I think you may have possibly put yourself through some of unnecessary work.

The cable with the odd connector plugs directly into the BT wire. No cutting required. Just remove it from the old BT module, and plug it into the wire connector on the new cable. Then end that plugs into the logicboard stays in place.

Since you purchased you kit a long while back, perhaps it’s different than my kit, but it sounds like it’s the same.

Yeah, initially I did try mating the kit's connector into the 5,1's short BT cable and no fit. The kit was originally sold as for the 1,1 2,1 3,1 (separate kit was also available for 4,1 5,1) but the cable was not needed in the 3,1. Maybe it was useful in the 1,1 or 2,1?

When planning out the migration, I did go back and look at the current OSXWifi products and the cable I have (or had until I hacked it) is not the same as anything shown. The Broadcom end is the same, but the motherboard-BT end had an un-mateable 2-pin connector rather than the 4-pin types shown. In fact I was hoping to buy just the cable but OSXWifi doesn't sell it separately. I tried hunting for something identical but, alas, my search-fu skills weren't up to it!

Then the MacGyver instinct kicked in and, well...:D

In fact I was hoping to buy just the cable but OSXWifi doesn't sell it separately.

That is a shame. It makes for a very clean/reversible upgrade. I could have sworn they sold that cable just by itself, but I guess not.

Anyway you've got it all working now, and that's all that matters in the long run.

Good Job!

BTW...
I had to contact them before and they're very helpful. You could contact them, let them know you are a customer who purchased a kit in the past, and now need this cable. There's a decent chance they would sell you one since you've already purchased a kit. It's worth a try just to have the cable on hand.

Ya know... that's a reasonable idea. Thanks for suggesting it!

Ok, I'm at a loss...

I installed the OSXWifi kit and it seems to generally be properly functional. Wifi is good and fast on my AC router. Bluetooth shows up properly (although I needed to adjust the power once to get it right). Everything seems to show continuity is enabled.

However, I cannot get any continuity features to work and I cannot pair with my apple watch. I can only do airdrop as a new feature. I tried to do the Cmd-S-R SIP deactivation but that never worked right, so I took out my GPU, put in the 120, rebooted under Cmd-R. In terminal, disabled SIP and rebooted. I confirmed then that SIM was disabled with "csrutil status."

I copied the command line many have posted here into terminal when SIP was off. After accepting my password, it seemed to do nothing. Is that right?

I also while SIP was off ran the latest Beta (which I guess is still listed as being for Sierra?) for CAT. Again, that reported continuity was enabled. It then did ask to install something under Privacy tab of the Security & Privacy pane in System Utilities.

I restarted back into recovery and enabled SIP. Restarted and zip... No continuity either direction. And still no ability with my watch.

What am I doing wrong here? What else should I look into? Thanks!!!

I have a cMP 4,1 upgraded to 5,1 and running Mojave. Having purchased and installed a new WiFi/BT card (from iMac I believe) and adapter and also an external BT antenna because the BT signal was so weak the Magic Mouse was unusable merely 3 ft. from the Mac, it was all working as desired - except no Watch Unlock.

The option was shown in System Prefs but trying to turn it on always just timed out saying it couldn't find the Watch. Nonsense of course as the Mac, Watch and iPhone were all within 3 ft. of each other. The problem was that this Mac Pro is specifically NOT enabled to allow this. Thanks Apple.

I started looking into CAT etc and saw the commands listed in this thread that can be used instead, but that was confusing as in one case a single command is suggested as all that is required, but then elsewhere there are 3 commands listed. The same first one but also then 2 further ones and I could see no reason why all 3 were not required. This is always annoying in forums, with conflicted advice and in some cases responses to both claiming they worked, but I think that all 3 commands are required. The first to enable continuity/handoff (whatever you want to call it), the second to add your Mac's ID to allow it to use that facility and then to flush the caches. Maybe that last is not required if followed by a restart as I did. Maybe flushing the caches and simply logging out and back in might work, but in my case, I did flush them and still no Watch Unlock until I restarted which I had to do for another reason.

