An other one is Lewis his 2019 title against that cheating Ferrari car. You knew, I knew it, everybody knew Ferrari was doing some illegal stuff with their engines as the Ferrari was a rocketship, it wasn't even funny.

However Lewis was simply a much better driver than Vettel in the end and Lewis won the championship.

It was also later confirmed by the FIA that Ferrari was cheating in the end also.

Mercedes aren’t so innocent in cheating FYI. Trick is to get away with it.

People may say they had the dominant cars, but as these days you have 2 drivers per team, as Sergio is proving over the last 3 races, if you can’t drive and use your skill and abilities then having the dominant car means jack all.

I loved it how Max reacted when he was taking the corner a bit too much, and nearly lost it. He was giddy so funny.

Also great to see the interaction between Max, Lewis and Fernando afterwards in the cool down. With Lewis joking how awesome Max’s “behind” is.

It was a good race for those three current and former champions.

I just tried watching the Canadian grand prix Sunday and was appalled by the commentary. It was like watching amateur racing. I switched over to watch Indy car at Road America. I hadn’t had a chance to watch F1 until now this year and if that was typical commentary I probably won’t be watching the rest of the season.

It takes a great driver to win in a great car. At least there isn’t the accusations Lewis used to get where apparently ‘Bottas wasn’t allowed to win’. It’s clear Checo lacks the consistency Max is able to produce to make the most of the dominant machinery. Checo should be rightly finishing second behind him in every race but something just isn’t right for him. This is what sets the likes of Max, Lewis and Alonso apart from other drivers and that is how they are able to dominate their teammates in order to earn that number one status.

It can’t help Checo’s confidence mind you with mouth for hire Marko criticising him in the press when he’d finished ahead of Max earlier in the season. I can imagine there is a lot of pressure on his seat behind the scenes and it’s not an easy situation to manage when you’ve got Max as a teammate with his talent.

If Perez doesn't improve, no idea what's up with him as he was doing great in the beginning, and RB drop him, anyone else think Lando may be poached to replace him?

Considering the miracles Alex Albon performs every race weekend in the Williams, I wonder if they might want him back (he raced for RBR in 2019 and 2020). That being said, Perez has double the points Albon ever did in the car per season.

Great question from a different forum:

When's the last time that an F1 champion was crowned that is widely agreed to have had the inferior car?

Thoughts?

I started watching full seasons of F1 in 1989, so since then, I would say Senna's 3rd WDC in 1991 would be my choice. The Honda RA121E 3.5 V12 was a beast of an engine, but I think the fuel efficiency was fairly worse than the Renault RS3 3.5 V10 so it started with a heavier fuel load. As a chassis, the Williams FW14 was also on another level than the MP4/6 in terms of technology. Mansell arguably should have won the title that year if not for unreliability and being DQd (for cause) from Portugal.

Not a full season but in 2009 the superior Brawn was second best car for the second half of the season. Button held his nerve to maintain points to win the championship whilst Rubens lost his head at times complaining and making mistakes.

Not sure I agree on some of the observations of Mansell and Hill to be honest. Nigel was a very strong racer and I don’t believe for a second that if he’d had Senna as a teammate he’d definitely be beaten. Senna wasn’t perfect although his legend has made him out to be. He had his flaws and was easily rattled when he had a teammate near his level. He didn’t always come out on top with his often temperamental personality. One of the greatest for sure and Mansell is too in his own right. I do think Senna was the best if his generation however.

Damon came into the sport very late at 32 years old and didn’t just perform well due to his car. Sure he wasn’t going to win a championship in a Brabham and had one of the best cars during his time with Williams, but people forget he was very capable on his day and could make Michael look average at times. Not suggesting he was the better driver, but I hate how he’s often referred to as being lucky and untalented.

It could be argued 2008 was won by the second best car when you look at the stats. Ferrari had 8 pole positions to McLaren’s 7 and recorded a staggering 13 fastest laps to McLaren’s 3, with Kovalainen getting 2 of them. Ferrari won the constructors title that year by 21 points in the old system. I think the tables turned after McLaren having the better car the year before in 2007.
Me too! And Damon was great in the rain as well!

I forever love Damon Hill.

