Apples to oranges, you can't compare. Or should I say, Apple to Intel. The core RAM metric is different due to the M1's unified memory approach. 8 GB should be plenty, especially for an iPad.
I don't know what you were referring to, since you quoted 2 different people, but CPU wise you can absolutely compare iPads to PC in terms of speed, especially for non intensive tasks (which is most of what people do on iPads)

Unified just means memory is shared which makes for very fast access. Sure, there's some deduplication. However, the 10-12GB physical+swap usage I mentioned was with the M1 MBA already. The 500MB-1GB RAM used by specific websites (Safari) were from Activity Monitor. Sadly, webpages have gotten seriously bloated. Mind you, the A12X/Z uses unified memory as well.

This message is from an iPad with 4GB RAM. You've got an extra 2GB of leeway with the 2020 iPad Pro so this page would probably have loaded there instead of crashing. However, open enough tabs and apps and you're still gonna hit reloads unless Apple implements storage-based swap file. 8GB and 16GB RAM gives even more leeway.

I was dispelling the notion that higher RAM equates to higher speed (or less reloading). When comparing intel based PCs/tablets etc., mostly yes. Not so with M1.

Yes, I will be updating to the 2TB 12.9”. I know it is very expensive, but the iPad Pro is the computer I use 95% of the time. There are a number of reasons;
  • My 1TB 2018 iPad Pro is almost full
  • I use mine frequently outside playing music and the extra screen brightness will be more than welcome
  • I use on the move travelling around the world, so 5G will be put to good use
  • I frequently use to watch videos, so the new improved screen will be noticeable with real blacks
  • I use to edit videos, so the faster processor will be used, and the better screen for colour balancing
  • I use for video conferencing so the improved front camera will help
  • As I use to run my business, it is a fully deductible business expense
The iPad Pro is by far my favourite computer device ever. I have had every 12.9” edition since the first in 2015 (except the 2020)

Agreed, but FWIW, I have never seen that screen, and I've had pretty much every iPad since the beginning.

No doubt, there are ways where you can exhaust RAM needed to keep tabs and webpages open. Maybe I haven't had that issue because I only keep tabs open that I need to be current. All I was saying is 8 GM RAM with Intel is not the same as 8 GB with M1.

Maybe quoting me then was not what you indented, since I didn't mention RAM. Anyway, agreed, higher RAM on iPads does not equate higher speed, at least for currently supported iPads, unless you count reloads as slowdowns. More RAM however means less reloads, in general, but not systematically. There is an algorithm in iPadOS which decides when to reload, but nobody outside Apple knows how it works exactly. Having said that it's reasonable to assume that a significant part of the criteria that it takes into account is the amount of RAM, even if, clearly, it's not the only criterium...

wow man, I thought I had a lot by having over half of my 1TB full... Is video editing that fills yours mainly? Or do you leave a lot of offline videos in it?

Probably not. I have a 2020 12.9” iPad Pro 1 TB with cellular. I get great speeds on LTE and I have the magic keyboard and have been very happy with it. I don’t find 5G or the new display tech to be compelling enough to justify the upgrade.

I use my 2018 iPad Pro 11 (64 GB, WiFi) for almost all my casual computing (web, email, video, etc), and as a Roon controller. My MacBook Pro rarely leaves my office desk.

I don't need to upgrade, but I'm thinking about it anyway, since I can get an instant credit for it that's 70% what I paid to begin with. If so I plan to get the new 12.9" 128GB, WiFi.

Nope. I considered it until they said the new M1 iPad wouldn't fit in last years magic keyboard. pay 329 dollars for something you expect to get more then a year out of it...

Where was this said?

Apple will give me $535 in trade-in value for my 2019 12.9-inch iPad Pro. That will be lower come next lineup refresh. Do I trade it in for the new model (that seems like a fair value) or keep the one I have and trade-in at a later refresh?
Be careful. Apple’s trade-in partner Phobio has a reputation recently for telling you of a good trade in value but then finding things wrong with your device after you send it in And reducing the amount drastically. It’s happened to me and others. Take that quote value with a grain of salt.

Apple has since updated the specs stating you need a new magic keyboard with the new iPad.
Suck.

It looks like might be a dealbreaker for me unless they come up with some sort of keyboard trade in deal.

EDIT: Forgot to thank you for the link! Thank you!

It is a lot of video, but also high volume of photos and music recordings. Current usage is 920GB and I am starting to have to delete just to make room for new. In normal times I travel a lot, so like to keep on my device

Wasn’t planning to upgrade my space grey 2020 12.9 4G 256, but got a good trade in offer (not from Apple/Phobio).

Have the new silver M1 12.9 5G 1TB and white MK favorited - ready for pre-order. Couldn’t resist the new XDR display and hopefully the display technology trickles to the new Silicon MBP coming this fall.

I got my 2020 iPad Pro in August of last year, and I’m not planning on upgrading. Sure the miniLED and M1 is cool, but I can’t justify upgrading an 8 month old iPad.

I’ll wait until this iPad is starting to show it’s age to upgrade. Hopefully by then the 11“ will have miniLED and an even more powerful chip than the M1. Even a new redesign.

The 2020 and 2018 iPad Pros are already fast for anything on iPadOS-there’s no reason to upgrade right now unless you really want that display.

I noticed you were planning to buy the white magic keyboard. Note that the black Magic Keyboard holds up bad enough, so I can’t imagine how the White one will hold up. My recommendation is to get the black one. Sure, the white is pretty but it’s gonna look terrible less than 3 months after you buy it.

Ja, thanks for the tip.

I’ve had a the black MK since release and it’s in excellent condition. I primarily use it in the bedroom or den. I’m holding on to it to test compatibility with the new IPP. If it works out I’ll return the white MK until it eventually goes on sale, like a year from now, LOL.

Most of the time I’m on my M1 MBP.

Definitely hesitant about upgrading my 2020 12.9" if we aren't getting any kind of reviews before launch.
Similar situation. Have a 2020 12.9". Have not seen a great reason to upgrade. And with no reviews hard to know if there is a substantial usability difference.

However, I am looking forward to upgrading my 2017 27" iMac. Just waiting . . . .

I also have a 2017 27” iMac (fusion drive). Do you think you will be able to adjust to the smaller screen size?