So what I can say is that running the first 2 commands, then flush the caches and restart definitely brought continuity/handoff alive and Watch Unlock now works. Maybe you only need to flush the caches if you just want to log out and back in, whereas perhaps not needed if followed by a full restart. Others may be able to confirm either way.

One more thing about SIP. I have it custom enabled to allow the use of some special kexts. I enabled SIP WITHOUT kext or fs to allow what I need. I was hence allowed to run the continuity/handoff commands directly and did NOT need to fully disable and later re-enable SIP afterwards. I understand the security that SIP is intended to provide, but I think it is simply horrendously intrusive. Not allowing ME to control my own machine, as I see fit is quite frankly unacceptable. I hate it. Given no alternative, I'd disable it and live dangerously so I can configure my Mac how I like. But that's me, I also ride motorcycles and we all know how dangerous they are supposed to be. Ha. My life, my choice.

If however you want the security blanket of SIP, you'll have a lot more faff when needing to hack around Apple's attempts to prevent us from continuing to use our still perfectly capable older Macs - as in this case.

The bottom line is that with the right hardware and configuration tweeks, an older cMP can be made to run Mojave with all the latest features. If yours doesn't, something hasn't been done right. So don't give up.

Restart Mac Pro

Hold down Command-R to reboot into Recovery Mode.

Click Utilities.

Select Terminal.

Type csrutil disable.

Press Return or Enter on your keyboard.

Restart Mac Pro

Open Terminal and run this:

sudo /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c "Set:Mac-F221BEC8:ContinuitySupport true" "/System/Library/Frameworks/IOBluetooth.framework/Versions/A/Resources/SystemParameters.plist"

sudo -E perl -pi -e "s/\Mac-00BE6ED71E35EB86/\Mac-F221BEC8\0\0\0\0\0\0\0\0/" /System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AirPortBrcm4360.kext/Contents/MacOS/AirPortBrcm4360

Now you only need to delete the kext cache:

Enter this in Terminal:

cd /System/Library/Extensions/

sudo touch .

Restart Mac Pro

Hold down Command-R to reboot into Recovery Mode.

Click Utilities.

Select Terminal.

Type csrutil enable

Press Return or Enter on your keyboard.

Restart Mac Pro

Restart Mac Pro

That covers it, but a couple of questions:-

Why does the kext cache need to be cleared? Does a restart not do that? I'm unclear as to when the cache is actually built.

The second of the main commands replaces the 00BE6ED71E35EB86 Mac ID with that of the cMP (well F221BEC8 was mine at least). So what is the one that is being 'removed'? Presumably an unimportant one, but what actual model is it?

Thanks for the detailed instructions. I followed them exactly. I was a little unclear whether "sudo touch ." included the period so tired both ways. it was clear that sudo touch with no period was expecting further commands.

In any event, no luck. Still unable to use continuity either direction. Still unable to enable Watch unlock.

I have also tried to log out of iCloud on my mac but cannot complete the sign out. Signing out seemingly takes forever and hangs. Ultimately I have to kill the process via Activity Monitor. I suppose that's a separate issue...

Any guidance as to what diagnostics I can/should run to see whether I have the right kexts, etc? I'm pretty clueless at that level, so need a bit of handholding.

Thanks!
[doublepost=1546800871][/doublepost]By the way, when I run CAT diagnostics, this error comes up:

Verifying Wi-Fi hardware... WARNING. An unknown/untested AirPort card using the 'BrcmNIC' kext is active. This tool can't fix this.

I'm using a OSXWifi card...

Contact OSXWIFI if you got the kit from them. They provided me with the information I posted. They are very helpful and quick to respond.

I got the puzzling return also when running SUDO TOUCH, and I too ran it both with/without the period. I can’t answer your questions, but it did result in mine working perfectly including Apple Watch Unlock.

