I thought BTO Macs were manufactured and shipped from China?
I think Apple has been diversifying its supply chain quite a lot since China is becoming a less than ideal partner for a number of reasons. I think manufacturing is taking place outside of China too, at least to some extent.

That's good to know. I purchased my M1 mini a few weeks ago and it took about 2 weeks from China, which is interesting as I live in U.K.

So what's the advantage of making a return within 14 days? Canceling the order? Or the certainty of having a brand new computer and not a reconditioned? My left and right speakers sound totally different so I can't keep it, something is wrong with them. Just wondering if I must be fast or if I can wait some months. Hoping that the coil whine problem will be sorted out also. Mine has little of it but I fear I could receive one much worse.

My card was charged earlier, but my order is still processing. Did most people find that their card was charged shortly before dispatch, or do they charge your card and then build your order?

If they charged you it's ready, they'll ship it within 2 days
Thanks. It’s been nearly 24 hours since they charged my card and it’s still on processing.

I’d have expected it to move to “preparing to ship” now. Not that I’m impatient or anything. ?

Took a couple days for me too, I'd start to worry on Monday XD

I know this thread is practically dead, but my Blue 8/8 1TB 16GB shipped today via UPS. Estimated delivery is Friday 10 September.

To those interested in typical current wait times for BTO iMacs, mine was:

Order placed on 12 August
Card charged on 1 September
Order changed to 'Preparing to Ship' on 2 September
Shipped on 4 September

Ordered Silver on 14th August.
8-core CPU with 4 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores, 8-core GPU and 16-core Neural Engine.
16GB unified memory.
512GB SSD storage.
Delivery 10th - 17th September.
I'm so excited! I've waited long enough to save up for it, what harm can another 4 weeks do? It's got me hyped seeing people say they received theirs earlier than first estimated though.
Do you usually get an email or text update once your order progresses from 'processing'?
Exciting Times! - My order is now ‘preparing to ship’

So I've had time to play with it... Loving it so far! I came from a 8 year old 21.5" iMac to the new M1 iMac, so I was always going to see a big difference. So much faster and the screen is beautiful.

A couple of small things I've noticed though:

The boot up time is slower than I thought it'd be. It's many, many times faster than my old iMac and is perfectly adequate but it's slower than my Windows laptop. I thought, given the SSD, it'd basically boot in the same time. It loads... then asks for me to authenticate, then I get another progress bar. On my Windows laptop it boots me almost instantly to the authentication screen and then when I put my password in, it's pretty much instant (I don't need to wait further).

The RAM fills up pretty quickly. I went for the 16GB model and I'm glad I did because with a few Chrome tabs and a few programs open, I was using around 10GB of RAM. Obviously a lot less than the maximum, but it surprised me that I was using so much given I wasn't exactly putting the machine under massive strain.

Otherwise I'm loving it and I'm definitely glad I bought it. :)

Just ordered the green 8/8/16/512 and I ordered it yesterday and it is saying October 20-27. I was thinking to wait and see if there was going to be an announcement around 27-30” but I realized I think I’m just good with the existing 24” I like that size screen anyway and I do photo editing personally but at this point the image size I’m working with isn’t too large and all of the power these days seems more to be around video editing so photos I don’t think really seem to make the M1 break a sweat unless you are batch processing a ton of images which I never really do and if I did I would just go do something else and wait however long it took to finish since I’m not doing it every day to make money so the more I think about it this machine actually seems perfect for me.

I’m really excited about the reports of just good snappyness throughout the OS and to get a chance to see how the Apple Silicon runs (and hopefully much better heat management) I just think it’s really interesting what they are doing with computing it seemed like for a long time intel would just take a big processor and throw it at every problem where Apple is more taking the approach of having a group of specialized chips and send the instruction to the chip that is best suited to handle it and it’s something that was never really feasible in the past because of all of the communication needed between chips but Apple has already built all of that experience with the iPhones so I am just glad that Apple is kind of starting from the ground up on these. It’s also just cool to see a company with that kind of experience just decide screw it we’re just going to go it alone and start from scratch and it sounds like the gains are impressive so looking forward to see it.

I also really appreciate the colors and maybe this is just a phase going through Covid but I’ve typically been pretty space grey centric but after spending a lot of time home I think I really appreciate pops of color so I have green APM and I’m really glad that they have a matching iMac because I really love the color combination and I was a little worried about the white borders on the screen but I do see how white would blend into the background more since I have white walls so I am interested to try it out. Overall the design of these things look stunning I keep looking at photos and am really excited to see it!

The event will be around mid October so you'll have plenty of time to cancel the order eventually

I'm a professional designer/photographer and I can say the screen size is perfect and this thing flies

That’s great to hear and that did factor into my decision making I was thinking if I wait until after the event the value for my current 27” tanks so I may as well do it now and then if they do come out with a new 27-32” I could always cancel but I’ll probably still just stick with the 24” and see how I like it and then it could also be a good bridge through the transition period and a good test to see if I need all of that power and then I can decide which way I want to go. I really like the idea of a modular Apple silicon tower that isn’t Mac Pro level power but just like a return of the Mac.

Anyway... the bigger M1X iMac is rumoured to be announced around may 2022 (along with M1X also on the 24"?).

In October I think we'll probably only see the new M1X MacBooks, maybe new Mac Pro.
