We can argue this all day, I'm convinced Apple is going to wait for AT&T to release 3.1 to avoid 2 updates so close to one another, but we won't know anything until 3.1 is released so its pointless.

We may never know. If MMS is turned on by AT&T coincident to 3.1 release, we won't know whether AT&T waited for Apple, or Apple waited for AT&T.

i love how this became a discussion about MMS.

Get over it already, it'll be out when it's out. It probably has nothing to do with 3.1. Actually, I'm positive.

And? The little camera icon was in the 3.0 betas too. Then it was taken out for the GM.
The carrier file in the 3.1 betas is AT&T 4.5. AT&T can easily tell Apple to release the carrier file whenever they please, and Apple will oblige, whether 3.1 is out or not. Or, they can tell them to include it in 3.1. As far as I'm concerned, it's enabled right now so developers who may be making apps that may make use of the MMS feature don't hit a wall when they're testing. It does NOT mean it will be released with 3.1, or that they won't change it to carrier file v4.6 and have the MMS icon taken out.

4.5 is perfectly capable of sending MMS messages. I've done it without any hacks.

Yes, it is capable, if the MMS opt-out is removed from your account. For most iPhone customers, it is still on their account. There will most likely not be a mass-removal of the opt-out until a day or two before the updated carrier file is available.

I'm guessing you're a developer since you have the 4.5 carrier file?

Also, where specifically did I state that 4.5 was not MMS capable? It is capable of sending the MMS, but MMS is blocked at AT&T's level, as I said, with the iPhone MMS opt-out.

I am aware of that, but I am convinced Apple is waiting for AT&T to get everything in order before releasing 3.1. Why would they release 3.0.1 instead of a version that's already been tested for a month?

One month is nothing when it comes to QA, especially on a mass-market operating system like iPhone OS.

Everything you said is correct. It's not the firmware that has to be updated to send MMS... it's AT&T that needs to remove the block from our iPhones.

Beta 4 please. I hope it's not GM yet. It seems like they still have some work to do. I won't upgrade to 3.x again until it's as smooth as 2.2.1. Copy and paste doesn't mean that much to me.

I don't know how you get along without it Spaz, I use that feature like 15 times a day

I've never been on the phone with ATT to remove anything and MMS still worked. Dunno what they were doing, but it let me send for a couple of hours.

Never said you said 4.5 wasn't capable, just clarifying that it is because of your reference to a "4.6" carrier file, which isn't needed based on current beta development software. More or less taking a variable out of the "why don't we have MMS" snowball.

Can you explain what you use it for? I guess I just use my iPhone differently than you.

referral codes, tidbits of websites, copying things into notes, copying things into contacts etc...

there are other reasons I use it and I don't do all of those everyday, but it just seems like I use the feature quite often. I guess if you don't miss what you've never had and it doesn't sound like you've used 3.0 much at all so I can see how it doesn't bother you.

Also, did you end up jail-breaking your phone to use that sweet GUI make-up? Does jailbreaking really not screw up the phone at all? I don't think I'd ever do it because I like my iPhone as pure as can be, but it sure is tempting after seeing beatiful layouts like classica

I did jailbreak and I installed absolutely NOTHING. This method will allow my jailbroken iPhone to perform at un-jailbroken speeds while giving me the added ability to change graphics and sounds manually. Don't install WinterBoard... whatever you do. WinterBoard is the main cause for having a nice and slow iPhone (probably not the case with the 3GS though)

You completely missed my point of mentioning a 4.6 carrier file, go read it again. Please take extra time on the bolded and underlined portions below.
I essentially stated that, if AT&T is not ready for MMS by the time 3.1 is released, they can disable the camera icon with another carrier file, 4.6.

Also, you never answered my question. Are you a developer? Cus that's the only way for you to legitimately get the 4.5 file right now.

Just stating there is no point in even mentioning any other carrier file, as it's not needed with current beta. Opt out BS, or not, and without hacks. So it's pointless to mention another carrier update.

Developer? Yes. Have been since the start of the program.

There is a point. The point is, if AT&T is not ready, then Apple will not be releasing carrier file 4.5 with the 3.1 update.
Or, by the time 3.1 GM is released, AT&T may have released MMS for the iPhone and already put out carrier file 4.5 or higher, making the 4.5 in 3.1 beta irrelevant.

I referred in my statement to the beta 4.5 carrier file.

4.6 reference is pointless.

The only thing that is pointless is arguing with you about this.
It does not matter what random number I am using to reference a file newer than 4.5.
The point is, AT&T can change the carrier file between now and the time 3.1 is released, once again disabling the camera icon. It does not matter that it is there right now, what matters is what file is there when 3.1 GM is released.

If AT&T is not ready, then they WILL change the carrier file from 4.5, that is the point. Just because 4.5 is in there now does not mean it will be released with it.

Awww. Sorry to put you in such a tussie.:)
