According to MacRumors, Alonso lost pole position last race by 0.1 seconds due to Max being a superior driver and the rocketship called Red Bull he is driving has nothing to do with it.

So if the Red Bull is not faster, MacRumors are implying Perez is better than Alonso too as he has been beating Alonso all season so far. And this is despite crashing his car and sending his Red Bull in the gravel constantly.

I’m just following the “consensus” that Alonso is getting beat due to his driving skills rather than the Aston Martin he is driving.
I’m not following who at Macrumors is saying that?
Alonso is certainly having a good year. But I fear as the season goes on Aston will lose ground even more.
They just aren’t set up to bring upgrades at the same speed as the big three. Hope I’m wrong though.

Nope. Sadly I agree.

Going to start dry, but the clouds overhead look like they are holding some water...

Ferrari replaced LeClerc's gearbox (with a used one) along with his control box and energy store. They also made setup changes to improve his top-speed to improve overtaking opportunities.

George Russel went across the gravel trap during morning warmup, but Toto said there was no damage. We shall see.

A rare sunday afternoon for me, empty house. Housework done (bar a load of washing to hang up) so it’s time for the F1.

Fair play to RedBull. That car is a rocketship. Worse tyres but 6+ seconds ahead of Ferrari. Wow.

Ferrari's strategy incompetence normally just annoys me, but now it is starting to actively upset me.

They start LEC on Hards, which makes perfect sense for his position and goals, then once he actually makes up 10 spots in 20 laps, they pull him in for Softs and send him to the back. So he's floundering around with the backmarkers while Positions 2-10 make their first of two pit stops instead of being in a position to move up even farther and then hopefully undercut/overcut them.

And now LEC just made his second stop to go back on Hards and send him towards the back again. If he finishes in the points, he deserves a bonus.

Very bad driving by Alonso as he got beat by Max and Perez again. That Aston Martin is just as fast as the Red Bull according to MacRumors and it’s all due to driving skills.

Another easy win for Max, with Lewis and George second and third.

Max was helped by tire strategy, I think, as he was arguably on a one-stop (Mediums to Hards) compared to everyone else (Softs-Mediums-Hards), but I am a bit concerned everyone might have already given up and now assume Max will always win when he is on Pole and therefore their strategies are being calculated to finish 2nd through 10th instead of trying to the win.

BS penalty on Tsunoda, IMO, which cost him a points finish.

Not sure what was going on with Alonso. Pretty much nowhere until his final stop when he suddenly came alive. I give him credit for accepting Stroll had the stronger race until then and he chose to stay behind him to the end rather than push for the pass and risk an accident.

W14 definitely working better today. Still would have had a better pic on the upgrades is it were 40C not 31C as far as tire management.

AMR bringing upgrades to Canada. Should be interesting.

DOD should have been George IMO.

Not much to add for Max. P1 by 24 sec in the RB19-Honda.

Mercedes is always fine on this track historically, so it doesn’t mean much. Better wait for an other track to see how good the W14 is with the new upgrades.

In any case, it’s still a big gap to the Red Bull’s.

Spain tends to not much of an indicator since everyone tends to bring their first round of upgrades (when it used to be the first European race) and as they do Winter Testing there so everyone has plenty of data to use for setup comparisons.

Silverstone will probably be the best indicator of where everyone stands since most of the teams are in the neighborhood so upgrades will be plentiful as they can make tweaks at the factory overnight on Friday after FP1 and FP2 and have them ready for FP3 on Saturday morning.

A good day for Mercedes and a strong message to Toto for these contract negotiations this coming week. A good but of progression on the development front even though they are still way off the very front.

I'm not sure I agree with the lap 1 rule. Russel went from 12th to 6th by cutting one corner and got no penalty for it. That to me is far too many places gained by cutting the corner.

Excellent race with loads of overtaking. Fair game to Mercedes they worked hard for that, but this is a track that favours front end bias cars, so maybe that's why they did so well? Max needed to rain in going off track limits, unfortunately the coverage I watched didn't show it, in fact only time I saw him was at the start, pit stops and the odd few cars he lapped, oh and the finish.
Tsunoda surely did not deserve that penalty? He was ahead into and around the corner and Zou was trying to go round the outside. Very odd. Unless they would argue he didn't leave enough space?

Anybody here been watching the TT this week? Michael Dunlop has overtaken John McGuinness and heading for his uncle Joey’s record, he’s had an amazing week with 4 TT wins. Now 25 TT wins in his career, one off Joey. I hope he gets 27 and calls it a day. With three Dunlop’s dead from road racing, it would be amazing to see him retire as a living legend.

Road racing is my main motorsport interest with F1 second. It’s difficult to put F1 drivers on a pedestal when the guys who get on a bike and do 135mph laps around the island next to stone walls are there getting far less credit despite being absolute hero’s. I think I did a TT thread a few years ago but perhaps it’s not the right forum for it after all.

The 100th Anniversary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans is this weekend and NASCAR's "Garage 56" entry looks to be faster than the entire GTE field after the Free Practice sessions.
They're pretty good at pit stops too. I always try to watch Le Mans especially when Audi was running their diesels but this year I'll be watching for Garage 56/NASCAR.

Ferrari winning, who knew? Maybe they should give their F1 brethren a pep talk.
Some of the commentators mentioned that a lot of the Ferrari team for WEC/Le Mans came from both their previous GTE Pro teams and also from their F1 team - perhaps why Ferrari F1 has not done as well? Perhaps they have divided their efforts too much between F1 and the new WEC/Le Mans hypercar?

On the other hand, since WEC and Le Mans dropped the GTE Pro category this year, there is no factory Aston Martin entry any more - only customer teams. Could this be why Aston Martin F1 has seen such an improvement this year - they are not dividing their effort across multiple championships?

Pure speculation, of course. But thoroughly enjoyed the new hypercars at Le Mans - fantastic race!