But the Torro Rosso and the RBR in Albon's day were nowhere near what they are today. Especially the RBR.

But he is wringing out every bit he can from the Williams.

Alonso is another perfect example, has the exact same car as Stroll yet he’s finished on the podiums several times this year, with Stroll in what 6th? 7th? on average.
Checo started well but it does seem he’s not getting on with the car now. Lewis the same, a perfect drive to come second, whilst his team mate rookie George stuffed it into the wall over cooking the corner. As you say it’s why they are on the podiums.

I qgree, the quality of the SkyF1 team has tanked, I guess as the costs of broadcasting rise, they simply cannot afford the team they want, or Sky management don't care about standards, Karun is so biased towards Red Bull, I would not be surprised if he goes on air in a branded shirt... I wish that it was possible to have a natural sound 0 commentary feed audio selection..

Would be nice to see Checo replace Lance “I can’t dance” Stroll at AMR next year. Would love to see either Charles or Lando take his place.

Unlikely however.

I expect Papa Stroll eventually is going to want to see a return on that investment he has been pouring into the team, so...
I never quite got the logic of Pops Stroll, there he has a million venues, 30 teams, and a decent track he could have bought for about 5c a square foot, right in the middle of Montreal.. Gone indycar, nascar, trucks.. But he went into F1, that only visits Canada once a year... Maybe Junior is a 1 step below F1, F2 is really the same as indycar.. There dad could own as many teams as he wants, and if feeling really lucky, go and gamble at the casino on the island...

Lance as good as he is, will never win races, will never win the F1 WDC, Lance has more chance being preggy, and is a tad too old, and there are simply way too many better younger drivers in the F2 and lower, what about that Drugovich, he was brilliant in F2, aged out of the system or won too many times, why is he not racing f1 in place of Stroll???

I doubt that’ll happen either. They sacked Checo in 2020 after all and he was the driver ahead on points and had won a race. I think performance is secondary to gifting Lance his seat in that team.

Yeah, but against Drugovich, Jr would come 3rd and crash twice.. Not sure why papa has him driving, should alternate, give Drugovich a chance...

I never quite got the logic of Pops Stroll...

He is Chairman of Aston Martin and owns 25% of the company and buying Racing Point and turning it into the Aston Martin factory team was surely part of his marketing plan for the company, as it is for all of the other F1 factory teams.

To be fair to junior he’s not doing a terrible job given he’s been gifted the seat.

Five points-earning finishes in eight races is admittedly not bad, but LeClerc also has five finishes in the points and he has 54 points to Stroll's 37. And compared to Alonso's 117 points across eight finishes...

Perez just shows how important it is to have the best car. Perez might be the worst driver currently on the grid (how in the hell do you get knocked out of Q1 every single time driving a rocketship), yet he is still ahead of Alonso and Lewis in the championship.

And Lance is fine, there are currently worse drivers on the grid, such as Perez and Alonso doesn't play nicely if he has a teammate that is actually good. There is going to be alot of trouble at Aston Martin if Lewis would replace Lance for example.

And he will tread lightly with Alonso I'm sure.

Aye - Alonso is a perfect "Brand Ambassador" for Aston Martin and I expect that might have been the main reason he was hired. That he also still happens to still be a darn good racing driver when properly motivated has certainly been a bonus. :)

IMO, Perez is not a bad driver, but I do agree with you that in a car so dominant he should routinely be on the podium (as opposed to being so just half the time). That being said, the extra 16 points from his two wins and two Fastest Laps are why he is second in the WDC, so...

Interesting piece. Never crossed my mind about a “What if” Albon stayed at RBR.

I like Alex, he seems a really nice guy. Only issue I have is he looks utterly stupid with that blonde hair 🤣. But he’s been driving well this year.

I think that we might get to see a new driver within the next few weeks, Perez is going to be fired, Horner has to, he is just sadly not producing the results...

And in this case the result they were looking for was.. staying within track limits. Pace seemed great. Incredibly disappointing.

Perez is still #2 in the WDC and has not been a real threat to Max so I don't see him being released - especially since he is under contract through the end of 2024. Sure, RBR can afford to buy him out, but I see no reason why they would.
