I can't explain it, my expectation is thermal throttling happening on a CPU level where it's refusing more power until it cools down.

The types of testing here both load the CPU to near full power so in terms of endurance / temperature testing it shouldn't have a huge impact.
that could be... I have no idea why, but it did look weird.
Could you maybe try a short run of 5 min to see if there is any initial impact?

Being strong or weak makes no difference when it comes to comfort. Silly argument.

We are talking about reality here. Can you carry an additional pound of weight or not? If a child can carry a pound of weight, if a short, weak female can carry an extra 6 lbs of weight on her upper body, not to mention a tool belt which probably adds an equal amount of weight, you, as an adult male (unless disabled) can carry an additional pound of weight.

That is ridiculous. We’re talking about added, not total weight. Besides, what friggin clothes and keys are you carrying if they weigh 3kg, ffs.

Weigh yourself in the morning. Then weigh yourself with clothes plus anything you normally carry in your pockets. Get back to me.

I’m talking about the weight difference between Queen6’s 2.8kg Asus laptop and a 1.8kg 15” MacBook Pro. At least read the posts if you are going to use them for ridicule.

That's still only 2 lbs.

Look at the examples above. How are you able to walk around with 5 extra lbs of clothes, keys, wallet, cell phone without being in agony all day?

How are hikers and backpackers able to hike 12 miles a day for days, weeks, or months at a time with 30 lbs packs?

This is because a normal adult of average strength can easily carry a laptop whether it weighs 2 lbs or 8 lbs.

This guy does MBP 2017 vs. 2018 and the 2018 wins in this case. FCPX in 4K with 20min encode. The 2017 had Mojave on it vs. High Sierra on the 2018.

I ran some more detailed tests today.

It throttles. It throttles very badly on default / automatic fans. It's not very bad on max speed.

If you check the description I recorded both tests and uploaded those, so you can watch them side by side in real time.

I had to register just for this post. Thank you so much, Aea! I´ve been waiting for this video for days now! So your video just confirmed that the MacBook 15inch 2018 is capable to run the i9 with base clock speeds. Apple hopefully adjusts the fan speed and unnecessary throttling via software update. It would be very interesting to see the results of Cinebench R15 (run 3-5 times) and Geekbench when the fan speed is set to the highest. Could you do that?

Sorry for my language, I am from Germany!

And yet they throttle when they are used for more than a couple of minutes.

Like every laptop that size. It's still really fast, and used by professionals in various fields around the world. Unless you're on these forums. Here, it's basically a fashion accessory wrapped up in a children's toy.

Hah this is awesome. Bought an i9 3 days ago and already sold my original laptop.

What to do..

Yes, I don't know how a few of these % of benchmark scores will let you sleep at night.

Jesus youtube is it necessary to have 4 ad break in an 11 minute video? I'm notpaying any heed to the ads you know!

Your English is fine. I’ll do this test when I get home.

The problem for me personally is that it can't seem to hold its base speed. I expected the throttling to happen in the 2.9 to 4.8 range; as in it would only be able to very shortly hit the 4.8Ghz when required and then slow downwards to 2.9. I did not expect that it would slow down below the 2.9Ghz and, even worse, do this consistently where it may not hit the 2.9Ghz for some time. I guess I'll wait it out some more and bring this one back.

They listen but they are absolutely obsessed with releasing the lightest and thinnest portable lines (im)possible. Functionality is not a priority.

So, this is a failure both on the part of intel and on apple's part for inadequate testing before release.

Newsflash: none of this matters since apple just released some new emoji's! Yaaay!

Are Apple and Intel working together so that there is at least some minimal communication about minimum standards for cooling: re, brand and amount of thermal past, necessity of heat sinks, dimensions of an enclosure?

These two companies must have had an ongoing, working partnership, at least informally for several decades now. I'm not saying design flaws can be totally avoided, but they should be minimized or very infrequent on a 3rd revision.

If it's not clear already, let me make it so: EVERY APPLE LAPTOP IS A THROTTLED MACBOOK. THERE IS NO PRO LINE AND THERE ARE NO PRO MODELS.

This amount of screeching for attention...

Here are my results, i9, 32/512/560X, prime95 ~5 min torture test.

That's with fans set to auto right? ... no manual control setting them to max?

Can you see what happens when you compress something in Adobe Media Encoder or Premiere? That's a stress test but how about a real world one... what happens to the base clock?

Yes auto fan, fresh outa the box. Sadly I don't have either of those software to test :(, only thing I have is photoshop.

This looks great, right?! Thanks for doing this.

I'm sure others have seen this as well, but this is the first sentence of the introduction for the Intel Power Gadget:

"Intel® Power Gadget is a software-based power usage monitoring tool enabled for Intel® Core™ processors (from 2nd Generation up to 7th Generation Intel® Core™ processors)."

If I'm not mistaken the new Mac's are using Intel's 8th generation, so there may be some issues there as well.

I noticed that earlier when I looked up the Intel Power Gadget.

zshane1125, thank you for sharing this with us. I think the result looks really good. I think we need a 30 min torture test to disprove those throttling videos on youtube.

It is interesting that you have different results than Aea, because there was no short time throttling to 0.8 Ghz.

How is your MacBook in idle ? Are the fans on or loud? How is battery life (only if you used it for some days now)?

Could you also run Geekbench and Cinebench R15 CPU test3-5 times in a row? This is very interesting because in Cinebench the i9 had bad results on notebookcheck.com. Of course it is important to see what the Intel Power Gadget shows us.
