Well.. this is exactly why I skipped this iPad and went ahead ordered the refurbished 128GB 2017 iPad LTE version... it. Is in huge discount right now. Apple is trying to clear the house now.

Under Steve's management, we got the best and the latest. Not anymore.

The more I read, the more seem to be that the IPP 2018 won't be out until this Fall. I am considering to exchange the IPP 12.9 2017 wifi space gray to LTE gold model and stop reading news about new IIPP until few years later. Hopefully by that time, somebody more customer-oriented will have replaced Tim.

No.. if Apple want to make a iPad that going to support Apple PenciL, they better put laminated display on that iPad. The noise when you tap the display is lot louder than one with laminated display. If you constantly poking the pen to the display, you will constant hear the noise. Secondly, imagine you are write on a piece of paper and you put a thin glass on top. This iPad is exactly like that.

You kidding me? 2GB is. Not sufficient enough at this stage. Let me show you how many Jetstream event I got on my iPad.

Jetstream event triggers when iPad has low memory. With so many Jetstream events, it clear to me that 2GB is no longer sufficient

Again, for you. Clearly this isn't the iPad for you.

They will do it in the 2019 or 2020 upgrade! Their strategy is consistent. Even they can use the latest components to make good products, they make something less good on purpose. Then, update later. There are people who upgrade their devices every year.

I am getting fed up with Apple under Tim's management.

I think there are VERY few people who upgrade their iPad every year. Schools definitely don't! Not many people even update their phones that often unless they are in an annual upgrade program.

You are missing the point. This iPad is not worthy of upgrade as some people think. It is just a spec bump with Apple Pencil.

To think 2GB is enough is laughable. Not long ago people here think 1GB is enough, but it is clearly not. Apple is still releasing product with 2GB RAM is, 2 OS upgrade, you iPad is almost unusable. iOS 11 is already struggle with 2GB RAM. There is reason Apple throw 3GB RAM on iPhone 8 Plus and 4GB on iPad Pro.

Also.. Apple is releasing a half baked iPad and leave something for future upgrade. This is just pure for making people upgrade.

Like I said, this iPad has no laminated display. You will clear audible noise when you poking that Apple Pencil to the screen, let along with super reflective display. Apple can do better, they can put laminated display on the iPad, but they choose not too.

No argument from me about the laminated display, but it seems like it's always been the processor that has determined the longevity of iOS devices more than the RAM. Apple seems to add RAM based on the needs of the device. For instance, the iPhone 7+ and 8+ have 3GB of RAM, whereas the 7 and 8 have 2GB, presumably because they're pushing fewer pixels and don't have more demanding dual cameras to support. The extra 1GB is compensation for the demands of these features. The performance of the these devices and their respective non-plus counterparts is non-distinguishable, and they will no doubt receive the same number of OS updates. The Pro having 4GB of RAM is mostly likely because of supporting the more demanding display resolution/size, as well as pro-motion, and the fact that Apple expects/hopes that people will use it as a laptop replacement, thus demanding more multitasking.

The longest surviving iPad so far is the iPad Air 2. It is the first iPad to get 2 GB RAM.

I'm predicting the next iPad non-Pro will get more than 2 GB RAM. However, it's quite possible that won't happen until 2020. No guarantee that they will release a new iPad in 2019.

Depends on what you're updating from. This a pretty good upgrade for anyone still on iPad Air or older and aren't willing to spend a lot to upgrade.

For the more demanding, there's currently the iPad Pro 10.5. That's the model with the bells and whistles - fully laminated display, ProMotion, TrueTone, HDR, 4GB RAM, etc.

Hey @rui no onna, I often find myself agreeing with your posts and you're definitely quite knowledgeable. All things considered, what do you think about upgrading to this iPad from a Mini 4?

I am relatively new to iPad. Why people on this thread seems not to be interested in the just announced iPad 9.7 2018? Compared with the iPad PRO I have, it is much cheaper yet be able to work with the Apple Pencil and have the same battery life. Seems to be a pretty good deal if you are not looking for the fastest which apps probably can't take advantage of. Am I missing something?
No, you're not. The Apple Pencil on the el cheapo iPad is the killer feature of 2018 and if anybody doesn't see the value in that then it's not for their needs. This is classic Apple. Segment the market with a posh feature until market peaks then move the posh feature to the product that the unwashed masses would purchase. It's Apple gold.

It is good upgrade, consider Mini 4 aging A8X chips. Though... if you want save some money, you can always pick up refurbished 2017 from Apple. It is in good discount currently. You can pick 128GB iPad 2017 for 309 dollars... this is significant saving for about 120 dollar cheaper.