Ok, back to basics. Run System Information (Opt+About this Mac). You should have:-

Bluetooth:
Bluetooth Low Energy Supported: Yes
Handoff Supported: Yes

and WiFi
Auto Unlock: Supported

Maybe others, but those are significant and required for any of this to work.

However I did read elsewhere of someone in a similar position. It wouldn't work, but Sys. Info. did show the above. Turned out the BT/WiFi card was actually faulty. Supplier sent another one and it then all worked. So you cannot discount the possibility of faulty hardware.

You HAVE to use the period at the end. The command updates the access times of the file/folder specified and the period signifies the current folder (hence the previous cd command to set the current folder). If you leave off the period, there is no target specified for the command, so it'll do nothing (and probably complain).

Sometimes the apparently simplest things are actually of crucial importance. That's unix. But it is wonderfully precise.

That one wasn’t an OSXWIFI kit, and had other issues. It caused kernel panics and the BT didn’t show up for the party most of the time. It wasn’t even detected by the system profiler during those times too.

Rebuilding the kext cache is paramount. Without it, it won’t read the updated kexts and will continue not working. Also, it wasn’t instant for me. It took some time for mine to start working properly. I’m talking something on the order of 20-30 minutes. I have no clue why it works this way, but the sudo touch . is key here.

Well, I did contact OSXWifi, and got the same instructions as above. But more importantly, I solved my issue of how to log out of iCloud, thanks to AppleCare who didn't seem to be too concerned about the fact that my machine was 7 years out of warranty. Maybe we all get ongoing service if we are paying for iCloud storage or something?

Anyway, having finally been able to log out of iCloud, I did a three chime PRAM reset, started back up and -- miraculously -- all seems to work! I have continuity working both directions, Apple Watch unlocking, etc!

Phew, that was a pain. Hopefully it continues to work fine. I think my iCloud account was just a mess on my computer.

Moral for me is: if you have OSXWifi, the steps above are correct (in CRJackson2134's message). And iCloud log out, PRAM reset and iCloud log in worked.

Fingers crossed for others (and for me that it continues to work)!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

News&Updates:

(I will continue updating and gathering some new information and plans. Just keep focusing!)

A. We just found another simpler, more convenient plan!

The plan is actually similar to mine. Using Apple's card to build a new card and plug it into the computer. Because the card is Apple-Genuine, the Continuity and Handoff features is enabled without any additional drivers.
However, I had confirmed from the seller that this USB dongle contain only BT but without Wi-Fi!

Here is the link: http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a230r.1.0.0.dTfITn&id=21898631216
(This seller could barely speak English (could read but hard talk). However, he do not accept Paypal. But the good news is that he could ship to US directly! Contact him if you guys want! His E-Mail address is wdxxfu@126.com)

This plan was discovered and shared by jdavidbarrera.

06/25/2014
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

B. If your computer is so old that contain no mPCIe slot. Try this plan:

This plan is nothing different from my plan but a PCIe card. So you could plug the card into you PCIe slot rather than mPCIe. Moreover, the PCIe slot has already contained the USB bus. So all you have to do is to plug in the card and use! However, the antenna could be external. But you could also prolong your internal antenna wire too (haha).

Here is the link: http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm...d4913621.aQQx6V&id=27356596474&_u=qb7bf0jb96e
(The seller is the same guy who sell the iMac Card and convert card. He speaks English, accepts Paypal and Ships directly to US. You guys could buy the card very easily! His E-Mail address is 133557@qq.com)

This plan was inspired by 128keaton.

06/26/2014
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

C. If you are seeking a more convenient plan about this upgrade, kennyman and cparr007 provided their plans in #122 and #123 floors which are more convenient than mine. They used some new kinds of conversion cards and approaches. However, The reason why I choose to make my plan like this (hide wires behind the backplane board which makes the plan more complex) is to protect wire because it could be dangerous if you leave those wires in free spaces. Anyway, thanks for sharing!

