Trying to understand some people with their need to sit in a room with no lights and let their eyes get tortured with bright white on black background looking for blooming. I can see some on my iPad when I am looking for it but when I stop doing that and enjoy my iPad in everything I actually do use it for, then I do not notice the blooming or the shadow edge which I never noticed when I first started up the iPad.

Not everyone (and it sounds like not you), but there are some users for whom it matters related to their real world use cases.

For exemple I regularly use my iPad in a very dark environment with a mostly black screen and some white elements on it. Not for anything strange: just casual night time reading while in dark mode.

The shadow is definitely there on the 12.9" I received today. It goes around all the edges and is so uniform that it feels like a design limitation rather than a display flaw. In short, playing the lottery is going to be futile. You either live with it or skip it.

Personally I think I’ll be able to live with it. I’m usually really picky about my displays, but because it’s so uniform, it feels more like it’s just part of the bezel (I suspect the effect will look absolutely terrible on a white bezel though). If it was just down one edge, it would drive me crazy and my eyes would keep wandering there. I’ve returned several products in the past because of that.

Again, because it’s so uniform, it feels more like some sort of image effect than a flaw. Combined with true tone and the rounded corners, it has a nice relaxing effect on my eyes compared to the display on my 1st gen 2015 12.9". In all other aspects, the display is just miles ahead of my old 2015. It’s better in every aspect and although I can see some blooming if I provoke it or really look hard for it. I haven’t really noticed it during normal use (running dark mode) at this point. I’m really liking it so far and it looks way more accurate than my *cough* OLED *cough* iPhone 12 Pro Max.
As Apple will state in their future “Recall notice “ about the display shadow effect Issue . A FEW of our customers are complaining about….. etc yea, yea only a few. They are hesitant to say a great number of our customers.

Has anyone who is complaining about blooming tried 14.6 RC 2. I’m on it and blooming isn’t an issue for me.

Are you saying movie theaters should now play movies with the lights on along with home movie/game rooms and a disclaimer should be included in the 2021 iPP 12.9 box that says "not for use in low ambient light conditions"? Sounds like a good idea so make it happen. On the bright side, outdoor Alaskans with 24/7 sunlight likely won't see the issue.

So I got my new iPad Pro 12.9 on Friday. I’ve really enjoyed using it up until tonight when I though I’d do some work in bed and stream some shows on Disney +.

The blooming is extrmely noticeable and distracting, at medium brightness, at low brightness, any brIghtness. Intrestingly its very apparent around the trackpad cursor too, when I move the cursor around a large block of light surrounds the cursor and moves around with it. Anyway I’ve attached some photos if anyone is interested. These do actually represent what I’m seeing, only slightly exaggerated. I’m on 14.5.1. View attachment 1779777 View attachment 1779778
Here’s what I see in a dim room at full brightness, pic taken on whilst playing.

My eyes are not so good so I'm a dark theme/dark mode/dark skin person through and through. Not gonna bother me this shadowing on white background.

Nope, it's blooming. No bloom when playing the same video (linked below) back on OLED.

in my pic you can see ghosting because it is a photo of video in motion. It’s actually a Live Photo too so I can move through frames. If it were blooming then it would 1. Not be yellow, 2. Not be sharp Edged, it would be like light bloom. Pmsl

heres another shot, room is lighter this time.

Can’t believe this thread is still going ?‍♂️? after hearing about this so called screen shadow, haven’t gone looking for it, hasn’t come into my field of view, it’s that thin, it’s not even noticeable.

This was always going to happen. Tech geeks pick apart minor flaws in a new tech (for iPad).

There is definitely a small amount of blooming, but it’s not noticeable if you’re not looking for it. The edge thing is very subtle, and not really a problem if you’re not looking for it.

Both of these are somewhat influenced by perceptual/visual differences between people. The edge shadow in particular is partly perceptual - I can see a slight shadow around the edge of my iPhone screen, and thats oled. There are various optical illusions which illustrate the way you can misinterpret high contrast (eg checker board shadow illusion). Similarly halos/glare are partly a product of optical systems, and again can be seen on oled screens (which is why photos of the blooming aren‘t reliable).

It‘s very subjective. Neither is too bad. Stop looking for it.

glad i avoided the 12.9" model now. it's shocking Apple are charging £999 minimum for this. they really messed it up this year. they should ditch Mini LED for the 2022 iPad Pro and just put an OLED in it. Have said it all along that Mini LED is nothing to be excited about. Until Micro LED comes out then you just can't beat OLED. OLED ain't perfect and yes it is a possibility you will get burn in but that's something that might happen in 2-3 years with heavy use. Blooming you need to deal with on a daily basis from day 1.

my 11" might not have deep blacks but at least i've not got shadows all around the edges and blooming. the blacks on the 11" ain't even that bad.

Not having any of the issues you’re mentioning, loving this display, you‘re commenting on something that you’ve never owned. ? at least try it before you knock it, all these click bait photos and videos online are laughable, I can make my display look like it has severe blooming just by taking a photo or video of my display, looks nothing like these over exposed photos and videos online.

viewing these forums in dark mode at 40% brightness, white text looks sharp and bright with no blooming to be seen.

As with testing things yourself you are completely right, always test things to form your own opinions instead of relying on what other people say.

I just got my 12.9 and i was VERRY worried about this thing before getting it.
However..... The screen is ****ing awesome.
Watching youtube LG OLED test. O_O <- My reaction.

To the blooming issue:

I tested with blackout curtains in pitch black room and with 100% brightness you can see the bloom for sure.
To my eyes, my 11 pro max also has bloom in pitch black room at 100% brightness.

Camera makes it worse, wayyy worse. Off angle you can see the bloom more clearly and with with text there is bloom. But here's the catch.

Lowered the brightness to <50% and boom, no bloom or minimal blooming.

Do people actually notice this shadow 24/7? haven’t gone looking for it again since I heard about it here, neither does it come into my field of view when I’m using my iPad, the shadow/line, whatever you want to call it is that thin it’s barely noticeable, makes it a total non issue in my opinion.

If it bothers you that much, return it or don’t go looking for it and enjoy your mini led M1 beast of a machine.
Screen shadow is similar to eye floaters - you notice them only if you want to (sorry for ruining your vision for today, everyone).

Yes it is. Screenbrightness doe not matter, for me it is visible from 10% to 100% brightness.
Sorry to hear that dude, looks like your eyes can’t adjust well in darkness. I can’t see any blooming under 30% brightness in a completely dark environment.
