GM = gold master. Which is the build you get when downloading firmware from iTunes.
Cool. Thanks!

PS It's interesting how different cultures use different terms to mean the same thing. Here in the Seattle area, I hear RTM most often, followed by GA (generally available or something like that).

I call it "tape out."

Well RTM, GM and GA are all along the same lines, but don't mean the same things.

Whilst all are final builds, it's all about distribution.

RTM - Release to Manufacturing. Software is released to OEM for inclusing. E.g Windows 7 -> Dell. Windows 7 RTMd on the 22nd July.
GA - General Availability. Software is available to everyone, usually after RTM.

GM - Gold Master. Software build released to developers then {a few days later} to the general public.

I hope that I explained that well enough for you.

AT&T said late summer for MMS, Apple said nothing and has no say in it (if you're talking about the picture I attached below from Apple's website, that is there because that is what AT&T told them). All AT&T needs to do is release a carrier file update for MMS, the only thing Apple does is release it through iTunes. There is no official time that 3.1 needs to be released.

RUMORS are that the carrier file update needed for AT&T customers to enable MMS will be included with 3.1, but there is no evidence that points to that whatsoever.

Yeah no evidence... other then the fact that its already activated in 3.1 for AT&T users

Thanks. I am actually aware of the differences in details. I mentioned them as being the same in the sense that the final build has been made. :)

I also believe that RTM is often referred to as "go gold," as the milestone involves burning the "gold" master disc for the product.

We use the term "GA" in our own company mainly because our products are not distributed in boxed packages, thereby not having an RTM, but I appreciate your reminding me about GA coming after RTM when there is an RTM (like Windows 7 has been RTM'd and will be GA on October 22). :)

Besides, 3.1 is not available for the public yet, is it?

I was just responding to his "MMS is already activated in 3.1 for AT&T users" remark. 3.1 doesn't magically give you MMS... AT&T must enable it for your phone on their end first.

Understood. I just wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything.

I'm running 3.0.1 and have MMS working without any sort of hack. I'm in Spain and have Movistar, not AT&T. So you would be right about 3.1 not having anything to do with MMS. It's just AT&T that has to release a carrier update, that's all.

Not really because iam in the US running 3.0.1 and sense my updates i have not yet to see the camera icon to send pics yet, with no hacks,>>>>> So my guess is the only way some people r going to send pics r with the new update because At&T is not going to b able to put the camera icon at the botton lefthand corner they r just changing the carrier file. Now apple will with the release of 3.1, iam sure the people with no camera icon will see one after 3.1 is released

And? The little camera icon was in the 3.0 betas too. Then it was taken out for the GM.
The carrier file in the 3.1 betas is AT&T 4.5. AT&T can easily tell Apple to release the carrier file whenever they please, and Apple will oblige, whether 3.1 is out or not. Or, they can tell them to include it in 3.1. As far as I'm concerned, it's enabled right now so developers who may be making apps that may make use of the MMS feature don't hit a wall when they're testing. It does NOT mean it will be released with 3.1, or that they won't change it to carrier file v4.6 and have the MMS icon taken out.

I'm perplexed why this is so controversial. The 3.1 issue is orthogonal to the MMS AT&T issue.

1) in almost every other country/carrier, 3.0 provides MMS.
2) 3.0 provided MMS to developers who jumped through hoops with AT&T to get it turned on.
3) Apple has said the hold up with MMS is AT&T, which needs to do some computer magic on its end.
4) the difference between MMS working and not is the carrier file, not the OS version.

Apple will release 3.1 on its own schedule, and won't wait for AT&T. Hopefully AT&T gets its act together and flips on MMS by then (at which point we will need a new carrier file).

Huh? Changing the carrier file will reveal the camera icon, no software update needed.

+1. Some people are hung up on OS 3.1 being the source of us getting MMS. It has nothing to do with it, but you just can't convince some people. We'd have it now, if AT&T was ready for it. Anyway, let's not get this thread going on a tangent about MMS.

I actually feel a little guilty (ok, maybe not, but I do take responsibility) for starting the MMS argument in this thread. But, in my defense, my reply was to someone who implied the date for 3.1 would be when AT&T opened up MMS for customers:

Since AT&T and Apple said 'late summer,' I would expect a Beta 4 this week and no GM until AT&T is ready.

That might turn out to be the case if AT&T updates Apple with its MMS support schedule. That way the user would not have to run two updates (one for OS 3.1 and the other for the updated carrier file) back to back. :)

I know what you're saying. A lot of people think that is fact, but there's no basis for it. It would be nice for AT&T's reputation if that were the case, but I don't think it'll happen. If it does, it will just be coincidence, since I don't think AT&T's network is ready yet.

I was the one who posted it, and you are still mistaken.

Apple has the proper carrier files in 3.1 Beta's. Which is why we have the camera icon. However, AT&T still hasn't activated MMS. Apple will release 3.1 to the masses once AT&T is ready, so they don't have to re-update everyone so soon after downloading 3.1. Know what I'm saying?

You are mistaken. 3.0 betas had the camera icon too, and it was removed from the GM. The public release of 3.1 can have carrier file 4.6 with no MMS support.

I am aware of that, but I am convinced Apple is waiting for AT&T to get everything in order before releasing 3.1. Why would they release 3.0.1 instead of a version that's already been tested for a month?

Because they're not done adding new features and debugging 3.1. They aren't going to set their worldwide roadmap based on AT&T's shenanigans at this point.

We can argue this all day, I'm convinced Apple is going to wait for AT&T to release 3.1 to avoid 2 updates so close to one another, but we won't know anything until 3.1 is released so its pointless.

What do you guys think? I can't imagine they'd test 3.1 LONGER than 3.0 since it's not filled with new features.

Discuss.

Should be beta 4 tomorrow. Would be nice, as I'm still experiencing an annoying calendar issue where subscribed ical calendars are being pushed to iphone through me.com (but not visible on webapp).
Tech support acknowledges it has something to do with the beta and they can't support it at this time.