Those plans were provided by kennyman and cparr007 in #122 and #123 floors.

Article:

Hello everyone! It is my first time to post on the MacRumors. It's been excited. I am a Chinese high school student, preparing to study in US next month. So please forgive my language using and mistakes. I took about 7 hours to write this article in order to help everybody upgrade their old Macs and use the latest features. So Please read the article carefully and patiently (some details are very important!). Thank you very much!

I also posted this article to Netkas: http://forum.netkas.org/index.php/topic,8497.0.html. Check it out if you want!

After the release of OS X 10.10, I found that my old Mac Pro Mid 2010 could not use the new features such as Continuity, Handoff and new AirDrop. As you know, the Continuity, Handoff and AirDrop is not available on the old Macs because the Airport and Bluetooth modules are out of date, using 802.11n and BT 2.1+EDR or even older. After reading articles and posts on the Internet, I found some solutions. The best plan is to replace the Airport Card and BT Card with the latest iMac Airport Card.

attachment.php

However, there are some problems with that plan:

First, the interface of the iMac Airport Card is not mPCIe but the special, unknown one. So it could not be directly used for the Mac Pro upgrade.

Second, some guys on Netkas have actually tried this plan. But the result look unsuccessful and strange. Some of them (http://forum.netkas.org/index.php/topic,8385.0.html) have even tried to convert the interface into mPCIe by soldering manually just because the convert card they bought on TaoBao is not working for BT part of the iMac Card.

Now, I had developed a feasible plan to let both the ac and BT 4.0 part of the iMac Card work on the Mac Pro 2010 simultaneously! Of course, with Continuity and handoff enabled!

Ok, here are the procedures you need to follow to finish the upgrade:

1. Preparing the materials and the plan.

A. Convert Card:

Go to TaoBao and buy this convert card in this link: http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a1z09.2.9.10.91QEa2&id=20953715880 (The seller of the cards didn't put out both the pictures of iMac Card and convert card but only the pictures of iMac Card because other sellers keep plagiarizing the pictures in order to captivate buyers. The link DO contain both the iMac Card and convert card! The seller speaks English, accepts Paypal and could ship to US directly. So it is pretty easy for you guys to buy the parts. Here is his E-Mail address so you guys could contact the seller directly: 133557@qq.com. Thank jdavidbarrera for his suggestions!) The guy in Netkas said that he tried this card and discovered that the BT was not working by using this card. After having talks with the seller of the convert card, I find the problem: The original mPCIe slot of the Mac Pro Mid 2010 does not contain the USB bus!! So that is the reason why the BT part of the iMac Card is not working while being plugged into Mac Pro. I will show my solution later.

B. IPX antenna wire at the length of about half a meter:

You could search and buy it on ebay or TaoBao. The purpose of buying the wire is that the original BT antenna (see the pictures, the BT antenna of Mac Pro is independent, not merged with that of Wi-Fi, located at the back of the machine [see the pictures]) wire of Mac Pro is so short that could not reach the position of the mPCIe slot (the new iMac Card is a Wi-Fi and BT combo Airport Card). So we need an extra wire to prolong the origin one to the position of mPCIe slot.

attachment.php

C. A thin wire (around 1 mm thickness) at the length of about 1 meter:

The purpose of this wire is to connect the convert card and the iMac Card to the original BT USB slot of Mac Pro. In other words, a USB cable. I will show my solution later.

2. Implement the plan (Part I).

Take out your tools and IPX antenna Wire. We are going to disassemble the machine and prolong the BT antenna wire.