Someone aren’t willing to spend lot to upgrade, refurbished iPad 2019 is one should be pick up. $309 for 128GB is steal.

I guess it depends on how the Mini 4 is performing for you? Going from Mini 4 (A8) to iPad 6th gen (A10) is definitely a significant bump in performance objectively speaking, more so than Air 2 (A8X) to iPad 6th gen (A10). How it translates to real-world depends on your usage.

I have a Mini 4 (iOS 10) and for what I use it (ebooks and manga with very occasional web browsing to check something on Wikipedia or Amazon), the chipset is more than fast enough. My general use iPad is a Pro 9.7 (iOS 10). I don't notice much of a performance difference between the two (or even the 2nd gen Pro 12.9) but that's likely because I don't really do anything particularly demanding on the Mini. I've had the Pencil for almost two years but honestly, even when I managed to misplace it for a couple months or more, I never really missed it.

I am, however, toying with the idea of getting the 2018 iPad for evaluating iOS 11, lol. :p

Actually, the Mini 4 has an A8, not A8X.
Even at a discount I wouldn't buy last generation's device, especially since the A9 is only 1 year newer than the "aging" chip in my current device, and one day I might actually want to take advantage of Pencil support.

If I may ask, why have you not updated to iOS 11, even on your Pro? I always keep my devices up to date. My Mini 4 is running well enough on 11.2, but having played around with the 2017 iPad, I definitely noticed smoother performance even with the A9. Also, since getting a plus sized iPhone I think I'd like to try a larger iPad so that there's more of a distinction between my phone and tablet.

Wasn't a fan of the dock when I tried the iOS 11 Beta. Iirc, also had some other annoyances with iOS 11 although I've forgotten what they are now. Probably had to do with either multitasking/gestures or the Files app.

Problem is updates are a one-way street so I'm reluctant to update my daily driver until I know I'll be satisfied with the new firmware. Unfortunately, having had bad experiences with performance degradation on iOS updates, no one else in the family wants to volunteer their iPads as guinea pig for iOS 11. :p

I have no problems using iOS 11 as a daily driver on my iPad Air 2. In fact, iOS 11 is my favourite version of iOS.

BTW, when the first release version of an iOS version is released you can upgrade and then downgrade if you wish. You usually have a few days before Apple stops signing the OS.

Mind you, this doesn't give a great test of the OS, because iOS x.0 is usually the slowest and buggiest version.

This is what I get several times now

With unresponsive dock, constant Bluetooth problem... When iOS 11 works, it plays well, but there are so many hiccups... so,stoke you get annoyed.

True. Im from Montreal

Greetings... I am from Ontario...With our low Canadian Dollar, iPad isn’t as cheap as it seems in Canada. 32GB WiFi is 429... seems lot to ... therefore, I went to refurbished iPad

I haven't seen the above problem at least not recently. Rotation issues did occur with iOS 11.0 though.

The biggest issue I have with iOS 11 is inconsistent tethering from my iPhone 7 Plus over WiFi. To make it work every time, I toggle off an on Personal Hotspot on my phone and then toggle off and on WiFi on my iPad. Then it works.

This rotation issue doesn’t happen a lot... few time since iOS 11 release. My main annoyance is iPad will not connect to Bluetooth keyboard randomly. I have to pair manually and sometime it take a minute for the keyboard to responsive. The iPad recognize and connect to the iPad, but when you press the key, nothing happens. Unless I restart the iPad.

Indeed. I'm still on the iPad 3 I bought six years ago, which still holds up surprisingly well for most purposes.

You must have amazing patience. There were times when I was using an iPad 3 (iOS 8) that I was pretty tempted to just throw it against the wall.

128GB LTE is 719 plus 13% tax is pretty darn expensive. I ordered refurbished one for about 514 plus tax. Huge saving. I have iPad Pro... Never used Apple Pencil once. DomDo care about Apple Pencil... Price is the reason for me opt for 2017 iPad...514 dollars is even cheaper than 128GB Wifi only.

I'm a Canadian as well! At least as a teacher I get $30 off. I also think that I can get a decent price selling my Mini 4, so getting the new iPad shouldn't cost me too much in the end.

You guys might want to consider a cross border run for these things. When I was living in a small Ontario town right on the border for a year not long ago, that was a weekly event for many. Gas and other small items mainly, but the differences could be huge.

So has anyone ordered and seen it ship yet? I believe they said that they would start shipping and appearing in stores late this week, and tomorrow is a holiday.

My building concierge has just signed for mine, according to the tracking... (UK-based) Ordered on launch day as it replaces an ipad 2 and an ipad mini 1....
