Your Apple USB-C cable should be much thicker than a normal lightning cable....

I bought one from eBay, it looked legit in every way but was a fake and only charged at 12w.

Got my 29w charger with USB type C to lightening cable today and did some tests.

In 30 mins it charged my iPhone 7 Plus and it charged 34% in 30 mins and now just done the same 30 min test with my iPad Pro 12.9

Guessing others got similar results?

17% in 30 min charge

Is it a 2015 or 2017 12.9?

any one try this all-in-one solution? it comes with USB-IF certified 5A charging cable, which is pretty cool.

This is interesting. Would need to be tested to see if it works with the 2017 iPad Pros. The Cable Matters won't do 2.4A out of 1 USB-A port if the others aren't being used. This one looks like it will, though.

it seems that 3 USB A ports share 2.4A output. but the PD port is pretty good especially with certified cable, that can charge the Macbook Pro 13" at full speed.

Rather impressed doing a full charge here

Plugged in my 2017 12.9 at 12.20 with 15% left and at 13:50 it’s at about 80% charged. So much better than the original charger

Just as a side note guys i have managed to charge and iphone 8 from 9% to 59% in half hour just using and anker 24w 2 USB and an anker powerline cable.

I had ordered the power line 5+ and a 2m usb c from apple, but those 2 are getting returned first thing as there unopened.

Hope this info helps some iphone users.

(This is for the 2017 12.9" iPad Pro)

Since there's been renewed interest in the charging speeds, I've spent some time to redo the tests using the Anker 30W charger mentioned in the original post, this time with time data points:

chart-smaller.png

The chart isn't the best - unfortunately I don't use Excel a lot so this took me some time. Most people will be interested in the blue line. It looks mostly linear, but you can tell from the power (orange) line that the iPad is down regulating the power over time.

@The Game 161 - my data points show 61% to 77% in 26 minutes, so roughly in line with your speeds, although it seems like the Anker charger might be slightly faster (maybe...)

I have also tested the phone 8 standard now using

1x 2m Apple USB C to lighting
1x Anker Powerline 5+

The results are awful 58% to 76% in 30 mins.

I know there is some debate as to whether the anker powerline 5+ supports apple fast charging. Its a USB C PD spec but the charge time was woeful. As stated in my older post the 24w dual usb and powerline usb to lighting holds my record of charging 50% in 30mins and the whole setup is available for under £20.

The data points are appreciated - well this thread is more for the iPad Pro than the iPhone 8. It's actually not clear if the iPhone 8 supports fast charging using USB-C PD - if you refer to the other Fast Charging thread - https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/fast-charging.2066638/page-8, it seems like only the iPhone 8+ actually manages this.

I wonder i have defective anker 30w ,because my 10.5 heats up real quick when charging and I think it ruined my battery.I will get the apple 29w and check if it also heats up the device.

I would recommend cross-referencing against @iF34R’s results - https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...d-party-adapters.2052414/page-6#post-24766395. You can see from my chart that the iPad Pro downregulates the energy sent to the battery to keep the battery safe. If it does “heat up”, it should be within engineering tolerances and not spoil your battery.

Are the speed results any different for those on the 10.5 pro to the 12.9?

Possibly, which is why I did the test again for the 12.9” iPad Pro. If you want comparable 10.5” results, @iF34R did a pretty good job in the link above. I haven’t had the time to tabulate against my current results though.

Ty for the link but after using anker i realized my battery life dropped to %95 with only 22 cycle checked with coconut battery and i babysit my battery ,never let it drop below %40 and never passed %80

I've repeated the same tests on the 10.5" and it's quite clear that the 10.5" charges more quickly (e.g. 6-60% in 55min on the 10.5" versus 71min on the 12.9"), despite the power regulating down more rapidly. I've combined both charts on the same page so it's easier to see the difference:

Either way it looks like the power is being well regulated by the iPad Pros (very aggressively down-regulated on the 10.5"), so there's little to no risk of too much power being delivered as the percentage goes higher.

Didnt you notice any heat on the devices when charging ?i am asking because i might get a faulty anker, the heat doesnt feel normal to me

It didn’t feel particularly warm for me.

quick question, first gen pro 12.9 supports the same fast charging (29W) ? thanks

It does, however a third party charger might not work. To be safe, you can stick with Apple’s 29W charger, but if you try a third party charger and it gets similar charging speeds to the charts I posted, it’s a good sign that it is working.

Heads up! You can get a RAVPower 26800mAh USB-C PD Power Bank + Free USB-C charger for $56 before taxes on Amazon - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LRQDAEI/ - not sure how long it'll last.

(Remember to add the promotion that adds the charger)

EDIT: Nevermind, read the fine print, the "free charger" doesn't support the USB-C to Lightning cable. Weird...

So is the consensus that there's still no 3rd party cable that will provide fast charging? For me fast charging would be a bit of a novelty but I would use it from time to time... not enough to pay the Apple tax on a 2M cable though.
