Yep, I will definitely hold on to my 2017 one. A10X is enough for me, and Touch ID works great (i have a 8+ phone so I don‘t miss Face ID as I‘m not used to it). These tablets are meant to last!
Maybe. I just had a bright white spot appear on my screen and my battery was approaching 80% efficiency. Thankfully it got replaced under AppleCare. Hopefully the replacement lasts longer!

The next serious feature that will tempt me to upgrade will be an OLED screen. I had thought before that it wasn't a big deal, but having it on my phone is a bit of a game changer. When I'm in bed in the dark, reading from my phone like they tell you not to.. I find that going into Reader mode and setting it to a black background... literally only the letters are giving off light instead of the whole screen. It's like magic seeing these words just floating in the dark. On my iPad the whole screen is illuminated, even when black. I find it glorious to be able to read on the OLED with nothing but orange-tinted (Night Shift on) words floating in pitch blackness. Much easier on the eyes and easier to fall asleep after.

I am fearing that you have to wait for this at least until spring 2020....

face id is the worst (on the X). Cant wait to get face id on the iPad and see how many people break the screens dropping it trying to hold it look at it and swipe up all one time. Opening the phone is cumbersome enough.

Each to their own, Face ID is just easier than using Touch ID for me.

I just do not understand how someone can say it’s easier and faster. You can literally have your phone open half way up to your face on Touch ID. Doesn’t get much faster or easier than that.

Touch ID was not 100% accurate on my 7 plus. With raise to wake with Face ID it’s still very quick and instant. It’s open in a sec from picking the phone up. You also don’t need the phone in a certain angle. Any normal way you hold the phone and it’s instant

I think that’s the hard thing for those of us who don’t have Face ID on our devices yet to grasp, for me personally especially.

There is a lot of time spent during the week where I’m not HOLDING my IPP at all, it’s sitting flat on the desk in either portrait or landscape orientation with the camera pointing to the ceiling and I’m at a greater than 45 degree angle from the camera unlocking the tablet. I’ll have to see how the implementation plays out once Face ID comes to iPads to see what kind of angles it will support. With my corporate email security restrictions my device locks within 5 minutes maximum so I’m unlocking it many times over the course of a day. I don’t want to have to shift the device or pick it up frequently.

Face ID isn’t as accurate at Touch ID but I find it easier to use. I’m not sure how it would work on the new iPads though.

faceId is the future, now probably the version 2 will support both vertical and horizontal, probably faster, and maybe with ios12 to have the option to disable swipe up. Faceid will be very good also in products like imacs and macbooks

OLEDs over hyped. Pro motion is overhyped
ProMotion is no gimmick. I love it and can tell the difference visually and in Pencil performance.

I am with you on OLED though. I have an iPhone X and I really don’t see much difference between this and any other Retina display I’ve ever had. They all look so great, there’s very little improvement switching to OLED.

I own 2nd gen iPad Pro 12.9 512gig. I will upgrade if there is no more home button. It's already gone in my iphone X and kinda makes me confusing. Also, I like the idea of having not to worry about reliability of mechanical button anymore.

So

So what would you guys rather have? Same size body of the current 12.9, but make the screen as large as possible, or same size screen as the current 12.9 but make the body as small as possible? I think I’d choose the latter, but only if the corresponding ASK would be just as comfortable to type on.

Speaking of which.. has anyone here typed on the ASK of the 10.5 and the 12.9? Is the 10.5 keyboard really a full-size typing experience?
I’ve been using ASK for the last couple of years, first for my 9.7” and then for my 10.5”. I found the 9.7 to be too cramped, but the 10.5 to be much closer to my Mac keyboard.

Since I have no intention of of upgrading from my 10.5” Pro any time soon, I recently tried some different keyboard/case setups and have now fallen in love with the Zagg Rugged Messenger case. It’s the first non-Apple keyboard case I’ve ever tried with an iPad and I’m really thrilled with it.

I don’t usey Apple Pencil all that much and when I do it’s not for drawing so I’m not really seeing the benefits of promotion but I didn’t buy it for the promotion beside I knew I wouldn’t be drawing (I can’t).

Oled is a big improvement imo.

Fun fact: There is no mechanical button anymore?

All iPads have a mechanical home button as far as I know. Apple never updated their ipad with non mechanical haptic button like ones used in iphone 7 and 8.

I find Face ID to be so accurate and easy that I usually forget I even have it. I just pick up the phone and swipe up. And I am 100% positive that Apple will implement it on iPad in a way that duplicates this somehow.

I purchased my 10.5” iPad Pro in June 2017, but honestly think I may well upgrade if the 2018 models do come with Face ID.

Any others who recently purchased an iPad Pro considering the same? Or would that not be worth it?

I won’t unless the serious un-Pro issues addressed in this article: https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/ipad-pro-app-problem/
are improved. The problems discussed there are mostly my problems as well.

There is no FCPX for iPad Pro. I recently ran into this problem. iMovie is just a toy. It is more like a piece of tissue for dribbling math formula on rather than a pad for long writing.

There is no comparable app to SketchUp on iOS.

Blogging app offers rudimentary features.

Garageband is another toy on iOS.

I am willing to pay for FCPX and Logic Pro for iOS but Apple Computer is not willing to make those products.

I despsise Apple CEO spins iPad Pro as a laptop replacement while ... :-( sigh

Anyone else also hates the ad that has a kid perching on a tree branch, doing an iPad Pro?

So you really do not notice that one second more it takes to swipe up after you look at it??? Literally you could have the Touch ID open before you even had to look at it. Basically instantaneously open as you lift.

Nope. Touch ID on my iPad feels cumbersome now.

There are plenty of apps for iOS that do more “pro” things than the default Apple solutions. Example off the top of my head: I would never use GarageBand for podcasting—Ferrite is way better for recording, editing, and sharing those files. I would never use GarageBand to compose music either, because Notion is so much more fully featured.

In many situations, the “pro” apps you need are out there. Not all situations for all users, but many.
