Personally I would prefer the 16GB over the added storage
So I’ve found an M1 IMac 24 for £1365… here’s the kicker, it’s the 8gb ram with 512gb storage… which is cheaper than the order I made for the 256gb/8gb ram I bought from apple. It also says delivery within 6 days. Only thing is it’s 8gb ram and the 16gb with trackpad I ordered is scheduled for 22nd June. Is it worth getting the cheaper + more storage version for considerably less than the 16gb ram with 256gb storage and trackpad that I paid 1600 for?
I would also go for the one with more RAM. You can't add more RAM but you can add more storage via an external SSD.

Seems ike the Apple order status is now back online.

It is possible to go from "Preparing to Ship" today to delivery on May 21. Consider most new iPhones that are ordered at launch are ordered on a Friday, move to preparing to ship over the weekend, get marked shipped early to mid-week, and are delivered on the following Friday. Can't guarantee this will happen with these iMacs due to COVID impacting shipping times and all, but there certainly is hope.

I'm wondering how I missed the announcement of these. SO I'm 17 days late for pre-order. Trading in my late 2016 MacBook Pro, for the yellow 16/256 ssd. Definitely a huge change in SSD since I have the 2 TB MacBook Pro, but I figured if I need to, I'll add an external drive. Arrival date isn't until early July, but hoping it will be earlier.
I had the purple iMac in college and even though it was frustrating since my college did NOT use Macs, I loved it. Even if they did have a horrible reputation lol.

My blue iMac custom config arrived in Memphis around 9am CDT (FedEx).
The other, one of the standard configs done in the same order, hasn’t moved from processing yet.

Mine is still May 24-28th but in processing status. Green 1tb/16gb ram. Hoping to see an update soon!

Yeah it seems like no one does that config apart from Apple which is annoying.
It’s because there are essentially two types of configurations.

The “standard configurations”, these are produced in bulk (chosen presumably based on a forecast showing higher demand for these) and these can be ordered in bulk by 3rd party retailers.

And the custom configurations, these are made to order and will always ship directly from the assembly line. 3rd party retailers can’t/won’t order these in bulk.

In part because the extended delivery times make it difficult to keep them in stock and also because it’s a big gamble with potentially little pay off (people are less inclined to pay a premium for a device that doesn’t exactly meet their preferred config choices when they can go to Apple to pay the same or a little more/less for the exact config they desire).

Silver, mid-tier, standard config just changed to “preparing to ship” around lunch time. East coast USA

30 Apr @ 0605 ordered 1 blue base model, in processing since w/ del. 21-27 May.

16 May @ 1300 now preparing to ship w/ del. still 21-27 May.
