed GPGPU platform we need to destroy with OpenCL, and actually the nMP is up for all the current OSX applications, and while don't offer the best 3D rendering performance it's true many pros actually rent by hours a Renderfarm For that (also those with more powerful hw use to rent gpu time when they need an final rendering).

So I think Apple is selling the workstation that OSX users need (at least at launch, as current the nMP is outdated).

A mac pro is an studio machine not an industrial Bulldozer, for those exists multi cpu workstation, compute severs and so on.

About market decline, it's has more related to delay on sensitive updates than on actual demand decline, Compute performance market moves as the improvements are released, now the industry is waiting for Xeon E5v4 as well new gpu and the new Xeon phi to release orders that's true from the Mac Pro to super computer orders both waiting for Intel/AMD To release that over promised improvement, mostly gpu and mic for compute are delaying new computer servers and workstations orders (the same reason why we don't buy a new mac pro today).

So I consider this specialized market grown as the economy growns and buy as soon new technology is released not in a regular timing as other markets but as soon they can profit from the new technology.

Few specific things are waiting hp Dell and supermicro customers: 22 core Xeon E5v4 and new Xeon Phi knights landing as well the new nVidia and AMD Pro GPU specifically nVidia is almost 2 year delayed since announced Pascal. Ok that is in short term, in mid-long term HPC should move from x86-64 to ARM, PowerPC also Intel should relaunch Itanium At least for HPC the road end for x86 it's visible now.

OpenCL is going nowhere. Apple will drop OpenCL support before Nvidia drops CUDA.

I am not a pro, and I need as many cores and as much RAM as I can stuff into my computer. My entire hobby workflow is built around CPU horsepower (ZBrush Vue, Poser Pro 11) All of this software is within the reach of hobbyists (and I am not talking about EDU pricing either.).

3d rendering isn't just for professionals anymore (nor has it been for a while now).

When the 6,1 came out, I replaced my 1,1 with a 4,1. The 6,1 failed my TCO analysis. I doubt I am the only one.

...you do realize that Apple controls whether or not CUDA can exist? They're the ones with the signing power on the kernel extension.

Anyway, OpenCL is being replaced by Metal. But the OpenCL API probably has another 5-10 years of life before it goes away. Apple can't just randomly drop APIs.

Price drop might be a realization of the poor success of the device. Oh well sounds like I'll be sinking my teeth on a new imac

at least we got OS X 10.11.4... :-(
Anything new there?
Who said Apple never drops prices? The watch did see a price drop. Not that I care!!

Doesn't apple have a pretty consistent history of dropping the price of initial models of new products? Like with the iPhone?

Of course, we didn't see that with the new Mac Pro.

And while I'm not surprised given the rumors leading up to the event, its a bit sad we didn't see a single thing about any Mac.

So you guys will be building hackintosh's as render slaves.

I gave up back in 2012 and switched my workstation to linux. I've really given up fully on the MP, at least in its current form. If it ever gains back a duel processor option, I'd be happy to return to Mac.

What's really irritating now is that I like having OS X, since a lot of my work is in linux/unix, but now the Macbook Pro is going the way of the 2010 Mac Pro it seems. And my 2011 MBP is about due for an update....

I would encourage anyone that can do their work on Linux to build their own box and do so but I also understand that not always possible. If I could work on Linux (which I can) and share files (which I can't) my MP at work would be a Linux box in a heart beat but as it stands right now I have none of my own money in the Apple game so I can't really criticize.

[Cough] Carbon64 [Cough]

I dunno why Carbon64 was ever something they promised anyhow. It clearly wasn't something they were all that interested in. But it's a bit irrelevant to his point as they didn't actually ship it in a .X release. It was canned in development.

Guys, they just haven't finalized the rose-gold case design for the nnMP...

Would probably look brilliant. If I had more money than sense I would have definitely sent my Macs to ColorWare and gotten custom finishes for them.

I don't think anyone seriously expects a new , new Mac Pro to be released today . After all , this decade isn't over yet and Apple sure has a lot of time left to get it right ;) .

I still am hoping for a Dual E5 Broadwell Mac Pro Mid Tower say ... released this April . I know . A guy has to have hope .

Maybe April's fool :)

Isn't the iPad Pro "almost" a Mac? Just kidding...

I guess now only June might bring some news, possibly only MacBooks and Pros. Hardly nMP though.
