Here is another review of fortnite on the MacBook Pro

Thanks for the video. So yea, in short he mentioned:

1. Fortnite is not running on Metal yet on Mac OS even though it was advertised as a metal game in one of the previous WWDCs. It is currently poorly optimized.

2. Apple advertised that Fortnite will see a boost in performance when an eGPU is connected... but Fortnite is not even detecting the eGPU on Mac OS! (False advertising, or Apple got a word from Epic and Epic hasn’t pushed an update yet)

3. The Apple branded eGPU is of course not compatible with Windows Bootcamp so essentially the most useless eGPU enclosure in the market

Dell xps 15, such a tempting machine, but ridden with issues. I can't afford to get stuck with a faulty machine. Personally, don't have any luck with windows machines. Otherwise, it will be a easy pick over macbook pro.

Gaming benchmarks on Bootcamp (power limit using Intel XTU as Apple’s patch doesn’t affect Bootcamp yet) according to this video:

Actually not bad at all. Never expect the 560X to do this good.

Here's something interesting. I am now stuck on 800mhz. My mouse is teleporting, and my typing is delayed enough to notice. This is the second time today this has happened waking from sleep.

Ugh.

I remember typing somewhere in the forums that I wouldn't mind if Apple takes their time (but not too long of course) in bringing out a fixing covering all corners. Maybe, just maybe this might be caused by the update. Hopefully this is an isolated case.

With everything that you have been playing around (voltage, fans etc) on your new MacBook Pro, is there something you might have missed removing? or maybe a setting on those apps that you haven't reverted to default?

That or I just merced a component. Going to go for an os reinstall as soon as I figure out if it's okay.
[doublepost=1532578067][/doublepost]Looks like it might cap CPU to 800MHz when you're critically low on power?

Mine went from reporting 100% battery to 5% in the span of a few minutes. **** me.

Too many odd things happening. Reset and re-image back to factory settings if you can. Good luck.

Fortnite has always ran like a garbage on macOS. The game itself is the root of the problem.

Exactly. It's very poorly adapted to macOS.

I can run Tomb Raider, Call of Duty MW3, GRID on my base model MBP 13'' 2016 and Fortnite which is a much more mobile-looking game doesn't even start up.

So it's not always Apple's fault. Unfortunately the game industry still has poor technical adaptation/ optimization for Macs.

To be honest it’s Apple’s fault for wasting stage time during WWDC doing them a free advertisement during the Metal announcement. It is been what, 3 years now? And it is not on Metal yet on Mac OS.

What issues? I was considering this a little while ago, and for the most part, throttling was the major issue with the 2017 and 2018 models.

Most of the issues are QA related, so things like the bezels or trackpad glued/aligned incorrectly and/or various finish issues. Some have also experience screen bleed. Understandably, this really rubs people the wrong way when paying a premium to see such defects.

Other than the throttle stuff, there is also the longstanding issue of Dell using the Killer WiFi card, which is vastly inferior to the Intel equivilant - alas it is user replaceable. I can say from experience the Killer WiFi is pretty unreliable, which is ironic as it used to be targetted to gamers. Some have also noted ghosting as an issue on the 4K panel. Coil whine seems to be an issue a lot of people note on XPS lines too.

Then there is the issue of having to remove bloatware/having driver issues with Dell causing AppCrash. Again, it is generally resolvable.

The users are quite tinker-happy and most seem to be happy to repaste, undervolt etc to get the most of the laptop. So if you don't like tinkering, you could end up with undesirable issues. I guess the general theme has been it is like a laptop lottery to get a nice machine.

This thread has become one Epic Story !! So what is the conclusion ?? There aren't many reports coming in after the patch released by Apple for the Throttle Gate !! please don't point me to Dave Lee !! I have had enough of him for this entire week. Can anyone else confirm ? if the Throttle Gate issue has been resolved or is it still waiting for impeachment by the Congress !! lol !!

It is on Metal. In fact, from what I know it won't even start if you don't have a GPU with Metal support.

It’s been patched it was a simple firmware bug.

Yeah you compiled the issues nicely. If you are lucky enough to get a good machine without faults, you are golden, can knock the macbook pro out of the park any day, otherwise it is bad. Some of the issues like coil whine worsens over time, most of the users have experienced it after 2 or 3 months using the laptop and then the sound becomes unbearable over time. I know macbook pros have lots of issues as well but it is the probability of getting those and how you they handle the service that matters. If any competitor has better quality laptop with a given specs, it would be an easy decision to switch from the macs

I've been running into the same problem. It's happened 4 times now on my new i9 MacBook Pro. The CPU frequency decreases to 800mhz, and the battery goes from over 50% charged and plugged in, and then when I unplug, down to 0%. I've installed the supplemental patch and reinstalled OSX from a clean slate. Nothing clear in the logs.

All the while, `kernel_task` spikes to around 800% CPU.

You actually can't undervolt even in Bootcamp on MBP 2016 and newer. He just changed the power limit using Intel XTU. When you look closely, undervolting options in the video are grayed out and can't be changed. This is locked on the BIOS level and have yet to figure a way to change it.

If there's a way anyone knows about, please share.

Cheers

Thanks for the clarification. You are right.

Look at that CPU temp! 130 degrees C? Youch. I think that's your problem. I don't think the CPU is getting that hot. I think the temp sensor is bad. I am by no means an expert but I saw Louis Rossman fixing a mac laptop where the temp sensor had failed and he mentioned that they show as 130 degrees C or similar when failed.

I think if the CPU had actually gotten that hot it would have burned out or shut itself off before that happened.

Anyway contact Apple. They should fix it or replace it for free.
