It’s not a issue I can’t believe ppl are calling this a “issue” u have to bump up the brightness above normal usage and look for blooming , seriously? And to the ppl crying for oled idk why because that technology has issues like raised blacks, horrible green tint, uniformity issues, banding, crushed blacks, and this is not me against oled I have a oled tv and it’s great but if I go looking for “issues “ I will find them . My iPhone 12 has horrible green gradient tint that I notice when it’s in a low light environment on a dark background. And I exchanged it several times and this was the best I could find.

Both screen technology have there flaws if you look for them some cases they are obvious that’s the screen lottery. but the fact is mini led is far superior to what we got in last years iPad and the 2021 11” , till micro led is available this is what we have just enjoy.

Spot on, most of these people are going off over exposed photos and videos on reddit and Twitter lol, they’ve never owned or seen a mini led iPad in person.

99% of the people on here have said the camera is making this issue way worse than it is, I did the exact same test you did and like I said it was nowhere near as bad as that.

it‘s absolutely the camera 100%, or you have a faulty device
Absolutly not the camera.

ive had the 2021 12.9 since launch, and as long as the outside environment has similar lighting as the bezels of the ipad, its hella noticeable.

apple really BS the crap out of miniLED, as im now forced to admit that maybe the OLED was the right choice all along.
dont get me wrong, the colours are amazing, but this blooming is way to large. it *has* to be a software issue, otherwise this would be insanity.

here watch this:
remember to set the highest settings.
the conditions are as follows:

dark room, enough so that the black bezels “melts” with the outside environment.
set high settings.
watch the video.
its quality is a amazing, but the blooming is just… wth

Call me a de-hyper, but as an early buyer i need to be completly honest here, especially now that the ”reviewers” utterly failed to review the product flaws.

Yes it is. Screenbrightness doe not matter, for me it is visible from 10% to 100% brightness.
agreed, on some other occasions, like vieweing this music icon in file manager/archives app

you will see a huge bloom around it.

again same conditions as ive mentioned before.

dark environment, by which i mean dark enough to melt with the bezels of the ipad.

absolutly not. its definetly an issue. And ofc LFC, because hundreds of people seeing blooming are all just liars, way to dismiss the issue. and stev, i dont have to bump up the brightness to see blooming, as long as the environment is dark enough. quite troublesome

im seeing some rather foul level blooming on my side in the night. seeing his screen(from the youtube video), has made me think that not all miniLED have equal quality.

as for why people are mad? maybe because they kept touting about how superior this miniLED was.
who wouldve thought the blooming was this bad???

again, im gonna call apple to check if there this really isnt a defect.

Had the 12.9 since Friday. Screen is fine during the day for me. However I’m a night owl so room is dark, use dark mode, black background with kindle app and BRIGHTNESS ALL THE WAY DOWN.

Blooming is def there around brighter screen elements as are random dark shadows on the black background along the edge of the screen (2x1/2“long rectangless, 1/2” squares, maybe 8 total). Distracting for me and disappointing.

Likely returning for a 2021 11 (pissed I traded in my 2018 11” IPP, shoulda kept it) though I’m bummed because I do like the increased screen real estate vs the 11. It does feel much bigger and more immersive despite being the size of a piece of paper.

Hoping for Apple to “tune” it is a waste imo. If they can and by the time they do, your return window will have closed. My guess they’re sourcing panels from multiple manufacturers and Apples acceptance criteria isn’t as tight as it normally would be due to the chip shortage and need to keep shareholders happy.

I do hope this doesn’t turn out to be the iPad 3 fiasco all over again.

If I sit in a completely dark room and max out the brightness, I can definitely see a fair bit of blooming on my unit. However, if I do the same with any of my other LCD displays, I get equally as bad backlight bleed, IPS/backlight glow, spotlighting and what not. Pick your poison. What’s more problematic though, is the fact that doing so is literally painful and completely messes up my eyes, making for a very unpleasant viewing experience far worse than that of the blooming coming from the display. When I set the display to a brightness setting that gives me a comfortable viewing experience, there’s very little blooming even in a dark room.

I doubt they will, but Apple could conceivably implement a feature that sets all the LEDs at the same level, effectively turning it into a traditional LCD display.

in a way, its already possible.

if you, say, open two notes in split screen view, the display will mostly turn into a regular LCD display.
this will also remove blooming completly.

the same works for other apps as well.

I am one who has the brightness up all the way, only time it's lower is when I am ready for bed or middle of night. I need the bright contrast - my eyes have problems focusing some times. I do hope mine is good - will know tomorrow

The blooming isn't as big of deal to me as the local dimming zones being visible in dark mode. Open up the system settings in dark mode and go to system update. In a dark environment, there are large gray boxes/blobs around white text/graphics. This is actually more visible at lower brightness, not higher.

It won't be fixed by software. It's an inherent issue with LCD's with advanced backlighting like FALD/MiniLED and why I have an OLED TV for movie viewing instead of a top of the line FALD LCD/QLED set by Samsung/Sony. You get awesome blacks with MiniLED/FALD LCD's but you'll always get halos/blooming as there's not a 1:1 ratio between the light source and pixel like with OLED. Traditional LCD's like the prior IPS on the 12.9's didn't show it due to their poor blacks/contrast ratio.

It's also subjective. My wife isn't bothered by the least with the excessive blooming on our Samsung Q90 in a dark room while it bothers the heck out of me. That's why we have a Samsung in the bedroom while I have an LG OLED in the den as she likes to leave TV/Movies on pause while she does something for the next hour or so and has already burned in severely our last plasma.

Since there have been complaints about flaws on some, but not all screens each year since the beginning of time, it makes sense that some miniLED screens will be better than others. Many here are reporting that their screens are not affected or the issue is so minor that they are not bothered by it. I think you should return your device and try one more before giving up on it.

What he is showing in this video is pretty much what I'm seeing in RL when using my 2021 12.9". If some people truly are seeing what we see in some of those posted pictures, then I suspect faulty display hard- or firmware being involved.
Absolutely, using my iPad in a dark room with only the tv on, can crank up brightness to a uncomfortable level, normally have mine at 30-40% at night, not seeing any blooming, display looks gorgeous, jumped on the verge website, feathered articles have a pure black background with white text, cranked brightness to a 100%, no blooming.

Maybe some have faulty screens like you said, but most of these people trashing it haven't even used or seen one in person, they're going off over exposed photos and videos on reddit and twitter lmao, most likely apple haters or android fan boys.

You must have a faulty unit, no issues with mine, Even max tech tested out the blooming in a very in depth and un biased video, honestly had enough speaking about this over blown total non issue blooming nonsense, even members have posted photos on these forums showing how good the screen is compared to the fake over exposed photos being posted online.

I don’t believe you. All displays will have some form of blooming. It’s inherent in mini-LED displays.

A very minor shadow that's consistent around all the edges doesn't seem like a dealbreaker to me (it might be the way it's supposed to look). Years ago, I went through a few iPads (iPad 3 I think?) that had the dreaded spine shadow, which was only on the left side of the screen, larger and WAY more prominent.

I feel like Apple could have made a larger screen but onlyset the usable area to the parts without the edge shadow, cover up the edge shadow part with black glass as well.

anyway, it doesn’t bother me on an iPad, but I think it would absolutely bother me if the next Macbook has this issue. The menu bar is something I refer to more often on a mac and I’d see it all the time.
