In a van down by the river
Im in the same boat as you. I got a 2020 11" last spring and by far the software is the limiting factor for me using it for more serious work. Now if iPadOS has a major redo at dub dub this summer then I will maybe give the new ones a second look but even then new (better) software on my 2020 would be a major boost.
I think we will be fine in skipping this year's hardware update. With the way Apple likes to spec bump everything, I have a feeling iPAdOS isn't going to be a total revamp on par the new hardware.

For now no. I don't see currently an app or a workflow (that is typical for my usage) that would require M1 chip and 8 GB or 16 GB RAM. 6 GB RAM yes, but 16 - no. I have 2018 iPP with 4 GB RAM and for now I have no issues when it comes to power. I do have sometimes issues with apps reload or tabs reload but I doubt that I need 16 GB RAM to fix those issues.

One of the reasons I didn't settle for the 2020 iPad Pro was because I didn't think 6GB is enough to eliminate (or at least drastically reduce) reloads. I'm regularly using 10-12GB on desktop with majority of the RAM going to the web browser. For me, it stands to reason that with desktop-level website support on iPadOS, browser RAM use would be the similar to what I get on desktop.

CPU-wise though, I find even the A9X speedy enough.

This is a good point I had not considered ;). You might be right (I have no proof either way).

Yep, CPU-wise I am not sure that we can even reach its maximum with what we do on those iPads.

Will wait until June/October to see what the software improvements are. If they are decent then yes, I will definitely be upgrading to take advantage of all this power. But I’ve done that three times before and am still waiting for the software improvements, this time I’m waiting.
Indeed - that's the only sensible approach IMHO. And, given Apple's extremely cautious approach, and unwillingness to cannibalize the macBook Air range, the iPadOS software improvements will likely be few and timid.

I have an iPad mini 5 that I use mostly for reading, and iPad Air 4 that I like, but just bought three weeks ago. I also have a 2018 iPad Pro 12.9. I go between the Air and the Pro for marking up documents and other work, and I'm kinda wishing I hadn't bought the Air so I could have purchased a 2021 11 Pro. But - and I will admit this is completely irrational - I'm tempted to sell the 2018 12.9 and get a 2021 just to have the latest and greatest.

I'm pretty miffed if the MGK that I just bought about 3 months ago won't work with this new 12.9 ipad pro, but I will say THIS IPP really does seem to be a bigger leap in capability than the 2020 model before it. I ended up just getting a 2018 12.9 refurb from apple last year, since I didn't really need the cameras or A12 processor. This model MIGHT get me to upgrade if the regular keyboard will still work (my regular use one) and IF maybe the MGK might work in some way even just at office or desktop and not folded and clamshell.

I caved in because of the new display and sold my 2018 pro. I’ll be spending about 400$ cad with taxes to upgrade; new display and double base storage and ram make it reasonable imo

I‘ll wait and see what they announce for iPadOS. The new iPad Pro + Magic Keyboard is more expensive than the MBP 13” M1. For that price I’d like to use it as a full macOS device.

Keeping my 12.9" 3rd gen still running like a champ, I’ll wait for iPadOS 15, it’ll look like a new iPad again running iPadOS 15 lol, mini led is nothing more than a gimmick, put the mini led iPad next to the current 2020 iPad doubt you’ll even notice a difference browsing safari using apps or watching YouTube. ?‍♂️

iPadOS will also come to the 2018/2020 iPad Pros will it not?

How will iPadOS be any better on the 2021 iPads compared to those of the last 3 years?

2020 11” owner. Previously had the 2018 11”. I will upgrade to the M1 model if the software comes along to make it superior. Right now there are minimal differences between the two latest 11” models.

If they add MacOS capability, yes. If not, I’ll sell my 2018 12.9”, get a MacBook Air and an iPad Mini. I’m tired of the limitation of PadOS. Even with modest needs, it suffers. I need parity in MS Office suite and a better implementation of Safari. Even the “desktop” version of PadOS Safari doesn’t operate the same as Mac and PC browsers. I am a cloud based, database programmer and I can’t do the things I need in the iPad Safari.

I won’t even get into the half-hearted attempt of a file management system.

I will miss my Apple Pencil for photo editing on the go…

But, I’ve bought 3 versions of the biggest iPad Pro waiting for great software. I’m tired of waiting.

exactly, I have the A9X 12.9 and the maxed out A12X 11 pro with 6GB RAM, and I still use the first more because I like the larger screen, and it's fast enough. Now the iPad air 2 or the mini 4, they are painfully slow for me, but A9X and above I really don't mind, they are all fast enough that I almost don't care... it's like if the ipad air 2 were the atom/celeron computer, the A9X is the dual core i7 and the A12X is the quad core i7 (which is actually what they really are in terms of speed). Quad core i7 is faster sure, but dual core i7 is still so good that unless you do video editing most people don't really care... especially for iPad workflows

Nope. I considered it until they said the new M1 iPad wouldn't fit in last years magic keyboard. pay 329 dollars for something you expect to get more then a year out of it...

This killed it for me, too. I was okay with eating a year’s depreciation by selling my 2020 iPP 12.9”, but having to buy a new MK as well is beyond ridiculous. The 2020 still absolutely flies, and is super-capable. I don’t use it for photography; all my videoconferencing is up close, so I would gain nothing from “Center Stage.”

I started out saying no way to upgrade 2020 11 inch. I tried the 12.9 last year but returned it after a short span since I had a laptop already. I also bought an M1 MacBook Pro. However, my work provides a MBP and I really don’t use mine much outside of rare photo editing sessions.
So, I think I’m going to sell the M1 MBP and 2020 11 inch IPP to get the 12.9 cellular with 256Gb (16Gb is overkill on M1 IMO). I will basically use it for work notes and my laptop replacement solution- as a lawyer, that’s some pdf editing, word processing, and photography on the side but I really hate editing and more like the taking process. Originally I had windows/M1 to play certain games but I have a series X and Nintendo switch to cover those needs. Anyone in similar boat?

Apples to oranges, you can't compare. Or should I say, Apple to Intel. The core RAM metric is different due to the M1's unified memory approach. 6GB should be plenty for an iPad.

It was a maybe to replace my 2018 until I learned that it isn’t compatible with the magic keyboard. At which point it became a no. Didn’t pay £350 for it only to be of use for a few months.

I have decided on a "wait and see" approach. I have a 2018 IPP with a folio keyboard. The new iPad as spectacular as the hardware upgrades are - won't "do" anything that my 2018 IPP can't do (except the wide angle tracking on front camera). *IF* WWDC brings surprise capabilities that are limited to the M1/8GB+ iPads (like Logic Pro) then I will upgrade since I use LP on my Mac. I am, however, upgrading the folio keyboard to the Magic Keyboard so it will feel like a new iPad regardless for a while.

Buying a MK is beyond ridiculous. FTFY :p

Sorry, I had to. I don't understand how anyone can justify spending £350 on a janky ass keyboard and not a proper mouse. No no no no no :D

Wait and see for me too (until WWDC). New new substantial features = no buy. Simple. Deep down I am hoping iPad OS receives minor updates, just to save me £1k...
