LPM may be still necessary in 12.3 if you need a silent machine for a not CPU intensive workflow. The radeon wattage is finally fixed, but without LPM the CPU turboboost cause high CPU temperature pikes (70-90C) which will ramp up the fan.

Another option to switch LPM off and use some utility to disable turboboost (turboboost switcher?)

Just as writing this comment my machine suddenly ramped up the fan from 2100 to 4500 RMP, because a CPU spike caused 80C CPU temperature, so we have a new enemy...

This is so awesome! I love my MBP16 with 5500 and I do not plan to switch to M1 anytime soon, this is so good!
I confirm, it is fixed, with lid open and connected to lg 1440p @60hz and lpm disabled it hovers around 6W and 50C at idle!
As I said from the beginning it was drivers! ;P

PS. I will still use the eGPU for heavy animation work though!

This doesn’t sound right. With my machine, fans react pretty directly to longer high workloads. When the workload goes down, the fans go down soon after. Short CPU hikes don’t affect my fans much.

I can only repeat myself, maybe it helps:

Another reason for your heat problem might be dirt in your machine. If you have used your MacBook for some time with fans constantly running at high speeds, chances are that more dust than usual was accumulated. Cleaning the inside has helped some users before, including me.

Oh yes, my MacBook Pro 16 inch is running way cooler than before after the update to 12.3. I can finally disabled LPM when on power.

Too bad this took Apple so long but on the otherhand; I was not planning in switching to M1 anyways.

It's typical. I was waiting fot this 2.5 years without any hope so switched to M1 Pro a few weeks ago. Now I am dealing with disconnecting my USB peripherals and waiting for an Apple's fix again. 😀
omg, it will never ends. They should stop rolling out new macOS version each year and just use one full cycle to stabilise and fix Monterey...

I still have this issue but only when the external monitor is running 120hz... a shame but at least its working properly if all frequencies are the same across all connected monitors

Seeing everyone say that the new OS update fixed the issue, but I still seem to be having it. Is the issue fixed with LPM off for you guys?

I'm currently running in clamshell mode going out to 1 4k LG 27UL650 and 1 Acer 1080P display. Both at 60Hz. My GPU with LPM off hovers between 15.5-18W. My temperature at idle is between 135F-145F.

Seems to be fixed with both LPM on and off.

Using a thunderbolt adapter instead of a plain usb-c adapter (the official apple one is just usb-c to hdmi) might help if you still have issues.

Now that I sold my machine and bought a windows laptop, the finally fixed it? That must be a joke, right?
Anyways... my new windows machine works fine, doesn't do such stupid crap and has more power than the 16" could ever dream of.

Still good to see them fixing it... even though they claimed "works as designed"... and how long it took them.

Yep and they looked at the drivers because of macOS 12.3 and had AMD GPU drivers updated because they were adding Metal support to Blender. Otherwise, they would have forgotten the 16" Intel even existed.

Well your windows machine better smoke the 16", it had a **** CPU and GPU from the start.

It's funny though how bad the Intel 16" laptop was. Run Blender, Cinebench and a 4k youtube video and the fans would sound like a jet.

The 2021 16" can do all that at the same time and more and does not even break a sweat running dual 4K 120hz monitors. The fans don't come on like a jet and it does not get hot like the Intel 16" above the keyboard.

Right now the Intel 16" still goes to 18-20 watts while running a 120hz display. It's only fixed for 60hz.

Well better than nothing....?

Of course it does.. being able to use CUDA is a massive improvement on its own. And after using Windows more and also WSL... developement is also much easier to me. Sadly, I still need a mac for the occasional iOS development, which means I need more computers now for the same stuff because the computer that could run all of it, is a piece of garbage due to "business decisions".

Can't have **** in this world...

You all want to know why the 16" M1 Mac is so quiet when connected to external monitor.

Well I did a bit of digging and found this. Below is a poster of his use of the M1 16" at idle:

Can't believe how little power this thing draws relative to other machines

Here's my GPU power with a bunch of Safari tabs, teams, music, activity monitor, Firefox and an external 4k display connected - when I'm just reading as opposed to moving things around...

**** GPU usage ****

GPU active frequency: 13 MHz

GPU active residency: 3.11% (389 MHz: 2.8% 486 MHz: .08% 648 MHz: .03% 778 MHz: .22% 972 MHz: .02% 1296 MHz: 0%)

GPU requested frequency: (389 MHz: 2.7% 486 MHz: .04% 648 MHz: .05% 778 MHz: .20% 972 MHz: .10% 1296 MHz: 0%)

GPU idle residency: 96.89%

GPU Power: 15 mW

Ok, but no, thanks :) I love my intel mbp, it’s not perfect but it has the power I need to do the work And make money. And now they fixed the main issue. I can use egpu if I need more gpu power. So I’ll change it to M1 or M2 when I’ll need a new one :)

same here. Love my 16", I need the Intel compatiblity for now as some apps are not yet native. Just provding some technical stats as to why the M1 Macs are so quiet under load when using a monitor.