A. First, you need to get the vertical backplane board (not only the CPU tray) out of your machine because the BT antenna wire is behind that board. You need to be very careful moving out the board and find the BT antenna wire which is located at the lower right corner of the machine, labeled "BT". And then, disconnect the original Airport Card and BT Card from the backplane board.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ATTENTION: keep the USB connector of the BT Card (see the pictures)! We will use this part later.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

B. Second, cut both the Head of the BT antenna wire in machine and the end of the IPX antenna wire you bought. And then connect them together (see the pictures). Soldering is not recommended because the wire is very thin and tiny. Using a electrical sticky tape to seal the wire could be a better approach. Checking shorts is the most important thing you need to do. After that, fix the wire on the rear panel of the machine. Finally, put ONLY the backplane board back to the machine.

attachment.php

Now, your prolonged BT antenna wire is supposed to be ready!

3. Implement the plan (Part II).

Take out the iMac Card (which is preinstalled on the convert card) bought on the TaoBao, the 1 meter thin wire and the origin BT card connector (see the picture).

A. First, cut that 1 meter long, 1 mm thin wire equally into two 50 cm wires, which are going to be used as Data+ & Date- USB wires.

B. Solder one side of ends of the two wires onto the USB port of the convert card (see the pictures). and then put the other side of ends of the wires into the connector (see the pictures). Be careful about the orders of the wires' ends B] I have marked the orders on the pictures[/B].

attachment.php

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

REMEMBER: A to A, B to B! If you mistaken the order of the wires' ends, the BT part of the Card will not be functional!! IN ADDITION, You MUST carefully check for the shorts especially the parts you soldered!!

PS: we will only use two gold keys (A and B) of the connector. So I strongly recommend you guys to take out the other two gold keys by using screw drivers or knives in order to prevent shorting out.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

attachment.php

attachment.php

attachment.php

attachment.php

C. Use electrical sticky tapes to cover the soldering point on the convert card in order to prevent shorting out (see the pictures). And then plug in the convert card (iMac Card is on the convert card) onto the mPCIe slot of the backplane board.

D. Hide the USB wire (that thin wire) into the back of the backplane board in order to protect it (It is important!). And then, plug the connector in the original BT USB port (just see the pictures if you are confused). Finally, check the wire orders again for just in case.

attachment.php

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PS: I put the original BT card back to the backplane board (which is useless now) JUST for decoration, with no wire connected. If you don't want to do this, just throw the old card away, haha! (But please keep the old Airport Card. You might need it later.)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

E. Let's connect the antennas. I have marked the orders of the antennas on the pictures. There are number labels on the original antennas. Maybe you guys will ask: "Why are there 3 wires plus a BT wire? I only see 2 wires on the Airport card." The wire labeled "2" is unused so it has been hidden by Apple behind the Airport card. You will see the wire after removing Airport card from the backplane board. The orders could be "3, 1, BT, 2" from the top to the bottom. (Old rules, if you are confused, just see the pictures)

attachment.php

F. Reassemble the machine and boot it (The computer won't boot if you didn't reassemble the machine completely). And then check the status of the iMac Card.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ATTENTION:

If the machine do not EVEN recognize the Wi-Fi part, here is the solution: turn off the computer; unplug the new iMac Card (be careful about that thin, USB wire); replug the old Airport card (BT card and antennas are not necessary to replug); reboot the machine; you are supposed to see the Wi-Fi logo on the status bar after rebooting; if so, turn off the computer again; unplug the old Airport card and set it aside; replug the new card; check for the shorts; reboot the computer; the card is supposed to be functional now!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If the machine do not recognize the BT part, just check if you mistaken the order of that thin, USB wire. If so, revert them and try again!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

G. If everything goes fine, congratulations! You just did it!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PS: All the paired BT devices on your Mac is invalid after replacing the card because the MAC address has changed. You have to repair all the devices. (Piece of cake, right?)

And now Apple Watch unlocking has gone wonky...

The Apple Watch unlocking never worked again after I posted that message above a week ago. I have restarted a number of times, etc. Nothing has gotten it to work again. Continuity continues to still work, as does AirDrop (albeit slowly).

It is clear that the computer is trying to make the Apple Watch unlocking work, but it just can't quite get there. So it's a bit of the worse of all worlds as the password entry box takes and extra 10 or 15 seconds to appear after it just gives up on the watch.

