I really need advice as to what to order.

I am returning this monitor today.

The text is so small it's unbearable.

Should I just get six Apple Cinema Displays? They are so old now though :(

Is this one any good?!

109PPI seems too low : (

I am stuck.

What's peoples dream monitors?

Still a dream because the ones many want aren't being made yet fella. Not good enough panels yet for a manufacturer to build one around it yet and OSX still needs better 4k support. NEC do make some great top end displays with the right LCD though, colours top notch.

If you're ever in London and you get bored of the can consider me for a charitable donation! :D

The 60 inch Samsung 4k tv I saw ice skating at canary wharf last month looked pretty good, god knows if will work properly with the can though!

Spend 18k and get the Sony monitor. It's true 4k. You seem to have the resources for it so what not get the best?

4K displays are so stupid. I already have an 17,000 LG 84Inch 4K Display and I never even use it.

I like the sound of the PA302W - please advise instead of hating, all of you!

Was just about to order then this: "To get the full advantage of all 1.07 billion colors (Windows only – Mac doesn’t support it), you’ll need to run a DisplayPort cable from the card to the DisplayPort on the PC. None of the other ports will give you this full color mode AND you’ll have to enable this functionality on the driver. The full color support is built into the driver model for Windows, but for some reason Apple hasn’t bothered to add support yet (yes, even in Mavericks)."

The 4k market is more immature than little princess on the tv my daughter watches! Patience is required, get a 27 inch Thunderbolt and sit tight!

They sell a frenzel lens you can attach to those monitors that will make the text etc bigger.

If you have the money, get yourself a throne, I know I would. :D

A.K.A "I read it but chose to ignore it because I thought it would work differently for me."

Seriously, why are you complaining about something that you knew would happen?

Dude, he has a fully-loaded Mac Pro. That's all we need to know, this guy is clearly a badass and doesn't need any advice from people with lesser machines. After all, worth and knowledge are directly related to our possessions. Fully-loaded Mac Pro = Pure Genius on an Einstein level.

You jerk, you are making me laugh so hard I'm having chest pains...

What is the difference between 1/2 native hIDPI and 'real' Retina scaling?
[ don't really think there is one. Other than more highly customized icons for that specific DPI it is largely the same infrastructure. ]

It would be easier if you go to the store and play with rMBP display preferences. The text in hiDPI is simply too huge. Retina scaling on rMBP has about 6 different scaling options, so you can choose the one matching your personal preference.

3600$ for that screen eh.
Return it and get yourself one of those new Dell ones. Thats an outrageous price. The 28" from Dell is supposed to be what, 699$ or something. Im not sure its justified to charge 2900 more for 4" for screen...

didnt see there were 3 pages to this thread allready. My bad

Like where wasn't multiple resolution options before "Retina" arrived??? The same mechanism with 1 or 3 settings is still largely the same mechanism. The "Retina" being the setting may not be likely for the new monitor either if they don't pick in the limted options available the exact ratio you happen to likely that really has nothing at all to do with "Retina" factors.

There is a lot of difference in quality between Dell's TN panel and the IPS IGZO panel Sharp are using. For some that won't matter, for others it is vital and the difference in cost is not important.

Of course for the threadstarter this is all about getting attention because he is an insecure, vile, person who flaunts wealth to feel better about himself and nothing to do with using these things in a professional setting so the more money they cost the better.

Easy, you'll go to time-out :D

I too bought a 17k 84" 4K LG TV and I don't even watch it because for 17k I expect the manufacturer to have more than 2 letters in their name. The TV is out in my 10 car garage in between the unused Aston Martin and Ferrari that I bought one day out of spare change.

I would like to brag some more but the secretary I hired to type my postings expects to have lunch now.

Just because I posted the above doesn't make it true :)

Haha this thread is hilarious. The TS could be a real person but I can see the amusement if it was just some random guy posting for shts and giggles.

The thread starter is either Kenneth Tong or reposting pictures from somewhere and pretending to be him. Kenneth Tong is the sort of person who would come here and do all this, but then he also makes a good person to imitate in order to troll people. Google him and you'll see why I called him vile.

Troll alert....

Come on.... You expect me to believe you shelled out for the Sharp 4K monitor with the new Mac Pro and didn't do any research first, and now you're upset that the fonts look small on it, etc. And NOW you're asking MacRumors for advice on alternatives to it?

IMO, it's pretty clear that 4K displays are the new, over-hyped thing to drive display sales, and just like 3D HDTV, it's only going to matter to a niche segment of the market unless prices drop so far, it becomes pretty much standard-issue.

From all the reviews of the new 4K display offerings I've seen so far, you're looking at the classic immature marketplace. You've got far more vendors promising new models than actually selling them, and left and right they're trying to sell you less than 4K pixel resolution but call it 4K anyway by "rounding up". Half the stuff has synchronization problems with the new Mac Pro too, right now. As usual, Dell is out there trying to offer a product before most of the others are ready and at competitive prices, but it's going to be in a typical, ugly looking enclosure and you'll regret buying the first model instead of waiting until later in the year when it's replaced with better versions at half the price.

I'm interested in a new Mac Pro myself, but not going to bother spending much on displays. IMO, you'll do great with a pair of 27" IPS panel displays from Samsung, Dell, HP, or any other similar vendor, coupled with a good monitor stand designed to VESA mount both of them. Don't bother with any of Apple's Cinema Displays unless you get some steal of a deal on a used or refurbished one. They're way overpriced just to have the matching Apple logo on them.

Yes I see what you mean. Vile doesn't describe him. A sick wannabe I think.
