Radeon High Side wattage is normal, and so is everything else. I'd suggest you keep using it, perhaps it's still doing housekeeping tasks like analyzing photos for duplicates/faces.

You could check Activity Monitor > CPU > View > All Processes. There may be some processes going on with double digit %. It will very likely settle down over the coming few hours/days, just let them run. Note that it's a bit of a Schrödinger's cat situation: when you start looking, the processes disappear. They're designed to run when the computer is idle. Result: Fans can run at 3000 RPM during idle. That is to be expected.

You've already verified that there's no dGPU excess wattage via this screen shot, so if I were you, I'd uninstall iStat and stop worrying. Don't mess with the fan profiles. Just wait and let it do its thing. Then check back in a week. :)

Thanks for the explanation.I tried cinebench and heaven benchmarks scores seems ok but fan spins at 4-5k rpms least 7-8 mins more after i close the benchmark. Is this also normal?I mean temperatures looks normal but fans keep spinning

That's normal too. They ramp up slowly, and then they ramp down slowly.

Sure, no excess wattage, but his fans are still spinning too fast.

I am experiencing this issue in a big way and have had no luck working with Apple. Had a case going with the senior techs and engineers and they deemed it to be "Normal behavior". Absolute BS. I'm a music producer using Logic Pro and this thing has been a mess for my studio setup. Fans constantly running at 90+% as soon as I open Logic and oftentimes even when I'm just using Safari (I quit using Chrome) It's in clamshell mode connected to an external monitor most of the time, but I occasionally open it up to have a dual screen...fans are screaming 24/7.

vNRkb6j.jpg

I have the 16" MBP with the following specs:
2.4GHz 8‑core 9th‑generation Intel Core i9 processor, Turbo Boost up to 5.0GHz
AMD Radeon Pro 5500M with 4GB of GDDR6 memory
64GB 2666MHz DDR4 memory
1TB SSD storage

Plugged into an ASUS278Q external monitor

I'm currently leaving feedback with Apple daily... really not sure how to remedy this problem but its driving me CRAZY. The computer is very warm to the touch, too.

I have the same one as you (except less RAM), but use Cubase, and even on my prior 2015 15” - just having the DAW open would cause the fans to start running. I do think considering it’s an i9 with the laptops dimensions, it’s expected behavior. Your temps look to be in F, when they’re usually in C, so your cpu temps seem to be around 60s C, which seems okay to me, and your fans seem to be doing their job.

Anyway, all my stuff is midi/virtual instruments, the laptops about 4-5’ away (and behind one of my monitors since I use 2 4K’s), and composing/mixing is done through headphones.

I would also check your activity monitor and make sure no errant processes are running, or another resource intensive app isn’t running along with your DAW. But yeah..seems normal to me.

Thanks for the reply! I also had an 2015 MBP with midrange specs prior to this. The fans almost never came on, unless I was running a very VERY heavy session in Logic. Now, the fans kick on to 90+% minutes after the machine boots up and stay on the entire time. That is not normal. It doesn't happen when I'm working without an external monitor...problem is, I need an external for my sessions. The only program (occasionally) running alongside Logic is Safari. Is there any errant processes in particular that I should look out for? It is also quite warm to the touch, especially above the touch bar.

So you're saying - when you restart the machine, the fans come on and stay on, even when you don't start anything? If that's the case, start Activity Monitor, go to CPU, and sort by CPU % - to try and find out what's causing that.

As far as processes to look for, it depends what you have installed / running, but look for what's consuming a high CPU percentage in Activity Monitor.

I'm using two 4k LG monitors (with a CalDigit TS3+ dock) and my laptop in clamshell mode. Both monitors at 3360x1890 - and the machine is silent with Safari, even with running a ubuntu VM in Parallels. Anyway, I opened Logic up, ran a small project with 4 VSTs (a Keyscape piano, emotional Violin/Viola/Cello), and playing 12 bars on cycle repeat for the past 15-20 min (non are frozen/bounced), and just two strips with stock reverb/eq -

The fans sounded as soon as I opened Logic, and I'm guessing are now around 1-2 levels bellow max volume..probably high 3000-low to mid 4000 rpm if I had to guess (I deleted iStat and don't want to get drawn back in to stat watching)).

To be honest, I think this performance on a laptop of this size / spec is great.

Heres my activity monitor during cycle repeat if you want to compare:

I got my i7 5600M model today. After install latest version of iStat Menu, it shows only one temperature sensor for the SSD. Not sure why. Emailed technical support.
I installed Temp Monitor, and it shows GPU power 6.7W for internal + LG5k, and 4.3W for LG5k only in clamshell mode.

Are u using left TB3 ports to connect external monitor? If yes - its known issue with left TB3 ports, try to reconnect monitor to the right side. As for me, I have i9 2.4Ghz 32Gb Ram 5600m and with external Samsung monitor 3840x1200@120Hz, I have next results on browsing mode. Also I have turned off TurboBoost, but in case of browsing - there is no difference in temperatures with TurboBoost on or off.

So I ran into a weird situation where:
  1. My laptop was not plugged in
  2. It was not connected to an external monitor
  3. It was not using dedicated graphics
  4. None of the temperatures we're considerably high
  5. Kernal task wasn't at a high percentage (I think it was around 20%)
  6. Fans were at max
...And the CPU still throttled to 1GHz. At this point, I don't even know what's going on. What really sucked is that every time I try to use my LG 5K2K monitor I get throttled to 1GHz sometimes 800MHz, but my friend using his Macbook Pro 13' which is a few years old was able to use the monitor for the whole day without any problems.

MacBook 16' Specs:
  • 2.4GHz 8-core 9th-generation Intel Core i9 processor, Turbo Boost up to 5.0GHz
  • AMD Radeon Pro 5500M with 8GB of GDDR6 memory
  • 64GB 2666MHz DDR4 memory
  • 1TB SSD storage

Given the temps, no issues with the fan coming on?
Yeah, fan speed at minimum (below 2000) when system is idle or light tasks. When dropbox sync a lot of files, it can still runs very hot.

I also tested with 2 external monitor, Dell ultra wide 38" plus Old mac 2560x1440, GPU power 7.5W.

So 5600M works as expected.

The one I returned with i9 and 5500M 8GB, GPU will run at 18-20W (and fan speed >3k) when open cover and connect to an external monitor.

I'm not suggesting you to try out this solution (a bit dangerous), but this thread on reddit might help you troubleshoot the problem (low cpu temp, but still throttled).

You’re still under warranty, right? That sounds like a defect. What happened before that, what took it there? I’ve seen this 1 or 3 times on a hot (ambient temp) day, when the cooling system ran out of capacity, I was purposefully stressing the laptop hard. It never happened in other scenarios, even before I bought the eGPU. I bought it to make the office quiet, and for extra performance with multiple displays.

Do you also see kernel_task consuming all of the CPU when that happens, in Activity Monitor > CPU > View > All Processes? That’s what throttling looks like, along with 1 GHz limit.

Apple Support will probably ask you to clean-install, and if that doesn‘t help, bring it for a repair. If this happens all by itself after a clean install, it indeed could be a bad thermal paste somewhere, or a blocked air channel, but I would not even consider opening the Mac during warranty / AppleCare.