Anyone else experience this? Any recommendations about how to kick it back into proper functioning? I did email OSXWifi specifically about this issue, but have not gotten any reply...
[doublepost=1547319730][/doublepost]Further to this, I downloaded Bluetooth Explorer and it shows that nothing is connected. I toggled off the check box in System Utilities for unlocking with the watch, and could not toggle it back on. I get the popup that the watch could not be found.

Restart Mac Pro

Hold down Command-R to reboot into Recovery Mode.

Click Utilities.

Select Terminal.

Type csrutil disable.

Press Return or Enter on your keyboard.

Restart Mac Pro

Open Terminal and run this:

sudo /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c "Set:Mac-F221BEC8:ContinuitySupport true" "/System/Library/Frameworks/IOBluetooth.framework/Versions/A/Resources/SystemParameters.plist"

sudo -E perl -pi -e "s/\Mac-00BE6ED71E35EB86/\Mac-F221BEC8\0\0\0\0\0\0\0\0/" /System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AirPortBrcm4360.kext/Contents/MacOS/AirPortBrcm4360

Now you only need to delete the kext cache:

Enter this in Terminal:

cd /System/Library/Extensions/

sudo touch .

Restart Mac Pro

Hold down Command-R to reboot into Recovery Mode.

Click Utilities.

Select Terminal.

Type csrutil enable

Press Return or Enter on your keyboard.

Restart Mac Pro
Nice post crj.
Folks, this is what you need to be doing if you have a 5,1.
Follow this guide and you’ll have Apple Watch unlock and the rest.

Yes, I did that routine in crjackson’s post to get it to work in the first place, so thank you for that. The vendor emailed the same, including first to do a clean install, which wouldn’t be worth the effort.

The update is I shut off my watch, restarted the computer and was able to get it going again. Seems to be working for the moment, so I will be crossing my fingers. I do like the satisfying tap on the wrist when it works!

Forget CAT folks. If you own a Mac Pro 5,1 just disable SIP and run these two commands. Then reboot, reenable SIP and you're done. This works great on a clean install of Mojave 10.14.1 and under.

sudo /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c "Set:Mac-F221BEC8:ContinuitySupport true" "/System/Library/Frameworks/IOBluetooth.framework/Versions/A/Resources/SystemParameters.plist"

sudo -E perl -pi -e "s/\Mac-00BE6ED71E35EB86/\Mac-F221BEC8\0\0\0\0\0\0\0\0/" /System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AirPortBrcm4360.kext/Contents/MacOS/AirPortBrcm4360

Now you only need to delete the kext cache:
Enter this in Terminal:
cd /System/Library/Extensions/
sudo touch .

reboot your Mac and enter recovery mode once again and type:

csrutil enable
reboot

NOTE:
Your card must be one of the cards contained in the AirPortBrcm4360.kext.

For others info.

If the card use AirPortBrcmNIC.kext. Then the 2nd command will become

Code:
sudo -E perl -pi -e "s/\Mac-00BE6ED71E35EB86/\Mac-F221BEC8\0\0\0\0\0\0\0\0/" /System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AirPortBrcmNIC.kext/Contents/MacOS/AirPortBrcmNIC

Having done all the appropriate commands etc, I had Watch Unlock working perfectly for several days (maybe even a few weeks), but now it is not. The login screen seems to delay showing the password entry field, as if it's trying to use the Watch but then when that fails, the entry field is displayed.

The Watch continues to unlock my MacBook Pro.

So something has changed on my Mac Pro. I haven't restarted it, but I did switch users and then back. Could that have affected it? Or might there have been some update in the background that has wiped out the special config settings that allow this to work?

I'll have to do some troubleshooting, but it is disappointing that these Mac Pro mods that we do to keep it up-to-date continue to give trouble.

Switch user can cause issue. In fact, most Handoff function may become single direction after users switching.
