Really? This shadow edge effect is the exact same on the Display XDR’s?
Yep. Think about how the tech works. You can't have 100% even backlighting near edges, unless you get millions of micro-LEDs.

This is in notes

my guess is an Update can fix this
Fix what? A screenshot can’t show your blooming problem. It is a physical property of how light from the backlight LEDs is diffused from behind the LCD. Only a photo of the screen can show it. And software updates can’t add LEDs or change how a diffuser panel works.

I was looking toward this iPad Pro as a potential device for designing, I'll probably try one in-store to see if the shadowing or distortion is likely to be potentially a factor (as I need correct colors and no visual issues in mockups). If it's just a slight warm aura triggered by diffusion of brightness then I can likely cope, but if it's something more prominent I might have to rethink.

I guess Arnie was right in Predator when he said "If it bleeds we can kill it" 😏

Tbh it’s not really a problem. I Just wanted to show it. When drawing a dot with the Apple Pencil a 2cm grey square appears which is visible in a pitch dark room even with minimum brightness

that said : movies look incredible. I was watching an old one on Disney : Star Wars - empire strikes back on Disney and the difference is incredible. Absolutely stunning

I have the screen shadow and some bloom and I think to an extent you’re either sensitive to these things or you’re not, and a lot of it is a natural restriction of the tech they’re using in the device.

However, the big squares of backlight you can see around tiny dots drawn in Notes dark mode if you’re looking at it in a black room is 100% a bug of some kind where it’s lighting up too much Of the backlight around the dot. An odd one for sure but as I say, likely can be mitigated somewhat with software. I expect patches to the display software in the future so I’m not too worried and tbh, it’s worth it for the improved blacks for me if these are just limits of the tech.

At normal brightness I don’t particularly notice much blooming. Once I start pushing max brightness I begin to see some blooming but its not overwhelming. Some of the images in these forums Must be defective models.

I don’t have any issues with the one I got today. 12.9” space grey, 256gb WiFi only. Love it!!! Love the magic keyboard too!!!
You noticing non hdr YouTube and apple tv + videos look a little blurry and pixelated, fast moving scenes is very blurry. 🥺

If they added an extra row of zones at every side that reached underneath the bezel they could fix it but it’s not something anyone has done yet, there might not be room for it, and by the time someone figures it out we’ll probably have Micro LED anyway.

The dimming zone around the blue point looks very big. But I do not know why. Apple says the screen hast 2500 dimming zones. Does anybody else have the same issue?

This is the problem with using backlit lcd. Yes, there are thousands of zones but cannot compared to self lit oled. MiniLed is just a stopgap until Apple figures out cheaper way to make oled or use microled. why do you think cheap Chinese tv makers are using this instead of oled?
Samsung already uses OLED on their tablets, with 120Hz. There's no reason why Apple couldn't have gone the same route, unless they absolutely want to brag about display brightness (afaik it's harder to get an OLED to be as bright as miniLED)

And don't bring up burn-in, because that's rarely an issue anymore, and I'd rather have a slight burn in than the miniLED glowing issue.

Wow. Not seeing any blooming like that. At max brightness I can see a little bloom but only when I look at the screen way off angle.

I went to my local Apple Store to compare my 12.9 to the two display models they had. Both display models showed the border shadow. There was a third 12.9 that didn’t have the shadow, but it turns out that was a fourth gen iPad Pro.

Of course that makes sense, but surely there's some technical reason why they cannot. They over-engineered the hell out of the rest of both of these displays, so I assume there's engineering considerations we're not aware of.

I'm certainly no expert in the technology, but I do know for a fact that the cost of the panels increase exclusively related to the cost of the LED's used on the panel, thats really it, the more LED's, the higher the cost, everything else remains roughly the same.

My guess here is Apple didn't want to spend the extra money on a bunch of LED's that nobody would "see" just to light the frame around the bezel.

Again, no expert here, but I'm guessing the cost to Apple to manufacture these panels is fairly significant relative to the cost of the previous generation and Apple has trillions of dollars because they spend their money very wisely.

So - 2021 mini LED XDR great for creatives, but not great for reading white text on black?
I’m reading this thread on the 2021 mini-LED XDR with white text on black background and it’s a great experience. Don’t notice any bleeding whatsoever.

That's how it looks like at around 10% brightness in a dark room. It is still visible.
Yes, that's why I'm saying you likely have a defective iPad, since I can't make my iPad Pro do it at all no matter how bright I make things. The only way I can get images with such huge visible blue smears is by looking at my camera screen (not with my eyes) with the exposure set really bright.

I can’t believe I’m the guy saying this…
For those complaining about the blooming/edge shadow. Have you updated to 14.5.1? They shipped the 12.9’s with 14.5, and for some reason (maybe it was just the restart) when I updated to 14.5.1, the blooming was much lower when testing it by drawing a line in Notes.

Post a before and after photo with same brightness and ambient light with 14.5 and 14.5.1.

You have single handedly saved my M1 12.9” Order. Respect.

Picked up mine earlier, also has the shadow around the edges of the screen... will keep an eye on this space to see if anyone has demonstrably better screens in terms of the shadow. I don't really dislike it but I'll keep using it to see how I feel about it with more time
