The problem with Low power mode is it also throttle CPU.
Apple should provide an LPM option to only limit GPU idle power without affecting CPU performance.

You should really get an M1 dude. They're great!
This topic was already discussed here. But if you missed that posts, Monterey “fixed” issue and dropped GPU wattage from 18 to 14/15 watts. Also if you turn on low power mode in settings, you get 6-8 watts for GPU with external displays attached. I use 2 external displays with lid open and get 6-7 watts on GPU.Looks like Monterey somehow fix this issue a little bit. But I was afraid while updating macOS, heard some of macs had been killed by this update (may be it's fake, don't know). Also, Radeon High Side is still at 16W, but temperature is lower and fans don't make much noise. Or may be, it's because of winter and low room temperature
Have MBP 16" base model (with lid opened) + external monitor (FHD) connected by adapter type-c => HDMI.
I already did, dude! I bought a 10 core 14" M1 Pro for my cousin, and played around for a week, tested Mathematica and scientific computing on it. Thanks but no thanks. My 2019 16" Intel i9 MacBook is twice as fast. I'll hold on to my i9 MacBook for as long as I can, and will switch to a Surface Laptop Studio for teaching with a stylus and coding with CUDA on the Nvidia GPU. I have absolutely no use for the M1. A Fischer Price laptop is more useful to me.You should really get an M1 dude. They're great!

There were a few suggestions:@firetrap
Did you somehow manage to get full CPU performance with LPM? I know you've tried some tweaks with system files but I don't know how it turned out. Thx fot the answer!
I've tried but honestly i didn't tried all my options because the other options about trying to "crack" the kext file was to risky for me at this time. This is my working machine and i can't risk being a full day restoring system and reinstalling all my stuff.@firetrap

I think i've the technical knowledge just not the time and i can't take the risk right now for the reasons above. There were a few suggestions:
Replace GPU kext with cracked version that always set the LPM flag to true
Changed kext settings to change GPU max power state
Flashing the GPU with modified bios that changed memory clock
However none of us has the courage and technical knowledge to try this
I connected my late 2013 13" to a 4k screen, using a Mini-DP cable. The best I managed to get is 4k@52hz, but the laptop is virtually silent. How comes yours was so loud?I went from a maxed out 2019 16 inch to a maxed out 14 inch M1 Pro and couldn't be happier. So far it's been completely silent with my typical workflow connected to a 4K screen. That's the laptop I've been waiting for! Unfortunatelly Apple released it 2 years late and I couldn't hold on to my late 2013 MBP any longer because... you've guessed it, it was even louder connected to a 4K screen.
My older 2015 mbp 13 is also silent most of the time even with 2x 4k monitor and open lid.I connected my late 2013 13" to a 4k screen, using a Mini-DP cable. The best I managed to get is 4k@52hz, but the laptop is virtually silent. How comes yours was so loud?
I had a 15" one with a dedicated GPU (NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M) and was able to get full 60Hz. So must be because of the dGPU.I connected my late 2013 13" to a 4k screen, using a Mini-DP cable. The best I managed to get is 4k@52hz, but the laptop is virtually silent. How comes yours was so loud?
except that they run iPad OS induced apps and emoji thingsYou should really get an M1 dude. They're great!
That makes sense, I read about the dGPU being so loud while on external displays.I had a 15" one with a dedicated GPU (NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M) and was able to get full 60Hz. So must be because of the dGPU.
FWIW, the 2019 16" Macbook Pro had the Radeon Pro 5500M.
In my experience, it runs fairly cool and quiet without an external monitor unless you are doing CPU-intensive work.Hi guys, how is 2019 mb pro 16inch if not being connected to external display? Still heat issues and constantly high soeed fans? And does it matter whether it is i7/5300 or i9/5900 config?
I actually can’t use mine on the lap for web dev task. Mine is i9/5500 and runs hot by itself.Hi guys, how is 2019 mb pro 16inch if not being connected to external display? Still heat issues and constantly high soeed fans? And does it matter whether it is i7/5300 or i9/5900 config?
